[hlds] Counter-Strike: Source Beta Update Released

2011-08-30 Thread Jon Lippincott
The replay system has been added and is now live.

You can find the document on setting up a replay server
herehttp://forums.steampowered.com/forums/showthread.php?p=22333197.

Please post feedback about the system
herehttp://forums.steampowered.com/forums/showthread.php?t=2073934.

If you discover any major issues, please mail me directly at
j...@valvesoftware.com.

There are some UI issues at the moment, and a crash on exit that we are aware
of. We are working on a patch to fix these issues, but wanted to get the
system out sooner rather than later.

Enjoy!

Strangely enough I mentioned in another mail thread, we have a couple of
win2k3 servers (mostly we have linux) and those have never had to have
srcdsbooster or anything (just default install, no extra apps at all
running) and run at 500fps (if fps_max is 600). Not sure why that is and
others don't but happy to check any processes that someone may think is
doing it and see if its running.

I'm guessing that oddly enough if a way is found to increase fps it will hit
the same problem though anyway and get the same bad performance (if thats
the issue). We don't run 100tick any more so can't comment on cpu util for
that, just 66.

Re: [hlds] Counter-Strike: Source Beta update released

This is really odd. The problem is that system timer resolution can be
changed once after OS was started and program does not really need to
keep running after that so the list of processes won't help I'm
afraid... Do you have ogswatcher or similar tool?

Roman

Hiya, nope don't have anything like that. Just have the servers and perl
scripts managing them (which I don't think could do anything like that).
We're rebuilding a win2k3 box in the near future, so I'll try and do a css
server straight away before anything else to test just to confirm when its
done.

Activestate or cygwin? Cygwin I know sets the highres timer up.

This is true. Cygwin port of sleep utility is doing this, probably
some other utilities as well.

I don't know what you guys did, but with this beta and/or the last
engine update, performance has been greatly improved on the dual Xeon
2.8GHZ / 2.4 Linux kernel machine I'm running this on. Before this,
the server would inexplicably use 99% with a mere 10 players, but a
year or so before that it could handle up to 32 players just fine!

Well Windows performance has been declining at an ever increasing rate

40 player 100 tickrate servers with mods became
32 player 100 tickrate servers with mods which became
32 player 100 tickrate servers without mods which became
32 player 66 tickrate servers without mods which became
18 player 66 tickrate servers because we gave up trying to extract any sort
of performance out of machines.

If we have to drop the tickrate or player numbers any lower we may as well
shut down CSS altogether.
