Presentation to Students

2012-05-08 Thread Mark Wilson
Esteemed list,

I have a non technical request for information.

I have been asked to help create a 10 – 15 minute presentation for a talk to a
group of IT students in the UK.

I have some thoughts on what I would say given the brief below, but was
wondering what others might cover:

I would very much like someone representing GSE to present at the event about
the GSE view of System z in the IT industry, importance of System z and large
systems thinking.

Has anyone ever seen a session like this before?

Would you be willing to shed any thoughts, comments or even copies of slides we
could crib for such a session?
Regards,
Mark

GSE UK -- Re-Scheduled GSE Large Systems Meeting - 1st May 2012 - IBM Southbank

2012-03-20 Thread Mark Wilson
All,

I am delighted to announce that the re-scedheuled Large Systems meeting
will take place at IBM Southbank on the 1st May 2012.

Full details can be found at: http://lsx.gse.org.uk/future.html

I would like to thank IBM in particular Roger Fowler for all of his
efforts in securing the venue and funding for the event.

I fully understand that we are all busy in our work personal lives and
getting to these events can be challenging at times. However, myself and
Roger spend a lot of our own time organising these events and we were both
particularly disappointed with the response to the last event, which
ultimately led to it being cancelled.

So with the above in mind I would like to solicit your feedback on:

* Why did you not register for the last event?
* What items would you like to see on future agenda's (Working Groups or
Annual Conference)?
* How many working group meetings should we have a year, outside of the
Annual conference?
* How would you feel about not having any working group meetings during
the year and only meet at the annual conference?
* Do you have any other relevant feedback for the LSG Team?
* Would you supply an email address for any of your colleges who we can
add to the distribution list for future meeting please?

Based on your feedback I will make a decision on the benefits of holding
future working group meetings and the contents of the agenda.

Look forward to seeing some of you in Southbank.

Regards,
Mark

I cannot help, with this question but you will probably get a better answer
 on the TCP/IP list:

In general regarding questions involving IP platforms on z Series, you are
 correct.

However, in this case, assuming that what is said in the only reference manual
for OSA features - excluding ICC, Open Systems Adapter-Express Customer¹s
Guide and Reference, SA22-7935-10, under OSA support for Link Aggregation
(IEEE 802.3ad)[1], Mark looks to have had the best and only answer there is.

Of course, it may be that what Mark describes is not Link Aggregation in
which case he needs to be clearer.

If cost is not an issue and you really want to have a single tool that handles
all platforms, you should probably give SCLM a skip.

 Subject: production library control options

Before I start with vendors, etc. I was going to get a sense from you folks
about the various options for handling check-in, check-out, promotion, etc. of
various production/custom objects like JCL, COBOL SOURCE, PROCs, COPYBOOKS,
JAVA parts, WSDLs, and maybe other things on the USS side of the mainframe.

We have all this stuff plus we have PEOPLECODE we should probably be
managing/controlling and we have some custom software on AIX in a
development/maintenance tool called ENVISION (for our Datatel/Colleague
footprint). We could treat the vendor stuff as separate I figure if we have
 to.

We have a lot of locally developed mainframe CICS and BATCH COBOL code with
and without DB2. Plus CICS based webservice programs that create files on the
USS side of the mainframe. We have DOC TEMPLATES, etc.
also. And as mentioned, Peoplesoft HRMS (Oracle, non-mainframe) and
 Datatel/Colleague accounting system on AIX.

 So...

I am not sure I care what platform the repository of all this stuff is
located on, but whatever tool we get, it needs to handle a lot of
different things. Mainframe, AIX, ORACLE, DB2, etc. etc. And
hopefully, have one interface to manage check-in, check-out, and promotion to
 production processes.

We have no check-in, check-out, promotion automation in place now on the
mainframe side for our local COBOL/CICS/DB2 stuff. Not sure what is going on
in Peoplesoft since it is not in production yet, still in
 development/roll-out.

We are going to have to phase in whatever we get, but I would like to have one
place for all this stuff to be. And start with a tool that has the potential
 to do it all.

Maybe it is just too much to really expect of one tool.

Thanks I advance for any suggestions on this.

UK Seminar on Software Hardware Pricing

2010-05-17 Thread Mark Wilson
Hi,

Just wondering if anyone had to to any of the previous seminars?

Was it worthwhile?

Kind Regards,

Mark

Negotiating mainframe software and hardware contracts

Arcati¹s annual seminar on mainframe pricing and contract negotiation takes
place on 28th June 2010 at the Premier Inn Touchbase Centre, London
Heathrow. As always, the principal speaker is Barry Graham, an
internationally recognised authority on mainframe pricing issues. Working
with Barry, users with as few as 600 MIPS and as much as 100,000 MIPS have
signed contracts saving up to 30% of their expected spend.

This year Barry will be joined by David Wilson, independent consultant and
former IBM senior executive for System z Software in North East Europe, who
will be focusing on what users should do to maximise the benefits of their
current mainframe installations.

Sessions at the seminar include:
* Putting software costs in context
* New pricing models and future costs
* Negotiating an IBM ESSO or ELA contract
* Maximising the benefit of mainframes
* Hardware pricing update

The programme covers pricing for all z10 Enterprise and Business Class
systems, and also includes discussion of Passport Advantage, Processor Value
Units, and their effect on software price/performance.

For full details, go to http://www.arcati.com/mmevent10.

JES3

2009-10-28 Thread Mark Wilson
Hi,

Bit of a JES3 question.

Yesterday we had a developer who ended up submitting thousands of batch jobs
through a looping CICS transaction. This ended up filling all our JES3 job
numbers and eventually locking up JES3 on all the systems in our JESPLEX.

I have been trying to think of preventative measures to stop this from
happening again and haven¹t really been able to come up with anything to
date.

Would anyone know of a way to prevent this in the future apart from
changing the developer :)..

TCPIP config on z/OS 1.7 ADCD

2009-06-08 Thread Mark Wilson
Hi,

Ignoring the ³It¹s not supported² issues

I have a problem with zOS 1.7 and TCPIP..

I need to re-build the image from a backup of our ADCD system on our z890 to
perform a set of tests for a customer.

I am having an issue configuring TCPIP and was looking for some words of
wisdom. Our IP setup has changed this we last used this system and need to
make some changes!

I need to configure the IP stack as follows:

HOME address of: 192.168.150.1
Default Gateway of: 192.168.150.254
Subnet mask of: 255.255.255.0

TCPIP starts fine and there are error messages.

My initial question is do I need to configure the OMPROUTE STC? This system
is for internal use only and the 192.168.150.1 IP address is a valid address
on our network.

I have configure the OSA ICC side of the OSA and that works fine.

Subsequent questions are what would you expect to specify for the GATEWAY
DEFAULTNET statements...

As you can probably guess TCPIP is not one of my strong subjects

Any other hints or tips would be gratefully appreciated..

Regards

Mark

PDSMAN Replacement

2009-05-21 Thread Mark Wilson
Hi,

I have the task of removing CA-PDSMAN from two of our systems.

We currently use the following functions:

* PDSMAN Library Space Reuse facility
* Dynamic BLDL Facility
* Remote Data Compare

I believe I can convert my PDS¹s to PDS/e¹s to negate the need for the Space
Reuse facility.

The Dynamic BLDL function causes me a little concern. I have inherited a
situation where we have one massive load library that contains all batch
online application programs. All batch jobs and online systems have either a
JOBLIB or STEPLIB DD Statement that references this one library. Many years
ago (well before my time) the techies turned off this PDSMAN feature and had
very severe system performance issues for online and batch applications,
resulting in this feature being re-enabled. I was think of splitting the
library, perhaps by application to reduce the search time for none
application code.

The remote Data Compare is used in batch to compare PDS¹s on the QA
Production systems. A checksum is generated for each PDS and then compared.
If a difference is found a WTO is posted (picked up by automation) that
triggers a check of the libraries.

Does anyone have any experience of replacing these functions and have any
ideas of how to replace and any advice on the process?

Regards

Mark

Re: Numeric TSO Userids

2008-07-23 Thread Mark Wilson
All,

From the research I have done I agree with Walt in that it¹s a TSO
restriction.

If you logon (Full screen mode) and enter a numeric Userid you get the not
valid message, press F1 and there is the message from TSO.

Hence, my thinking I may be able to get at the field in a TSO EXIT and
bypass the numeric check.

The fact that ACF2 supports it means it can be done and from what I am
seeing there are no issues with MVS commands, INTRDR, etc.

Looks like I go back to the manuals to see if I can figure this out.

It never occurred to us that you might have 7 digit Userids when we
created ACF2. That, it works, is a surprise to me. I guess that by
bypassing UADS, nobody checks -- but RACF obviously does.

Interesting, Barry. RACF doesn't check, and fully supports numeric user
IDs. It has to be a TSO/E restriction, and I'm pretty sure that the
standard TSO/E logon command parsing (and full-screen validation) will
reject a numeric user ID, so I always figured it was done with logon
exits and/or replacement of the logon command when another security
 product does allow it.

Re: Numeric TSO Userids

2008-07-23 Thread Mark Wilson
Kees,

I cannot name names as they are still here :).

I cannot change the numeric Users as the bussiness apps (none TSO) have it
hard coded to support only numeric users.

I have a work around which is two userids with password sync using RACF
RACLINK. But this means changing Multsess to prefix the logon to TSO.

Really looking for a way to support numeric TSO logon.

If you did already prefix the userid with an Alpha character, can't you
definitely change the userid to that prefixed value? It won't make any

New System Build

2007-12-27 Thread Mark Wilson
List,

This question relates to migrating from a Flex server with no external tape
or external disk to a new z9 + external DS6000 disk. We have no tape units
installed on the z9 and zVM is not installed the flex box.

We wish to migrate the zOS systems and data currently in use to the new z9
environment.

For simplicity sake imagine it is a one pack zOS system we need to move;
once we can ipl this we are in business to do more.

How might you do this, our thinking went like:

1. Use new z/OS starter system - not possible since we have no external tape
to restore it from

2. Connect new server to the existing disk or old server to the new disk
systems - not possible, the old system has only internal disk and the new
disk is FICON and cannot be connected to the old processor.

So this leaves us with

3. Load and customise zVM via the z9 HMC using DVD's thus having a zVM and
CMS environment and somehow dump the old system and FTP it across to the
new zVM CMS system running on the z9

This is where the questions arise and looking for some help or ideas as to
how to make this work or if not possible.

We see the steps as:

We believe we can build a Stand Alone (SA) DFDSS pgm in card image
form (BUILDSA) on the old system and FTP this across to a CMS user.
This user should be able to receive this card image as a CMS file
and punch it to the virtual reader.
We could then IPL from the reader on this zVM virtual machine
This then creates a IPL'd SA DFDSS environment

This last and final part is the bit we are struggling with. We can create a
DFDSS full volume dump of the OnePak System to DISK and FTP it to the
zVM/CMS system on the z9.

What I am struggling with is how to get the as input to the DFDSS SA program
from the zVM/CMS environment?

Is this a complete non starter as a process OR if possible; how would it be
done?

Any details of the process and commands that should be used to achieve this
would be well appreciated.

Any help gratefully received.

Regards

New System Build (Part II)

2007-12-27 Thread Mark Wilson
All,

Thanks for the suggestions regarding FlexCUB and MFNetDisk; but this does
not answer my original question.

If I have an IPL'd Stand Alone system running on the New z9 and zVM/CMS is
installed; can I take a Full volume dump on zOS; ftp it to zVM/CMS; save the
file and then use this file as input to the Stand Alone Restore process? If
so how?

When I ftp the sequential dataset to zVM/CMS that contains the DFDSS dump, I
know that I use the FTP STRUCTURE keyword, do I need to consider any other
parameters?

What format should the file be on zVM/CMS?

How do I point the Stand Alone Restore process at the file that (hopefully)
now exists in zVM/CMS?

Regards

zFS Performance - Working as designed?

2006-09-08 Thread Mark Wilson
Hi,

I am in the process of building a Production zOS 1.7 system.

I have converted my HFS File Systems to zFS's and all looks OK...

Apart from at start-up time of the zFS address space.

I am getting a delay of approximately 2-3minutes when zFS starts.

I am getting the following message:

BPXP007E STARTING PHYSICAL FILE SYSTEM ZFS IN ADDRESS SPACE ZFS

60 seconds later I get:

IOEZ00055I zFS kernel: initialization is complete

Does anyone else suffer from this delay?

Is this normal behaviour?

The BPXP007E messages suggests contacting the support centre; but I thought I
would try the list first!

Any help gratefully appreciated.

Kind Regards

IPL VIPA Issues

2006-08-03 Thread Mark Wilson
Hi,

We had a major incident at the weekend on one of our LPARS.

After the normal scheduled re-IPL of the LPAR we could not connect using the
VIPA, but could use the physical addresses that relate to the OSA ports.

Reloading the TCP/IP stack didn't fix the problem and eventually we had to
close TCP/IP and inactivate the SNA major nodes (that use the OSA) to enable
the OSA chps to be varied OFF/ON.

This fixed the problem.

We have no indication of any error - either in the syslog or TCPIP stc and
there were no hardware errors on the HMC.

I've searched IBM's database, but without any real info to go on, this has not
provided any clues.

Has anyone seen anything like this before?

Kind Regards

Mark Wilson

VSE Version of XMIT Receive

2006-07-24 Thread Mark Wilson
Hi,

I use TSO XMIT and RECEIVE for moving data between various zOS systems and
packaging software.

I now need to do the same for some VSE LIBR files and VSE is a very dark art as
far as my skill set is concerned.

Anyone have any ideas how I may go about this in the VSE world?

Any help greatly appreciated.

CTC's VTAM

2006-07-06 Thread Mark Wilson
Hi,

I am in the process of migrating from a PC Server 500 to a flex laptop.

The system runs VM; VSE OS/390 (all versions very much unsupported).

We currently have a CTC connection between VSE OS/390 that uses the
token ring card as the transport.

When I move the system the token ring will disappear and I will be using
two Flex defined CTC's.

What I am after is the VTAM definitions for each end of the CTC's (VSE
OS390) and what the CDRM definitions should look like.

Has anyone got any ideas?

Kind Regards

IBM Session Manager AKA Tubes

2006-06-14 Thread Mark Wilson
Hi,

I am doing some customisation on the above and have an issue that I have not
been able to resolve.

I have a bunch of users who only have 1 session defined (PRODCICS), when they
signon to session manager I have managed to sign then on automatically using a
signon script and the AUTOSELECT facility.

What I cannot workout is when the users type CSF LOGOFF I want them to logoff
Session Manager once they have exited CICS. I dont want them to go to the
Session Manager menu.

Does anybody know how to do this?

Suggestions on a postcard please.

RMF Data RMF Spreadsheet Reporter

2006-04-21 Thread Mark Wilson
Hi,

I am just starting to get to grips with the RMF Spreadsheet Reporter.

I need to do some analysis of some historical data that was created on a zOS
1.4 system on my current zOS 1.6 system.

However, the RMF Post Processor is complaining about differing levels of Code
data.

Is their a way to transform the zOS 1.4 data into something that RMFPP can
process?

Any help gratefully received.

Re: Racf Reports

2005-11-11 Thread Mark Wilson
Alan,

Unfortunately, not what Mark asked for.

He needs a list of Userids each expiry date.

SETR will only show the system defaults at Userid creation time. These
can be overridden of altered.

Mark needs to run a report against the RACF database and list all the
Userids and the fields he wants.

UK GSE Conference, Stratford ------ Storage Stream Added ------ 4th 5th October 2005 - UPDATED Storage Stream Agenda

2005-09-22 Thread Mark Wilson
This year's annual GSE conference, which includes streams on Large Systems,
Enterprise Security, Websphere MQ, IMS, DB2, CICS, Network Management and
Software Asset Management as well as several hands-on master classes, will
take place on Tuesday 4th Wednesday 5th October 2005 at the Stratford upon
Avon Moat House Hotel in the UK.

The organising committee is pleased to announce the addition of a Storage
Management stream to the agenda.

Full conference details of the conference can be found at:
http://www.gse.org.uk/tyc/ http://www.gse.org.uk/tyc/

The Storage Management stream agenda is as follows:

Session
Title
Abstract
Speaker

JB
The IBM TotalStorage Strategy
This session is an overview of IBM storage solutions for Infrastructure
Simplification, Business Continuity, and Information LifeCycle Management.
The primary emphasis is on zOS environments, but solutions for environments
of heterogeneous platforms will be included. Topics include storage
consolidation, storage virtualization, automated management,
high-availability, disaster recovery, and information lifecycle management.

Jeff Barckley

JC
IBM DS8000 Overview
The DS8000 family provides enterprise class feature and function in the
highest performance storage system available in the world today. With a
pSeries heart, the DS8000 is able to take advantage of the performance and
expandability of the Power5 engine. The utilization of the Power5 LPAR
capability opens up an entire new sphere of functions for a storage
controller. The DS8000 can attach to all IBM eServers as well as most
competitive systems. This session will cover the technology, capabilities
and features and functions of this enterprise class storage system.
Curtis Neal

JD
Tape Market Update, and Preview of New IBM Tape Announcements
The Tape market continues to grow, and the latest market share numbers from
IDC show IBM as the industry leader. This presentation will review the IBM
tape product portfolio behind this success, and update you on this year's
announcements so far: LTO3, dual robotics and zOS/VTS support for the IBM
3584 Ultrascalable Library, and improved Virtual Tape Server functionality.
It will also preview the exciting IBM tape announcements planned for 4Q
2005, which include the next generation IBM 3592 Enterprise Tape Drive, and
Virtual Tape for Open Systems.
Peter McNamara

JE
Enhance the Value of your Virtual Tape Library with Productivity and
Disaster Recovery Procedures
This presentation covers utilities that eliminate 'recall wait delays' for
production jobs that need datasets migrated to back end tapes of Virtual
Tape Libraries (VTL). Also covered are disaster recovery utilities that
allow users to maximize their return on investment in their VTL. Virtual
Data Recovery allows users to direct vault bound tape data into the VTL and
then automatically creates duplicate copies and stacks them on native high
density cartridges which reduce the number of native tape drives and media
for DR. Also discussed are solutions to reduce vaulted media for full
volume and incremental backups for disaster recovery.
Michael Weintraub of Open Tech Systems

JF
Managing Storage with the IBM TotalStorage Productivity Center (TPC)
Management of traditional and virtualized Storage environments has become an
extremely complex task. Attend this session and learn how the IBM
TotalStorage Productivity Center helps reduce the effort of managing complex
infrastructures. In this session, we will cover the basics of disk
management, SAN management, data management and replication management.
Scott Drummond

JG
IBM Business Continuance Solutions
In this session we will review the three main aspects of business
continuance: high-availability, continuous operations, and disaster
recovery. 50% of this session will be spent discussing IBM technologies
and products that provide solution capabilities, and 50% of of the time will
be spent discussing best-practices, rules-of-thumb in solution design,
common tradeoffs between business objectives and cost objectives, and
commmon mistakes that are made in planning disaster recovery strategies.
Jeff Barckley

JH
IBM DS6000 Overview
The DS6000 provides enterprise class feature and function in a mid-tier
sized storage system. Holding almost five terabytes of disk in a 3U rack
mounted package, with expansion capabilities to near 70 terabytes while
providing enterprise class feature and function, the DS6000 fills a wide
range of needs. In addition to the abilitity to attach to all IBM eServer
platforms, it can also be connected to a wide range of non-IBM servers.
This session will cover the technology, capabilities and features and
functions of this enterprise class storage system.
Curtis Neal

JJ
What's New in SAN Hardware and Management
In this session we will review the IBM SAN Portfolio offerings - low end
switches, midrange switches and high end directors. We will also look at
SAN to SAN interconnectivity

Migration to RMM from Zara

2005-08-23 Thread Mark Wilson
Hi,

I am in the process of migrating a system from Zara to DFSMSrmm on a zOS 1.4
system.

I have a question re HSM and ARCTVEXT.

We are currently running the Zara version of ARCTVEXT and understand that
when we go to RMM in Production I will no longer need the exit as the
interface is now handled by the EDGTVEXT interface.

What I need to understand is what do I do whilst I am running Zara RMM in
parallel?

Do I need a:

* ARCTVEXT router exit to call the Zara ARCTVEXT and then RMM
ARCTEVEXT; if required I would only need the RMM version whilst in parallel?
* Just the Zara ARCTVEXT and RMM will be updated via the EDGTVEXT
interface?
*   Or something completely different?

Any help gratefully received.

Kind Regards
Mark Wilson

RMM HSM Question

2005-05-24 Thread Mark Wilson
Hello listers,

I have the following software stack:

  z/OS 1.4

  DFSMS/hsm

  DFSMS/rmm

We currently use HSM to do full incremental volume backups on a daily
basis.

We are looking at changing some of our hardware with a view to exploiting
3592's.

Can I automatically (I can do most of the application stuff with JCL) stack
cartridges to a near full capacity using DFSMS/rmm and or HSM.

Is this possible?

If so how?

Kind Regards
