Personally in my opinion and knowing how I like to run my community, I have
three possible combinations of servers I would use. A purely private locked
server for a regulars night or private fun with a group of friends. A
group + match making connect server, where people in my group as well as the
match making crowd can come in. And a group only connect server where only
my friends on my friends list can connect for the simple reason we don't
want any possible random trouble makers coming in. What this would also do
is look for people on my friends, friends list to connect thus only allowing
people on someone's friends list and no match makers coming into this
server.

Also what I would like to see is some sort of reserve system, where I can
specify that I can have 1 or 2 slots or more, configurable by me, to set
aside out of my total player count, to be set as group/community or friends
can join at any time. Also would I would like to see is when the game goes
live a way to search for games that are looking for survivors only or
zombies only, or in other words to look for games that are full of survivors
and seeking zombies only and vice versa. I hope that is understandable.

Now as far as the rep system, I don't think it should be made public what
rep you have except to the person themselves but should be viewable, with
possible hints on how to improve you reputation as well as what you are out
of the total. Such as you are 35/100 in rep points, then have a message
somewhere to tell you what you can do to improve to play with more
cooperative people. And the last thing on the rep system, I think you should
also have a cvar that will limit at what rep point you will allow people to
connect to your servers, that way, in mass, we the server admins can set a
50/100 rep point or what not can connect and basically keep any problem
childs off your server. Less administration = more play time and more fun.

And last but not least, I would like to thank Erik for letting us know they
are working on things and listening to our input. I know at times
personally, it's hard to believe that you guys are listening. And I think
this is a chance for the server admins to pitch in their input and sort of
start helping to reinvent how multiplayer systems work in various games and
to help improve player counts to each admins servers. Well this is my
opinion and I hope this kinda sums up what a lot of people are thinking.

One of the issues I have seen, is that if you run a L4D server on the same
ip as CS or TF2 even if they are on a different port the console gets
spammed with the messages from the other game server's console. Also this is
all on windows, the 4th server on the box will finally totally lock up after
a few hours of running full throughout the night.

Actually the /3Gb switch enables 32 bit operating systems to page memory
above 3Gb of memory rather that memory is physical or virtual. In 32 bit
operating systems client services or programs once they have paged above 2GB
per instance will crash. The 3GB switch for 32 bit operating systems allow
programs to use up to 3GB of memory addressing per instance in fact with 3-4
GB installed into the machine you should see equal virtual memory with
physical memory in most cases. In default configuration Windows will
allocate 2GB for the operating system and 2GB max for all other operations
such as services or programs. With the PAE switches, especially the /userva=
switch you can allow the operating system to issue 3GB of paging/physical
memory to each running instance allowing Windows to only use 1GB. Hence the
reason all 32 bit windows operating systems only paging 4GB max. Depending
on USB devices and how memory are mapped on those most installations of 32
bit (non-server) O/S's only will see a max of about 3.5GB with 4 installed.
The /Userva= switch has a max allowed usage of 3070 which is a full 3Gb most
people find the need to fine tune that usage in increments of 512, but can
be fine tunes in 16-32-64 bit increments if the program you are using
recognizes this. Here is another link a bit more relavent(?) to Vista and
explains the paging situation with 32 vs 64 bit O/S and covers some server
2003 instances.

In this case, physical RAM has little to do with PPM.  Surely, 64-bit Vista
makes a difference with RAM sizes above 4GB, but he's not running out of
physical RAM, he's running out of PPM.  In XP and earlier, you'll want to
try to keep the PPM usage below 150,000, which you can observe using System
Information in Process Explorer.  With Vista, you really don't have to worry
about it.

Not sure how you're using the word paging and you've also got a pretty
important typo in your first sentence.
On 32-bit OS, each process can have up to 2gig of virtual memory, and the
kernel takes the other 2.  On a 32 bit OS with the /3gb switch, the kernel
only takes 1 gig, and _if the process has the correct flag saying it can
use memory over 2gig_ (large address aware iirc), it can then use up to 3.

On a 64-bit OS, the /3gb switch isn't necessary.  Instead, if a process has
large address aware set, it can address up to 4 gigs of memory.  If not,
still 2.

As PPM is a kernel level thing, specifying /3gb switch on 32-bit OS will
reduce the PPM size, and (unless you have large address aware programs that
need the virtual memory, have no beneficial effect)

Last time I had an issue like this was because of video drivers and virtual
memory address spacing. Being on 64 bit you shouldn't have a virtual memory
problem as Windows doesn't have a 2GB limit on 64 bit for applications. SO I
would try looking elsewhere besides your ram, more specifically on the
settings for your video card. If you are running the newest nVidia drivers I
would stear clear of nhancer, and test all your card settings at lower rates
because the newest drivers are a lot stronger than the old ones.

And it wouldn't matter if he was on XP, XP64, Vista or Windows 98SE he would
still have this problem.

  XP x64 is notoriously buggy. Most things just don't work well in it.

I currently have a dual Xeon 2.8 machine, and I have added a Xeon Quad core

I expect from this box compared to my current Dual 2.8? The current 2.8 is
the old netburst style single core HT enabled if that matters much.

I run a fairly small community with 2 CS servers, 1 COD4, and 1 TF2. I know
some of you guys have to have this box. Thanks in advance for the advice,
opinions, or general help!

Yeah most people I have talked to say they run at least as well if not a lot
better than the Dual Xeon 2.8 and 3.2 machines. I'm waiting now for them to
send me my email to access the server. The plan is if it runs better the 2.8
box will be going down. So I suppose it's safe to say then that the box
should hold 2x12 + 1x24 CS 1.6, 1x32 COD4, and 1x24 TF2? The box we are on
now(Dual 2.8) has 2 GB of ram 100mbit connection windows 2003. Same setup
with the new server just different processor, and better ram/harddrives.

Dunno about your other specs but we did the same thing almost and went 
from 1x32 dods 1x24 css and 2x32 tf2 to 2x32 dods 1x24 css 2x32 tf2 1x24 
tf2 1x13 tf2(with tv) and even when theyre all full only get about 90% 
usage with pretty good tick rates still on full load

Granted but my server do not stay populated but a couple hours each night.
And the two that do stay populated are CS 1.6. My normal usage on a busy
month is only about 200 GB. So I think in my particular case 2500 will do
it. Now if I could actually get the servers populated to where I would have

Honestly, I tagged my servers with what I run on my server, such as modded
respawn system etc. But, honestly who cares how anyone else is setting their
servers up? If they get traffic and people stay good, if they don't oh well,
it doesn't affect you in the slightest. And what I would consider a
Vanilla server is a server whose gaming rule set complies with that in
which VALVe setup. IE no spawn modifications, no additional plugins.
Changing cvars such as alltalk doesn't effect the gameplay part of it that
much, but in my opinion I would tag the server as alltalk just so people
can search for it. I think you get the point. Just my $.02.

Unfortunately Michael this is it. I really wish people would use the list

What is with having to delete the contents of the bin folder to make the
server update correctly. Is that something on my end or is anyone else
having this issue? Also when I start with a blank folder with nothing but
the updatetool it always give me a file creation error and stopsthis
game is starting to become the pain in my butt, it never updates

Not to mention that the new scrds isn't the same server, it's built off the
new source stuff. Just install it into it's own directory, what's the point
of having them both in the same, except for saving space. But if you can't
space that space you need to delete something or buy more space from your
provider.

It's a standalone directory.  The HLDS Update Tool will automatically
force the download of these two directories at the same level:  hl2 and
orangebox.  Inside of orangebox will be the srcds_run and srcds_i486 you
need to operate the server.  Sadly, the orangebox name is FORCED despite
our cries.  I would assume since they are even forcing separate required
directories at the same outer root level that they are going to be using
some sort of share of content between future 'orangebox' games.  Good
luck, it's a headache.

 Are was suppose to update a css server and then update a tf2 server into

 how to setup a tf dedicated server.  I suppose I could just copy the css

 server files then copy the tf files over and try it out.  But I prefer to
 know exactly how it is suppose to be setup and also exactly how it is
 suppose to be updated, straight from the horses mouth so to speak :)

I know this isn't a linux box that I have, but running 3 cs 1.6 server and
one TF2 server with it full I'm runnings about 30% cpu on a dual xeon 2.8
box. That's with a 66tick server and scrdsfpsboost running also.

After reading what Kerry has seen with his linux box, I double checked mine.
FC 7
q6600
3 css servers, all active
1 TF2.
TF2 is running at ~45% cpu, and 960+ fps with 24 players.
Not having any problems with it at all other than the map list issue.

I don't think your getting the full info of whats on that box.
I have seen other clans paying extra for a better server from 'them', only
to find that they couldn't get above 60fps with more than 6 players in a 100
tic css server.

I would imagine this is going to be running off the source server. If you
all you need is the game command to update the game, which I would imagine
is TF2 of something along those lines. I dunno though.

Yes, they fix critical things sometimes, but SMP bug in Windows
version is still there for example though I personally consider it
critical. I can come up with long list of relatively simple to
implement features for HL1 but that would be just a waste of time
since HL1 engine is dead. End of story...
