[hlds_linux] What distro will Valve target for dedicated servers, now that Ubuntu is stripping-out 32-bit support?

2019-07-19 Thread Mecha Weasel
A while back it was announced that Ubuntu will be dropping 32-bit/i386
packages from their next LTS distro (20.04).
A question primarily to Valve ...

They have since walked that back SLIGHTLY, but still it raises the question
about Valve support for SRCDS and HLDS on Ubuntu.

The last I recall from Valve, was that everything ran as 32-bit under
Ubuntu (non-change-root), and on non-Ubuntu it was still 32-bit but run in
a change-root?

Or maybe do something crazy like make a Valve-distro like SteamOS - but for
the dedicated-server side (SteamServerOS?)?

Is there any information available as to what Valve's stategry will be for
the future?

Will they be moving from Ubuntu to another distro as their primary target?
Will they be distributing SRCDS and HLDS compiled for 64-bit/amd64 instead?
If so, will they commit to continuing to keep HLDS-based game running, or
stop supporting-them (HL1, CS 1.x, TFC, etc.)?

What about for games where the client-side is also available for Linux
(generally in addition to SteamOS)?

Just wondering what (if any) future there is for gaming communities hosting
servers for these games, as I can not think of any of them that are 64-bit.

Always sad to more long term communities say good-bye. :-)

Very few of us left date-back to TheCLQ days, and when CS was "new" (or
even beta).

"LA Dream Team" (LADT, circa 1998/1999), begot "Weasel's Lair", begot
"Freaks & Misfits".

Best wishes.

[hlds_linux] Wierd issue with MetaMod:Source after recent CS:GO update (2021-04-28?)

2021-05-02 Thread Mecha Weasel
My CS:GO install updated a few day ago, and ever since then I noticed
SourceMod stopped working. Upon further investigation, MetaMod:Source was
no longer loading either.

Here's the CS:GO information from the SCRDS console:
Quote:
Protocol version 13788 [1263/1263]
Exe version 1.37.8.8 (csgo)
Exe build: 01:01:24 Apr 28 2021 (820 (730)

Everything was working fine before this with slightly older MMS/SM stable
releases.

I tried updating to:

mmsource-1.11.0-git1144-linux
~ and ~
sourcemod-1.10.0-git6502-linux

I tried re-creating the .VDF files and such, in case the defaults were no
longer valid. But, that made no difference.

However, that did not resolve the issues.

It's almost as-if CS:GO is no-longer trying to load SRCDS plug-ins at all?
Like not searching for and processing .VDF files?
- or maybe not finding the .VDF files?

Does this mean Valve changed something with the search-paths, and I need to
hack game-info or something?

2021-05-02 Thread Mecha Weasel
Updated resolution here:
https://forums.alliedmods.net/showthread.php?p=2745732

Basically, specify extension (.dll or .so as appropriate to platform) in
the metamod.vdf file.
Seems like something changed handling of that in CS:GO server.

Does not seem to be necessary to that in the sourcemod.vdf file though.

No worries. Thanks for the reply and ideas! ("thoughts and prayers"?).

I'm just going to abandon the idea of using more than one linux user to run
it under.
That's the easiest path forward right now.

Glad I don't have to run processes like that for work in a "secure"
environment!
The SecOps folks would be like: "What do you mean you can't specify exactly
what ports and paths the process uses?"
:-)

[hlds_linux] Error writing to /tmp/dumps during SteamCMD install of game-server?

2021-02-23 Thread Mecha Weasel
Hmm... I am trying for the first time to have game-server instances running
under different simultaneous (non-root/non-sudo/unprivileged) linux users,
and noticed that SteamCMD is failing during a SourceDS install for a game,
complaining about a "disk write" error and something to do with
"/tmp/dumps"?

I deleted it, and let it get re-created, but SteamCMD *still *throws a
"disk write" error.

This is under Debian Linux 10 (Linux 4.19.0-14-amd64 on x86_64).

Anyone seen and overcome this?
Sample below ...

[ 0%] Checking for available updates...
[] Verifying installation...

-- type 'quit' to exit --
Loading Steam API...OK.

Connecting anonymously to Steam Public...Logged in OK
Waiting for user info...OK
ERROR! Failed to install app '295230' (Disk write failure)

Re: [hlds_linux] Error writing to /tmp/dumps during SteamCMD install of game-server?

2021-02-23 Thread Mecha Weasel
Yep, disk space is wide open.
Tried opening-up perms on /tmp/dumps to new user or even just "users", did
not help.
In fact, it broke SteamCMD similarly under the user that I normally use.
Deleting with/without manually re-creating /tmp/dumps still had same issues.
Had to reboot to get /tmp cleaned-up and everything working for
normal/existing game server user.

Just weird that I would really like to keep both users 100% isolated from
each other and non-priv. But, I don't see any way to tell SteamCMD to not
use that shared /tmp/dumps folder.

Re: [hlds_linux] Error writing to /tmp/dumps during SteamCMD install of game-server?

2021-02-23 Thread Mecha Weasel
lol, I presume there's no way to specify that port or range of ports for
SteamCMD to use either ...

Loading Steam API...CreateBoundSocket: ::bind couldn't find an open port
between 27060 and 27060

wow, 27060-thru-27060 such a wide range! and obviously friendly to multiple
instances.

But, yeah noticed the extra Steam-spam in the console for sure. ;-)

[hlds_linux] @Valve any Log4J components?

2021-12-17 Thread Mecha Weasel
Are there any Log4J library calls in in any of the customer-side stuff
(client or server, Linux or Windows), such as:
* SteamClient
* SteamCMD
* HLDS?
* SrcDS?
* Various Valve game code?

Worried about possible Log4Shell vulnerabilities obviously.

oh thats too bad. This list is really for dedicated-server stuff .
However, I am sure if anyone knows anything about why the client might be
misbehaving, they will chime-in.

Re: [hlds_linux] Autoupdate CS2 linux dedicated server

2023-12-07 Thread Mecha Weasel
You can use cron job to force an update dailly, but that may mean nobody
can play on your server for most of a day while waiting for it to be
updated.
That's why I created the scripts the "check" if the released version in
Steam is different that whats already running.
If it is, then it forces and update, otherwise it doesn't do anything.
That way I can have that run more regularly (hourly) and automatically
apply the update.

I have several scripts involved actually, not just one.
- Script that "runs" the server interactively under SSH.
- Script that "starts" the run script in the background using GNU Screen
utility - giving it a name to use to reconnect or stop it later.
- Script that "stops" the server running under GNU Screen utility above.
- Script that "updates" the server forcibly using SteamCMD.
- Script that "checks" to see if an update should be applied.

There's lots of other maintenance stuff my scripts do to (zip old log
files, re-enforce some permissions that might get messed-up, overwrite some
critical customized files after an update, etc.).

I can e-mail you a copy of my "check" script for CS2 for reference, but you
wont be able to use it directly because of all the external
dependencies (calling my other scripts, etc.).
But if it helps you see how to parse the steam.ini file, the Steam API
call's results, etc - certainly willing to share.

Re: [hlds_linux] Autoupdate CS2 linux dedicated server

2023-12-07 Thread Mecha Weasel
PS: I have had weird issues before with trying to do an update on a
SteamCMD-delivered app, while it is running. So, I always shut-it down
before trying to update it, and then restart it afterwards. So, my "check"
script does that (only if an update is available).

Re: [hlds_linux] Autoupdate CS2 linux dedicated server

2023-12-06 Thread Mecha Weasel
I am doing basically the same thing I do with other Source games:

I have a "check" script that runs every hour. It checks information from
the game's steam.inf file using the Steam API update check URL (example:
http://api.steampowered.com/ISteamApps/UpToDateCheck/v1?appid=$SERVER_APPID=$SERVER_CURRENT_VERSION=xml)
to see if a newer version of the app is available in Steam.

If so, it then kicks-off an "update" script that basically invokes the
SteamCMD app update for that appid (730 now for CS).

Seems to be working, but still keeping an eye on it.

Any instructions anywhere on how to actually accomplish this via SteamCMD?

Re: [hlds_linux] 128 tick CS2 server

2024-03-21 Thread Mecha Weasel
It's not Source engine though. It's Source2.

[hlds_linux] FastDL (sv_downloadurl) not working in Half-Life (HL1)?

2024-06-07 Thread Mecha Weasel
I noticed today that when reconnecting from a new client to my HL1 servers,
that downloads do not appear to be coming-down via FastDL?

I set this up a long time ago and worked (probably literally for years).
I am not sure when it stopped working.
Maybe with the 25 anniversary update?

I checked:
* Server CVAR: sv_downloadurl is set to the correct URL still.
* Web-Site: The content is in the same file structure as before, matching
the game/mod's sub-folder structure (sounds sub-folder, maps sub-folder,
models sub-folder, etc.).
* Web-Site: I can browse to the URL used in sv_downloadurl and everything
is in place - in the expected sub-folders, etc.

Re: [hlds_linux] FastDL (sv_downloadurl) not working in Half-Life (HL1)?

2024-06-08 Thread Mecha Weasel
Interestingly I am using an FQDN instead of the IP address directly (always
have actually), but I will tinker with that and take a look at logging on
the web-server side.

Thanks for the help!

2024-06-08 Thread Mecha Weasel
Thanks, will definitely try that!
Also noticed recently, it might not be working for my CS 1.6 servers either.
Suddenly custom downloads are taking forever.

Re: [hlds_linux] FastDL (sv_downloadurl) not working in Half-Life (HL1)?

2024-06-08 Thread Mecha Weasel
Changed I made that seem to be working (for anyone else's reference):

* Changed my back-end Apache2 web-server config to accept connection
without FQDN.
* That Apache2 virtual-server used the same content served by the FQDN
virtual server.
* Changed sv_downloadurl to use the IP address and path (example: "
http://w.x.y.z/folder/gameormodhere;).
* Connected from a new machine that did not already connect to the server
(actually, completely new HL1 install).
* Everything seems to be working again!
* Downloads are actually FAST again.
* I know I lived through the pre-FastDL era but, my God!, that was PAINFUL
before! I forgot how much it used to hurt!

Thanks everyone for the help!
