That was in. No clarification of any sort. No This is the way it is, if it isn't this their cheating or I'll have someone look into it and get back with you or anything of that sort. I had said I had read the manual and what do I get? A smartass UA person pasting the page out of the manual in my post. Yea, that's real helpful. I made the change, no difference and that was that. No This is a known bug. It will be addressed in a future release or anything of the sort. Couple of weeks later they release the next version with my problem specifically addressed. Obviously they knew it was a known bug but rather than address it, they just left me twisting in the wind. I wasted a fair amount of time trying to resolve something on my end that I assumed (Yea, I know all about ASS U ME) was a problem I was having and not a support issue with HLGuard because they didn't bother addressing my post in their forums. Where's the support in either of those scenarios? At least here you have people running the same things that can compare notes. FWIW, I appreciate the effort these guys are making. Re: [hlds_linux] Cheating in a nutshell
I can understand your frustration. I run an op4 server and it's difficult without having VAC. Cheaters seem more brazen than ever. Hlguard does seem to work fine for me(under linux). The only issue I have with it right now is for some reason, it reports I try to hack lambert and various other messages on folks that I know and are not cheating(their scores are normal). I posted error on UA and several other people are having problem, and no one can figure out where these are coming from. Other than that it's been great. UA and the hard work they do is the only reason I'm still running a server. I love the game, and the folks I've met through running my server are some great people, but there there is some 12 year old with a mouth like a sailor getting 58 to 0 on a map with no good camping spots, it can be annoying to everyone. Some things I've found that help: 1. Give some kind of Admin access to your trusted users that have been playing for awhile and can distinguish between cheaters and good players, and can be objective if they are legitamately gettign their butt kicked. Make sure they know how to get wonid's, ban, etc. 2. Those players that are Admin, have them put Admin in their name. Cheaters tend not to hang around if they know Admins watch site. 3. Install Cheating Death, in optional mode. If an admin thinks someone is cheating, they can ask suspected cheater to run cheating Death. Most people are cool with it, like the policy and I've gotten several compliments on it. What is really funny, are the people that completely refuse to run Cheating Death when asked, and YET swear they arent' cheating, they are just good. It is hilarious how vehement they are. If you arent' cheating, you shouldn't have a problem with running it. 4. Next version of HLGuard should help a lot, it's coming out soon. And VAC will eventually be coming for more mods. 5. The global ban from WON on cheater's Wonid's that will be happening soon This is the coolest thing, can't wait the OGC babies cry on their little forums when they get bannned. Yeah there are other stolen wonid's they can use for now, but those will eventually run out. -[USA]i see dead people... - Original Message - From: Rick and Cheryl [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: Monday, August 19, 2002 4:56 PM Subject: [hlds_linux] Cheating in a nutshell I am a realist and as much as I hate to say it, this problem is getting much worse very quickly. I am at the point where I think I am just going to take the server down because it is simply not worth it. Gazing into the horizon for that next anti-cheat that will solve our problems might be something you people want to fool yourselves with but I have been in this biz long enough to know better. HLGuard just don't cut it, the thing causes more problems than it solves. My server runs flawlessly without it but as soon as I try to use it (as I have 4 times now) all kinds of things go wrong... Custom maps crash at load, doors and elevators cease to work in a seemingly random manner and lag spikes become common. Please don't take this as a slam against UA, I applaud them for trying and know a lot of effort is put into it but HLGuard is just not a viable solution for me. This VAC which supposedly will help (when released for TFC) does not hold much promise in my book. The cheat community seems to be far more active than Valve's anti-cheat team and I honestly think they release revisions to circumvent faster than Valve can hack out new code. It is nothing but a vicious circle with no end in sight and I for one don't have that kind of time to devote to a game that consumes bandwidth and makes us no profit what so ever. The only real solution would be to identify and ban cheaters but that has serious problems too. The average cheater has plenty of keys and even most broadband connections now have a dynamic IP so what is a person to do, ban whole nodes by the hundreds? Not to mention the general pain in the ass it is to ban by IP to begin with. I don't see this getting better in the near future and the fact is that I spend almost as much time dicking around with a gameserver that makes us nothing as I do managing the four *nix servers we make our living off of. I hope the cheaters are happy because they are ruining this entire gaming community and then what are they going to do, go find another game to ruin I suppose. Any linux distro should be good as long as it's recent and supports your hardware. -[USA]i see dead people... ___ To unsubscribe, edit your list preferences, or view the list archives, please visit: http://list.valvesoftware.com/mailman/listinfo/hlds_linux

Which every _good_ list poster will do before sending a reply, right? :) Well, yes. I myself follow this simple rule (most of the time) . However, good luck trying to change ANYONE on this list. ___ To unsubscribe, edit your list preferences, or view the list archives, please visit: http://list.valvesoftware.com/mailman/listinfo/hlds_linux
RE: [hlds_linux] [OT] spiders/bots and email archives
I like Brian's Sig it shows creativity and art in the form of ASCII. If you have a problem with it, then go else with it. You are probably envious because you can't have a sig that looks like Brians. I use Outlook 2000 and it shows up just fine. Thanks, Daniel Reinhardt I vote the guy with the stupid sig off our island. Oh wait, were we voting or just telling people to go else with it? God damn Outlook users. ___ To unsubscribe, edit your list preferences, or view the list archives, please visit: http://list.valvesoftware.com/mailman/listinfo/hlds_linux

Actually, I'd say that page is a disservice to the BSD* community -- to me it portrays BSD users as being just as stupid and immature as the Linux users it is criticising. Fortunately, I know that neither generalisation is at all accurate. I know. I don't agree with that website. I was just trying to make a joke. Sorry. ___ To unsubscribe, edit your list preferences, or view the list archives, please visit: http://list.valvesoftware.com/mailman/listinfo/hlds_linux
[hlds_linux] 2 year old WON id Shepard is this a jacked id?
This is a multi-part message in MIME format. -- [ Picked text/plain from multipart/alternative ] Hi Everyone, Tonight on my server (Op4 DM, i see dead people..) there was a Shepard that connected that was playing *extremely* well wasting very experienced players I know , and moving at speeds faster than are possible in a straight like, and he did not have long jump. I'm pretty sure they were cheating. What makes it really suspicious is that this persons WONID is over 2 years old ( 1348704 ) yet they are playing under Shepard the most generic op4 name possible. He said he only been playing, get this, a week! I looked thru my logs and it's the only name he's ever connected under since yesterday. Does this person have a jacked WONID, and if so is there way to find out if it's been stolen or key generated, which I've heard folks that are into cheating do?? Thanks for any input on this, -i see dead people... -- ___ To unsubscribe, edit your list preferences, or view the list archives, please visit: http://list.valvesoftware.com/mailman/listinfo/hlds_linux
Re: [hlds_linux] [OT] adminmod plugin
do you have a link to this mod? if so I'll take a look at it and see what needs to be done. also, what does meta list in your console say? On Tue, 4 Jun 2002, Jay Anstiss wrote: Hi folks - before anyone asks, yes - I have tried the adminmod forums (and also a chatroom), but have had no success, so forgive me for asking here... I have downloaded a plugin that announces the arrival of admins on a server, converted it to an amx file and placed it in the dlls dir within the csrtike dir. The server has been restarted but so far it does not seem to announce my (or a friends arrival) joining the server. It didn't really explain what else needs to be done (if anything does), but I'm wondering if anything else needs to be done, like perhaps editing some config or such. If anyone can help, please do! jay.
