Re: [hlds] Vac2 - Proff positive?

2005-09-09 Thread Graham Robinson
I have personally seen less cheaters on my server and I can actually
see lists on mine of people that have been vac banned (
http://uocs.hlstatsx.com/ click on VAC cheater list). Not a conclusive
list but at least it shows people are getting caught.

If you want to catch cheaters for on the spot kicking then have a look
at Wraven's autoban plugin. It's still in beta but getting better all
the time. My server suffers with lag spikes occasionally which seemed
to create a lot of false positives with 0.4.
http://www.mani-admin-plugin.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=12812

P.S. I can highly recommend HLstatsX hosting if you want statistics
for your server. Ridiculously cheap and great email support if you buy
hosting.

Re: [hlds] Vac2 - Proff positive?

2005-09-09 Thread James Tucker

Firstly, I would like to point out, that officially VAC2 has not been
released but instead is in the position of officially still beta,
however VAC2 is now enabled by default. At least, this is as much has
been stated.

VAC2 has definitions for some of the older exploits, however there are
very commonly mirrored and well known websites which house working
exploits for Steam games which could be easily updated.

VAC2 was never supposed to do anything particularly special or new, as
such I personally had no un-reasonable expectations about it. It does
not enforce full file checks like many of the punkbuster solutions, many
clients would say this is a good thing, as it takes one hell of a long
time to do. The other issue with that is, should it be post-steam or
pre-steam resources? (packed/unpacked, encrypted/unencrypted).

As far as memory resource usage is concerned, Steam could, and should
take an active interest in Software and Hardware DEP solutions, amoung
other things. This having been said, some of the relevant hacks do not
appear in kernel or user space, they appear on code loaded onto the
graphics card itself. (was that released?)

Several of the admin plugins have now taken an interest too, scanning
for the cvars which are added by these systems. This is a very crude
method of course, resulting in a clear and simple retaliation from
crack/cheat builders.

If you want a slightly more comprehensive service, you might try
Steambans, however this is not the same thing. There is lots of hype
surrounding this HackCam thing. I refuse to publicly state my opinions
on that, all I can say is, this level of technological development has
far greater business value than the games industry. As the producer has
refused to contact me regarding substantial (far more so than the games
industry can offer) development contracts, I suspect this product does
not exist in reality. He is currently hiding behind a NDA, however once
again, the size of contracts offered would not hold him quiet for long
if he had such a product to sell.

One of the final things to note. Many people complain that they've never
seen VAC2 working, or that it never catches cheaters. The important
thing to remember here is that with VAC2, once they are caught, that
steam id, they are gone, one time, and forever. I have seen it work.

2005-09-08 Thread [GS]BeNt

I beg to differ. As far as I can tell the cheating level on my server has
went down 5 fold.Occasionally I saw a hack come through that was an
aimbot/wallhack combo. As usual thought there will always be cheating in
Cs/HL mods no matter what they do.I wish they could plug the hole though.

VAC works great in Source, we see no cheats, we do not receive cheat
reports, and if we do get the occasional one, its just a disgruntled user
who been beaten by somebody good. Cheating as far as I can tell does not
exist in Source.
VAC on CS 1.6 on the other hand does not appear to be doing anything to
limit the amount of cheats in VAC secured servers. We can join any of our CS
1.6 servers and quickly spot multiple blatant cheats, (speedhacks, shakey
screen bots, blatant not even bothering to try and hide it wallhacks,
spinbots), we receive numerous cheat reports daily, the cheating on CS
1.6has not been affected whatsoever in CS
1.6.
That is the state of play as I currently see it.

I've seen many cheats in Source, but they do seem much fewer lately.

The one where players would spin around in circles and constantly get head
shots was even more obvious than most cheats. When Beetle's mod added checks
for cvars used in common cheats, a lot of players on the server I play on
got banned until either the cheats were updated or discontinued.

don't forget, vac bans don't take effect immediately. It's not until
some days later that a cheater gets banned. So while you may see some
