[hlds] CSS: Long disconnect messages crashing servers?

2010-04-26 Thread Matt Lyons
Over the last few days I've had a couple of my servers experience weird
behaviour, pausing, restarting or outright crashing.

Notes:
- Servers are using the beta update from a few days ago.
- Servers are using latest version of SM/Meta Mod running kac and rcon_lock
- rcon TCP port is blocked and rcon password is secure (32 digits of random
letters/numbers)
- No crash dump
- Log file cuts out mid stream.
- Nothing obvious in the log files except for disconnect messages like the
following:

L 04/26/2010 - 16:30:28: Player Name]1260STEAM_0:X:XXXTERRORIST
disconnected (reason
SS)

(Player name and steam ID removed to protect the guilty.)

When such a log entry appears there are lots of comments straight after of
server weirdness. I was just in one of my servers then when it restarted after
the above message.

Anyone else seen this?

2010-04-26 Thread Matt Lyons
Ok after a bit more googling its a hack:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xsC8GtSWuyU

If you parse or stream your log files for monitoring you should probably add a
watch/event for these long disconnect messages as they are using a 3rd party
program to do so.

We call it the wobble bot.

Some cheat authors include this effect so that the use of the cheat is

In some sort of obscure morality cheat authors do this so their cheats

A required update for Team Fortress 2 is now available. Please run

 Game Changes:
 - Reworked the character loadout screens to support future features.
 - Added the ability for players to permanently delete items from
their inventory using the new Backpack menu. This does not reset
achievements. Once an item has been deleted it can never be re-earned
 - Added the ability for players to reset their player stats using
the Reset Stats button on the Stats menu. This does not reset
 achievements
 - Added a player_teleported game event that is sent when a player
 is teleported
 - Updated cp_junction_final to score per-capture instead of per-
round. This fixes the map not working correctly with Tournament mode
 and the stopwatch
 - Scouts now drop the flag if they're carrying it when they start
 phasing

 Fixes:
 - Fixed instances where Steam connection problems would cause some
 unlocked items to be unusable
 - Fixed the custom crosshair menu not clearing itself when None is
 selected for non-English clients
 - Fixed warning about not being able to execute skill1.cfg when
 starting the dedicated server

Make a batch file to update a server.

Wait for the update to finish.
Click Generate zip file.
Upload zipfile to your tcadmin ftp in the game servers TCA.Patches folder
Create a new patch entry in tcadmin

[hlds] [L4D] sv_cheats in server.cfg affecting abilities of players

2008-11-30 Thread Matt Lyons
One of our forum users has figured out that if you put sv_cheats 0 in
your server config the following abilities are changed:

 * Melee nerf. It gets progressivly slower after the first 6-7 swings
 * Smoker tounge reset is longer for a miss (10-15? seconds)
 * Zombies have a spawn cap of 3
 * Zombie minimiun spawn radius is larger (20-30 ingame metres)

More details here: http://games.on.net/forums/viewtopic.php?f=240t=157826

Removing the cvar setting removes the ability changes.

Bug?

I've removed the line from my configs for now.

Personally I see it as the guy who pays the bill makes the rules
(Including who does, and doesn't get kicked).

The community will vote with their feet if admins are too draconian.

We've got some fairly strict rules on what you can and can't do on our
public servers. We even have a bot that parses chat text and instant
bans those that mention common cheat phrases and porn/shock sites.

Sure we get some criticism from the community but the majority love the
fact that our servers are essentially tard free.

If you build it, they will come and all that :)

I wonder if we should be specifying the map via the command line at all.

If you do, or run map blah in the console the server complains the the
steam support library error.

I've removed it from start up on my servers for now and left them
running. I'll see if anyone can connect and play on them since I can't
directly connect and test it myself :-/

Can we get some specs on the banner please?

Size, file type, size restrictions etc...

Eric Smith wrote:
Left 4 Dead will use the new matchmaking system we've been working

The new matchmaking system replaces the traditional server browser.
By running a public dedicated server your server will be added to a
list of servers available for clients to use when playing. Games are
started from a Game Lobby by clients, who are then connected to a
dedicated server when they start the game. When they're done, your
server is added back to the list of available servers. Clients will
be able to Quick Match, Play Online, and Play With Friends when
they want to play a game.

You will still have access to the traditional Message of the Day for
your server. For Left 4 Dead, we've added a banner ad you can create
that will be displayed to clients when they're playing on your
server. There is also a ranking system to show the popularity of
 your server.

This is the first version of what we've been working on, and we're
going to want feedback from all of you once things start turning up
 tomorrow.

Re: [hlds] Half-Life 1 Engine Update Released

2008-10-23 Thread Matt Lyons
Still getting crashes here after about 10mins on all our servers.

No mods, liblist.gam is set to default settings.

bannedcfg banned.cfg is in server.cfg and the file exists. I've
removed exec banned.cfg as well.

After about 10mins the server will restart, no dump file and nothing in
the log file (It just cuts off halfway through an entry).

Short of trying a completely new clean install for all servers I'm out
of ideas :-/

This update fixes crashes on startup if you had a banned.cfg and the
sv_password state not being displayed properly in the serverbrowser.

There is a known bug with servers not listing if you use the setmaster
command, so remove any setmaster calls until we can release a fix for
 the issue.

A new set of Steamworks features have been released for all Half-Life
 1
engine multiplayer games: Counter-Strike 1.6, Condition Zero, Team
Fortress Classic, Deathmatch Classic, Ricochet, Day of Defeat and
 Half-
life 1 Deathmatch. The update includes Steamworks features such as
player avatars in the scoreboard when playing Counter-Strike and
Condition Zero. The update also contains several bug fixes, listed
below. This update will require all game servers to restart.

 Bug Fixes:
 - Removed the need to manually re-login and re-authenticate to Steam
 while in game
 - Fixed a crash on startup when running windowed with a non-standard
 desktop resolution
 - Removed the display of saytext (in-game chat text) from players whom
 you've blocked in Steam friends
 - Locked down several engine cvars to prevent malicious script
 exploits
 - Enforced file consistency on several sprites in Counter-Strike
 - Removed ex_extrapmax cvar (no longer needed)

 Server:
 - Added -noaff command-line option to disable setting of thread
 affinity
 - Added bannedcfg cvar so admins can choose which file is written to
 by the writeid command

This is a required update for all HL1 games.

I created a fresh CS server install, default config and it crashes after
3-4 rounds or about 10 mins with 2 players in game.

Changing exec server.cfg to bannedcfg banned.cfg didn't work either.

I have switched our servers off for now, awaiting a fix.

Several, which are all on the todo list to update. However if its an
out dated server query that's causing the servers to crash it would need
to be fixed asap before the script kiddies/griefers figured out that's
what causes it.

Re: [hlds] Half-Life 1 Engine Update Released

2008-10-22 Thread Matt Lyons
I've had all our servers crash before 1st map change after this update.

However I set up a completely vanilla install and it hasn't crashed yet.
(Going on about 40mins now with players in it).

So its a metamod/amxmod issue by the look of it. Trying a brand new
setup of those mods to try and duplicate the issue now.

Alfred Reynolds wrote:

after trying a vanilla install (i.e no addons or custom

 like this do the same.
