Re: [hlds] Valve Security Breach

2011-11-08 Thread dmex
I would defiantly assume both users and some Valve staff use the same
passwords for multiple sites, I have no doubt some Valve staff have probably
had accounts at other sites compromised and maybe even their internal
network.

I think the main issue really should be that Valve has not notified users
they need to change their passwords for both Steam and other sites by now.
Disclosing a security breach of any customer data is mandatory by law in
Australia, US, other countries and (even though some are stupid enough to
use the same password for every site) Valve can be held liable by law for
not notifying users the second they become aware of the breach.

Fun facts and a hard to answer question persist:

If the passwords on the forum DB where not well encrypted then hackers would
have both the users email address and their email password.

Hackers can send a username reminder from Steam and then a password reset.

Now if the hackers have both your Steam username and are able to reset your
password then is Steam Guard just useless account protection?

Why has Valve possibly broken the law and not posted a minor update to
inform users their passwords and other data may have been compromised?

Re: [hlds] Valve Security Breach

2011-11-08 Thread Mattie Casper
I won't discuss further here, because it's not HLDS related. But see this
thread about reaper0628's account that got hacked:
http://sourceop.com/modules.php?name=Forumsfile=viewtopict=90261

Here is the before and after of the fellow's items:
  Before:
   http://www.tf2items.com/id/reaper0268?time=1320668218

  After:
   http://www.tf2items.com/id/reaper0268?time=1320739158

This trader had massive reputation and buys/sells thousands of dollars in
unusuals every month, so with the hijacked account, the hacker then
proceeded to try to scam dozens if not 100+ people out of their
collectables. He came to me and offered $1100 for two of mine, which is
market value for them, but it seemed suspicious. Other people didn't get
their spider-sense in time, and I know of at least ~$3,000 more items that
they scammed away.

I know Valve is overloaded right now, and so I guess the hijackers took the
opportunity to hit hard on the TF2 collector economy. Now there are a whole
lot more Steam Support tickets rolling in for this stuff. :(

[hlds] TF2 map vote not working properly since around Halloween update?

2011-11-08 Thread Joeri van der Velden
One of my TF2 servers is using the ingame map vote system that was added
some time last year.

sv_allow_votes 1
sv_vote_issue_nextlevel_allowed 1
sv_vote_issue_nextlevel_allowextend 1

The vote does take place, but the server doesn't honour it and instead just
moves to the next map in the cycle. I'm also running Sourcemod but I don't
see where that could cause incompatibilities (I'm not using SM's
nominations / mapchooser plugins). Can anyone else confirm it's broken?

Re: [hlds] New exploit for the orangebox engine?

2011-11-08 Thread Mike Hunt

More than likely it is fake. If you read the videos comments, it says that more
information is coming soon (more than likely a link). That link is going to
provide you an executable file that can 'drop' clients from servers, that
executable file probably wont even work, and will be infected with a R.A.T.
(trojan). It's probably some 'script kiddie' trying to build a botnet or keylog
a bunch of people for steam accounts. That is only my opinion though.

I know Valve is overloaded right now, and so I guess the hijackers took
the opportunity to hit hard on the TF2 collector economy. Now there are a
whole lot more Steam Support tickets rolling in for this stuff. :(

How are you getting the files? hldsupdatetool doesn't show it in the

Lets see... Crash clients on connect, Physics freezing, Multiline junk, and
not lets forget our friend LSS. Mind you exploit wise their (it's a small

Still though, I've had this happen a couple times. No logs, nothing printed
to the client, nothing. I was wondering what it was, and now I know. Are
you sure this was fixed last night ics?
