[hlds] HL2 Master Server Addition

2010-05-28 Thread Zoid Kirsch
We have added an additional HL2 Master server at address 72.165.61.153:27015.

I've seen a few scripts posted here using the setmaster dedicated server
console command. Generally, you do not need to manually specify the master
addresses. Additional setmaster commands with other addresses in your
server.cfg will just have your dedicated server trying send updates to
non-existent masters. Servers that restart will automatically detect this new
master server and use it appropriately. There are only three currently active
HL2 Master servers:

216.207.205.99:27011
216.207.205.98:27011
72.165.61.153:27015

[hlds] Steam Client Updated to Refresh Masters

2010-04-15 Thread Zoid Kirsch
We have just released an update to the Steam client that renames the
MasterServers.vdf file to MasterServer2.vdf. This was to ensure all players
refresh the list of Masters. Once you receive the update, your Client will
automatically retrieve and save the master information in this new file.

If you are having any issues listing servers, please make sure you restart and
update your Steam client.

(If you are using the Beta UI update, this will be corrected later in the day,
this update is for the original Steam client).

For the Left 4 Dead series specifically, the geographical based ordering will

[hlds] HL2 Masters Have Moved

The new HL2Masters are now online. Dedicated server operators will want to
restart their servers to pick up the new Master IP addresses. If you have any
manual setmaster configuration commands, please remove them as those older
addresses are no longer valid.

We will be monitoring the transition closely today. If you encounter any

Re: [hlds] HL2 Masters Have Moved

2010-04-14 Thread Zoid Kirsch
Steam clients cache the IP addresses of the list of Masters they last received.
This cached IP address list is no longer valid since the Masters have moved.
The Steam client will take a few minutes to timeout to talking to these old IPs
since it will not receive any replies. Once its timed out a few times, it will
request a new list of Master IP addresses from our servers. Once it receives
this new list that contains the IP addresses they moved to it will then start
receiving server lists again.

The list your posted is the old Master IPs. The Steam client does not write
out the MasterServers.vdf file until it exits. Restart your Steam client (once
it starts successfully listing servers again) and the MasterServers.vdf file
will update with the new addresses.

I hope this clarifies it up for you.

Re: [hlds] HL2 Masters Have Moved

2010-04-14 Thread Zoid Kirsch
Regions are still supported and work exactly like before. In general they
aren't widely used and now that we do IP geographical ordering they are less
useful since you will get sent servers near you first.

There are two current IPs for the masters. One of the major changes was
rewriting them to be multithreaded so now a single multicore machine can handle
many more players requesting server lists. We have two masters for redundancy
and they replicate all server data to each other.

[hlds] Master Server Move

2010-04-13 Thread Zoid Kirsch
On Wednesday April 14th we will be moving the HL2Master servers to a new set of
IP addresses. One of the major new features is the new Masters should return
dedicated servers ordered by their geographical distance from the player
requesting the server list, making for lower latency and better connections.

Dedicated server operators will generally have to restart their dedicated
servers after this move to ensure they will correctly pick up the new addresses
of the these Masters. The server browser in the Steam client and in games such
as Team Fortress 2 will automatically move to the new Masters.

Server operators that manually set their master servers (we recommend against
this practice however) please use hl2master.steampowered.com to refer to them
instead of the IPs directly. This name returns all Master addresses.

We will update once the move is complete.

Re: [hlds] L4D Custom Campaigns + Versioning Issue

2009-07-15 Thread Zoid Kirsch
This is unfortunate. There is a Version field specifically in the mission
file used to describe the campaign to matchmaking. Note that this version
field is an integer (as documented explicitly in the mission file example). If
he listed the version as 6.0 and 6.1 in the mission file, the integer
parser will both treat them as version 6.

If you have the authors email, let him know that using a different integer
value in the version field will correctly prevent cross version joining. It
will also prompt users with the old version to upgrade to the new one when
seeing friends playing on the new version.

Future versions of Left 4 Dead will warn about invalid characters in the
version field.

I've finally had a chance to play the Death Aboard custom campaign. It's an
excellent offering, but ran into a few issues regarding the 6.0 and the 6.1
releases (possibly other versions may have had the same issue described
below).
http://www.l4dmods.com/index.php?option=com_joomloadsview=packageItemid=2packageId=156

In Death Aboard, the author of a campaign (Diputs) has released a few
different versions of the campaign with different names for the VPK
(e.g.dthbrd61.vpk vs dthbrd6.vpk). Each VPK includes an updated campaign
name which includes the version number (Death Aboard 6.1).

Just from observing my friends, users with both versions installed are able
to click the Join button to enter the lobby, but the lobby system somehow
gets confused and boots them. Once my friends removed the old version of
the campaign then everything worked as expected.

Anyone else encounter this issue?

[hlds] Upcoming Left 4 Dead Server Changes

2009-04-20 Thread Zoid Kirsch
I'm a developer at Valve who is working on the Left 4 Dead Survival pack
update. We've made several changes to server operation that we'd like to give
our server operators a heads up on.

Since Left 4 Dead will now support three different game modes, we removed the
console variable director_no_human_zombies and added a new variable called
mp_gamemode which can be set to coop, versus and survival. This
variable is set by lobby reservation, so a normal server running in lobby mode
will require no changes by the server operator. If you are running in LAN mode
without lobbies, you will need to set mp_gamemode before you load a map. For
example, use mp_gamemode survival; map l4d_sv_lighthouse to load the new
Lighthouse map in Survival mode.

We have extended sv_gamestypes to also include survival. The default value
is now coop, versus, survival. This may cause issues for some servers that
have a lot of tags in addition to the defaults. We realize this is problem and
adjusted sv_showtags to show the truncated tags to help server operators see
if they have reached the 63 character limit.

The tags issue will be fixed in the forthcoming third party campaign
matchmaking update. We have extended the master servers so heartbeats will be
sent as two distinct packets, one containing the existing server heartbeat, and
another containing additional game data. This game data will contain all the
matchmaking server tags such as sv_gametypes, and the list of third party
campaign missions installed. This third party campaign list will be used by
people searching for servers with third party campaigns installed. Server
operators will install the VPK file of the campaign that includes the maps (and
associated models, etc) as well as a mission description file that describes
the campaign and its name used for matchmaking. We hope that as various third
party campaigns become popular, more server operators will install them giving
a larger base for players to find servers for those campaigns.
