[IAEP] E-Books for Sugar on a Stick (Blueberry)

2009-11-17 Thread Sebastian Dziallas
Hi all,

as you may know, we're going to ship some selected e-books in the
Journal of the Blueberry release. For providing high-quality e-books
instead of simple texts (as well as fo technical simplicity), we're
going to use e-books from epubBooks (www.epubbooks.com)!

Right now, I've just included Alice in Wonderland (which comes with nice
images in this edition), but I encourage everybody to go through the
catalog on that website and to point out favorites.

Thanks to Sayamindu for pointing to that site! :)

I dont know (yet, Ill check soon) about quality of ePub version, but
(http://manybooks.net/) seems to have books from several different languages...
Maybe one out of a selection of languages would make sense...

2009-11-17 Thread Sean DALY
Yes, very important to show Sugar supporting local languages cultures.

I think the best way forward is for all of us to find 1-2 EPUB eBooks
in languages other than English; manageable number of books to preload
Journal with.

At launch time we can have a wiki page explaining how to find and load an eBook.

Sebastian, will this pose difficulties? If so how can we help?

thanks
Sean

really have absolutely no issue regarding the provider.
Once I realized that in that site there weren't non EN titles you I just made

sorry to keep the off-topic on topic, :-), but in my experience the
possibility to access stuff in English is one of the biggest calls for Sugar
use, especially maybe in non-English places.

2009-11-17 Thread Sean DALY
It's an excellent point; after all, Mingoville
http://www.mingoville.com/ based in Denmark I believe claims over 1
million users, 100+ activities for children to practice English.

But there's another facet: dominant languages such as English,
Spanish, French, put pressure on minority languages. Sugar has a role
to play supporting many languages, not just in the interface, but in
content. There have been suggestions in the past that we position
Sugar as a great way to learn English, and indeed it can be
(especially in a connected environment), but I feel English should not
be privileged over local languages.

My concern is the timing... Sebastian is under pressure for a December
8th launch and will need help collating books.

The Blueberry launch is also threatened by sugaronastick.com, which as
long as it is up will create confusion.

FWIW, I have a Bengali ebook with nonsense rhymes in Bengali as a EPUB
(I had hacked it together to demonstrate that Read can handle fonts
embedded in EPUB files - but the fonts need to be installed in the
system to render the Table of Content properly). If you want, I can
polish it up and put it up somewhere by the end of this week for
inclusion in Blueberry.

I used Sigil[1], a Free/Open Source tool to create the EPUB file.

Thanks,

I made a (very) little survey:
- the Alice in wonderland (with Illustrations) is 1.7 MB in size
- other epub books I found, probably text only, lies in between 100 to 300 K
- Sdenka_Salas_-_The_XO_Laptop_in_the_Classroom.pdf is 5.6 MB

- I added a spreadsheet made out of pootle latest statistics of today

Question 1: what could be a reasonable size to add to journal = 50 MB?
Question 2: one book for a selection of languages (10) and few more in
english? Does make sense?

Hi
Another consideration is the reading age of the books. This tip I found useful:
You can use the grammar checker of MS Word to find the Flesch-Kincaid reading
age of a text by just pasting a few paragraphs of the text into Word.

5. The Spanish-language version of Sdenka Z. Salas Pilco's guide to
using Sugar in the classroom is available on the wiki (Please see

This is a wonderful resource. Is it available for localizing into other

From Sean...
At launch time we can have a wiki page explaining how to find and load an

Could we also add it to the Help Activity included with Sugar and the online
