Re: [Hpr] mumble

2020-12-28 Thread Kevin Wisher
We now have two alternative Mumble Servers to use. Someone needs to make
the official decision on which one to use. Dave Lee has offered his and so
has Delwin, SkyeHaven. The connection info for each is below. I need a
final decision before this Thursday morning so I can connect for my audio
stream service. I will only be doing the stream broadcast plus recording
from it for the person who decides to publish the content.

Dave Lee
server: mumble.otherside.network
port: 64738

SkyeHaven
server: chatter.skyehaven.net
port: 64738

Re: [Hpr] mumble

2020-12-24 Thread Kevin Wisher
According to my brief testing on the Ubuntu 16.04 based O/S and the older
Mumble Server version, I would suggest an upgrade to Ubuntu 18.04 or the
newer Mumble Server version. I've seen some newer Mumble Client versions
running on some Ubuntu 20.04 versions that have connection errors.

Since someone asked about the HPR Mumble server, I’d like to report several
connection errors using the latest Mumble Client app, 13.3.3. I can provide

Ken Fallon,

The HPR Mumble server is running on Ubuntu 16.04.x. Do you personally have
access for a server upgrade?

[Hpr] New Year Show audio quality

2020-02-25 Thread Kevin Wisher
Hello hackers,

Heard through the grapevine about the poor quality of the New Year audio.
Guess I should have listened to the final output before uploading. I
assumed the default Audacity truncate silence settings were good. I went
back and adjusted the settings and produced better results. Please reply
back to this email if you wish to download the new files before I go to the
trouble of sharing them somehow.

Ken & Dave,

I'm assuming it would be too much trouble to replace the original files
with the new ones?

Sorry about the poor quality.

I don't care for the espeak and English is my native language. I listen to

[Hpr] Python coders needed

2018-01-22 Thread Kevin Wisher
Hello HPR community,

I'd like to suggest a community python coding project (since I can't code
my way out of a wet paper bag) that would benefit the HPR IRC channel.
Currently there are two bots that are normally in the channel. Krayon is
the owner of OggBot and I am the owner of B0tly. Since OggBot seems to be
MIA from the channel quite often, I'd like to suggest a new python module
for B0tly to help out with it's custom functions.

B0tly is based off the Sopel IRC Bot project and info can be found:
https://github.com/sopel-irc

Not sure it's possible but a feature I'd like to see for B0tly would be to
check for the presence of OggBot in the channel before responding to it's
normal commands. That way there would not be duplicate chatter when both
are in the channel.

Thoughts & ideas ???

Re: [Hpr] New Year's Show update

2015-12-24 Thread Kevin Wisher
Is the show note template available that was used on k5tux's epad for the
last couple of years? Might be a good idea to ask k5tux for the use of his
epad server again.

I'd also suggest asking Delwin for the use of his Mumble server as John
Nuesteter has to pay fees for more than 20 connections on his Mumble
server. IMHO, doesn't seem fair asking him to fork out his own money for
this community event.

Re: [Hpr] Getting In New Contributors

2015-09-15 Thread Kevin Wisher
Is there a promo for HPR that can be sent to the various Linux/FOSS
oriented podcasts so that they can include in their episodes? As a
contributor to one such podcast we would gladly add it to each episode.

Also, we are a little more than 3 months away from the annual HPR New Year
show. This would be a great time to start planning for it and how to use it
for promotion.

My suggestion would be to cut it back to 12-16 hours and move it to another
date that is not on a holiday. As far as the accessibility issue, I'll have
to defer to those who can better advise on what needs to be changed.

original 12 hr format? At the risk of offending our round the world
listeners, until about 9-10am my time, there was usually just me and
one other person talking, and participation dropped of after midnight
in California (sorry JRullo, we may have to leave New year's in Hawaii
 to the after show).

What else could we do differently? I know there were some
accessibility issues in Mumble (Jonathan tells me he solves them with
menu shortcuts). If we want to do something, we have a year to come
up with an accessibility how-to, contribute accessibility friendly
code, or find a different platform.

Re: [Hpr] New year show planning

2014-12-13 Thread Kevin Wisher
IMHO, a 5+ hour (minus the silence removed) podcast episode is too long. My
first thoughts were to chunk them at every 2 hours and that way you have
the new timezone welcome at the start of each episode. This would give us
13 episodes plus any after show recordings. Maybe that's too many?? I'm
willing to help with the editing and can do the first 10-12 hours.

What say ye?

I was thinking, maybe we could set up a shared notes taking space like

in the Mumble at any giventime could contribute by recording the
current topic of discusion at any given time, ie. 14:30 GMT, back on
food. This would help create shownotes.

I was thinking a Pastebin, but I don't know how it responds to
multiple users editing the document at the same time. We need
something that allows edits w/o credentials and can handle more than
 one user doing simultaeous updates.

If there are no suggestions by Sunday,I'll see what I can find, set up
an account, and put a link back into HPR news.

Re: [Hpr] Shared pad for show notes for the New Years show

2013-12-27 Thread Kevin Wisher
The new ownCloud ver.6 now has collaborative document editing. I've setup a
public share at the link below. Please give it a try and let me know what
everyone thinks.

This is an notion that occurred to me today. I haven't fleshed out
with reseach yet, but i was hoping someone on the list might suggest a
 perfect tool.

I was thinking, maybe we could set up a shared notes taking space like
Etherpad or Google docs we could link to the HPR homepage. Whoever is
in the Mumble at any giventime could contribute by recording the
current topic of discusion at any given time, ie.
