RE: motherboard for 1U case

2001-09-20 Thread Stan Hoeppner

The Orbs are neat looking, but they don't cool all that well compared to
others.

Check this out:

http://www.tomshardware.com/cpu/01q2/010521/index.html

As far as fan quality, I don't think Tom's goes into that much detail, but
keep in mind, many times you do get what you pay for.

List of high quality long life fans:

NMB
Nidec
Sanyo Denki (San Ace, same thing)
Panaflow (Panasonic)
Oratek

to name just a few..

Well, what about more general-purpose coolers than those
 specifically for 1U
use? What about for regular towers? I don't know what
 bearing brands they're
using in these fans... I've heard things like Blue Orbs are
 cool for socket A
 CPU's, but...

 coolers, BUT, who
wants to have to replace it when it fails, and takes the
 CPU with it?

The thing I hate about Cooler Master units is that they use
 low grade ball
bearing fans such as Moto1 and TopMotor. They don't have
 much longevity in
my experience...about a year on a hot CPU before the heat
 absorbed by the
  bearings causes them to fail.

Now, if you can find a cooler with a Nidec, NMB, Sanyo
 Denki, or Oratek fan

 choke 'em with soot,
and even that sometimes won't cause them to fail.

I'd still like to find out who the cooler supplier is to
 GigaByte for that
SR101 server, as it looks to be the ticket for 1U CPU cooling.

specifically for 1U cases. I haven't found them

looked that hard.

If you want to use a dual board with 1 CPU for now, and

with the pre built solution. A generic 1U case just isn't
   going to cut it
in the air flow (cooling) department.

If you're strictly going to go single CPU, you should be
   fine. A Duron at
750 to 1000Mhz should be able to handle 40 players easy
   enough, unless
you're running a bunch of other shit too: hlstats, sql

solution...I'll see what I can dig up. Then again, who

Heh, yeah, but they often go way the hell overboard with 6 fans stuck all
 in
and on the case and liquid nitrogen running through the system or whatever
 :)
I'm just looking for a good fan/heatsink combo I can trust to quietly keep
 the
CPU at optimal temps. No overclocking, $45 fan clusters, etc... Just good,
simple, This off-the-shelf fan was just plain the best performer :)

I'll check out those sites, though. Thanks for the URL's...
