I wonder if parameters like the TAPEUTILIZATION and the

For the disaster situation, VDR would be updating HSM to correct the volser and
label information. It's a can process they do, so you just need the time for
it to run. We have not tried this yet since we have a replicated VTL. The VDR
is the plan B if we lose both primary and replicated recovery sites and we
are still learning.

Hi All,

I'm reading some tcpip document about resolver.. I'm curious what system will
do if I don't configure the resolver settings explicitly.

According to the IBM book library, if I don't specify the resolver process in
the BPXPRMxx, the system will start up the resolver address apce with name of
'RESOLVER' but without global tcpip data settings. The z/OS will use the
applicable searching order for finding TCPIP.DATA.

Now comes out the question, what's the 'applicable searching order'?

Thanks!

 Hallo To All,

I am trying to track down a problem of a missing dataset.  The dsn
was used by a STC however for some unexplainable reason it
disappeared.  In the STC the dsn is DISP=SHR.  I checked all the
 SMF records -TYPE 17, 18, 61, 62, 63, 64, 65, 67, 68, 136, 138
139- but there is no record of it having been deleted.  My suspicion
is HSM.  I checked the ACTIVITY logs for 2 weeks however there is no
trace of the dsn being deleted i.e. ACTION=DELETED or ACTION=SCRATCH
or ACTON=EXPIRED.  According to the MANAGEMENT CLASS which has the
 following expiration attributes:
 Expiration Attributes

   Expire after Days Non-usage  . : 540
   Expire after Date/Days . . . . : NOLIMIT
   Retention Limit  . . . . . . . : 0

My understanding is that even though the dsn could be expired after
540 days, since there is a NOLIMIT, this would override the Expire
after Days Non-usage of 540 days.  Please correct me if my
understanding is skewered.  Also, could any one suggest where else I
could look for the cause of the missing dsn?

Thanks in advance for your help.

I daresay even simpler, if you have a z/OS image that can connect to the
Internet, would be to obtain an SMP/E Client Certificate from
ShopzSeries, then set up and submit a RECEIVE ORDER job that could be
run whenever. For the first run you could specify CONTENT(ALL) to get
everything available for the target zone(s) you specify. If you
haven't received maintenance in a while, you might need to set up
spill datasets for SMPPTS. You might also need to allocate and mount
a large ZFS and point the SMPWKDIR DD statement at it.

Hi,

1) Instead of copying your IODF cluster. You can even use your existing IODF
and Just IPL from the address of the new COD sysres volume, but point
LOADPARM at your normal IODF volume.

2) Or else you can define a new Cluster at the target volume and copy the
existing IODF cluster from the source using the load module CBDMGHCP. You
can google it to find the sample JCL for CBDMGHCP.

If the datasets are to remain in HSM, you may not need to recall
them at all. Once the SETSYS ML2 units are changed, either the RECYCLE or
FREEVOL commands should move the data to DASD.

If you want the datasets on primary volumes, you will need to recall
them but you will also need to change other SETSYS options to prevent
Secondary Space Management from putting data on new ML2 volumes.

Are the parameter that I change these:

Does that mean that the migration still occurs, except it goes to disk?
 Does
it also mean that I might need to increase the migration volumes to support

I would argue it depends. Most of our ZFS file systems are in
support of z/OS and other program products. In our installation, they
are all mounted READ only. No problem doing physical dump/restore for
those. For us they are on the SYSRES, so they are part of the weekly
systems DASD backup, since they are static.

For the few active RDWR file systems, we run logical dumps of those
daily, and they are NOT on the SYSRES.

123 extents, so VSAM? If a CI is full and an insert takes place, a CI
split can occur. If The insert happens to fall at just the right
point in that CI, and all the records go into the new CI. The insert
is then tried on the new CI, so another CI split happens. Repeats
until it runs out of space or hits maximum extents. Just had one 2
weeks ago on our site.

Might try a hex file dump utility to verify this on the original data
set. Logical print would just show the user records.

Reread the guide it then says to move it(which it already was in sys1.iplparm)

Since last spring, I've ratcheted down the group capacity for our 4

today after capping had cut in, I raised it to 18 and then to 19. I
expected it to take at least some wall time for the 4-hour average to
catch up, but in reality, RMF III shows WLM Capping still in effect.
It's now lunch time and we seem to be meeting our workload. I guess I
really don't fully understand how the 4-hour average is determined.

The other thing I've noticed in this exercise these past few months,
is that, whatever number I have the Softcap set at (say n=16), SCRT
reports n+1 (17). I haven't pursued this curiosity as yet.

USS automount and migration

automation check for global mirror

2010-03-30 Thread Michael Wickman
We are just getting global mirror up and running here and I was wondering what
others were doing along the lines of verifying global mirror session is still
in active and ok or the verification when you do the B to D flash copy for
the DRE (and all the pause, suspend, and resume steps that is a part of this
process)? I can think of rexx jobs to parse the output of various queries for
some type of automated checking, but was curious what others did (or did not)
do.

Also is anyone using the D volumes as some type of a point in time backup on
a scheduled bases when those volumes are not used for the disaster recovery

Hello,

The person who installed our z/OS 1.11 ServerPac did not combine the
ROOT,
AAOPROOT, NETVHFS and XML OMVS zFS data sets into a combined ($VERSION)
ROOT
(as I clearly, or so I thought at the time, asked him to do). So now I'm
stuck trying to figure out how I can allocated a new, larger $VERSION
ROOT
and then copy the contents of these 4 zFS to it.

I've tried formatting a new zFS and then doing a IDCAMS REPRO from the
old
ROOT but that failed. I tried formatting a new zFS and then mounting
the
old root at '/temp' and the new ROOT at '/Service' then issued a shell
command:

cp -R /temp/* /Service

that failed saying that the new, larger ROOT ran out of space!

I'm wondering if anyone would be so kind as to point out how zFS data
sets
can be expanded and copied for cloning. I've looked at some of the
documentation but I still don't understand how to do it.

HFS data sets were no problem but these zFS data sets seem to require
somethning special to do a simple expansion and/or cloning.

TIA

There is a list more specialised in matters relating to the IP component
of
z/OS Communications Server. This is the IBMTCP-L list. You can subscribe
as
follows:

For IBMTCP-L subscribe / signoff / archive access instructions,
send email to lists...@vm.marist.edu with the message: INFO IBMTCP-L

One way to discover which ports are in use is to check the output of the

NETSTAT ALLCONN command. This, of course, shows only a snapshot but
might be sufficient for you if it corresponds to a time when all your
servers
are active.

You could probably construct a REXX clist which parses the output and
produces the report you really want.

Note that you should consider how you should report those port numbers
associated with an all zeros IP address, INADDR_ANY, and those qualified
by a
specific IP address.

If you are really keen, you could invest in setting up SNMP, manager
(client)
and agent (server), in order to extract the same information from the
MIB you
will find defined in Appendix B of the z/OS Communications Server IP
System
Administrator's Commands manual. Check the tables in the IbmMvsTcp and
IbmMvsUdp parts of the MIB. I think you'll find traffic counts - and
lots more! -
 there.

that
have
been configured with the PORT statement in the TCP/IP PROFILE. Note
that
this excludes all ports defined by PORTRANGE, or for which the RESERVED

I know what ports we explicitly reserved in the profile and it would be

Any suggestions?

Subject: [IBM-MAIN] Control HSM Pri/SEC migration from batch job

Does anyone have a REXX or other BATCH utility one can use to set DFHSM
primary and secondary migration times to eg: Now Plus 2 Minutes. I am

trying to schedule HSM migrations based on my scheduler rather than
fixed
times in the HSM SETSYS. Basically the fixed times in ARCCMD00 may not
correspond to my schedule when there are processing problems etc etc
etc.
My basic idea it to execute a batch REXX which creates HSM commands like

HSEND SETSYS PRIMARYSPMGMTSTART(1148 1155) where the start time is
current system clock plus sum minutes. Someone must have done this
before.

You might also need a resource group to put a small max if the job is a

maybe this is a real dumb question but

We are running a ADCD based system (around 60 MIPS) and need to run a

One of our jobs (a real big java program) is consuming so much CPU

The answer is in WLM. There should be a Service Class with the lowest
possible goal, probably with a Discretionary Goal. Then there should be
Classification Rules that direct jobs to that Service Class, probably by
jobclass. Select that jobclass for the job, if you are allowed to, OR
reset the jobclass before is starts OR reset the Service Class of the
running job under SDSF.

Subject: [IBM-MAIN] changing management class on about 1 datasets

Hi list,

I checked the documentation and the archives and either what I want to
do isn't available or I missed it, so please bear with me.

Is there some way to change the management class of a number of SMS
managed datasets (roughly 10,000 so I don't really want to IDCAMS ALTER
all of them)? My situation is that before I got here, the decision was
made to use the same management class for test and production datasets.
This class has never expire set on it. I want to create a new
management class for the test datasets that has an expiration date so
that since the developers don't clean up after themselves, I can.
However, I have about 10K test datasets that still have the production
mgmt class assigned to them. The vast majority of these datasets are on
ML2 tapes and I would like there to be some way to tell SMS to assign
the new mgmt class to all these datasets so they automatically get
migrated to the bit bucket. Some of the test datasets are over 10 years
old and the developers have agreed that there should be an automatic
purge of them (the datasets, not the developers...).

From what I've gathered, the new mgmt class will only apply to new
datasets or the old ones if they get migrated or recalled, but I can't
mass change these old datasets while they are at rest.

TIA for any help you can provide.

Several times I have ordered PTF's (for example for DB2), over Internet

After I was unable to install, as some PREREQ were missing etc etc , I

Somebody knows about his tool ?
Can we get this somehow ?

ftping of DFDSS logical dataset dumps

2007-02-02 Thread Michael Wickman
Greetings. Has anyone played with taking the output of DFDSS logical
dataset backups and FTP'ed them off the mainframe and onto a network lan
location. We have an application that wants to take several backups
during the day and have them for disaster recovery. Right now our
backups on tape only gets shipped offsite twice a day, but if we can
trust the lan drive, they have a data replication process that would
have the data offsite without the tape handling. We will be testing to
see if the 8 GB ftp can be done in the various windows for each backup.
I was just wondering if anyone else has tried this?

Re: SEZATCP - Steplib or LNKLST?

2006-06-02 Thread Michael Wickman
We are z/os 1.4. No steplib in tcpip, and only sezaload in linklist.

 [EMAIL PROTECTED] 06/02/06 2:35 PM
Hi List - I have a question on how other shops have their TCPIP.SEZATCP

allocated.

Recently I applied 3 PTFs (UQ95225, UQ95175, and UQ92269 respectively)
to
fix a problem with the CICS CSKL listener abending. Over night the
test
CICS regions recycled, loading the new EZACIC02(and other) load modules

from SEZATCP. The Foundation server that we use as a front end would
not
connect up to the listener afterwards, and after backing out the
changes
and recycling the CICS regions, it functioned fine.

In doing some research, I noted that SEZATCP was in the TCPIP Steplib,
and
in doing some more research in looking at the example TCPIPROC, it did
not
have SEZATCP in the steplib. Furthermore, the default LNKLST that we
received with z/OS 1.4, it only had SEZALOAD in the LNKLST.

I am thinking the problem is that the TCPIP address space has one copy
of
EZACIC02, and the CICS region has a different one, and therefore they
are
not working together.

So I am wondering how others have their TCPIP libraries set up.

Does anyone or everyone steplib to SEZATCP, or shouldn't this be done?

Does the TCPIP stack need SEZATCP at all? If so, should SEZATCP be in
the
LNKLST? Does everyone else have only SEZALOAD in the LNKLST?

TIA for all all those who respond.

Re: Auto-FTP

2006-01-20 Thread Michael Wickman
WE also use jes2ftp and second all that Jim mentions. We put the pdfs
into a HFS and let the users view them through SMB.

 [EMAIL PROTECTED] 01/20/06 6:23 AM
Does z/OS have a way to automatically FTP reports from JES to a
destination host?

YOu might look at a product called JES2FTP from www.casisoft.com which
does
take JES2 reports, converts them to PDF's and FTP's them off to a place
of
choosing. Back a while ago, I had a user requirement to post 300+
mainframe
DYL280 reports to widows web server. So they trained a windows person
to
download the reports (IND$FILE) to a PC manually convert them to a PDF,
and
manually FTP them to the windows machine. Two hours later, he was
barely
into it. The statistican asked us for a better way and we added a last
step
onto his batch job and he would create the reports and also do the
transfer. The kid went onto another PC project. I believe there is a
way to
run it outside of batch using some form of WRITER but I am not
postive.

They also have JES2Mail to attach them to an e-mail. There is just out
a free JES2Mail-Lite which replaces your z/OS SMTP process for
sending
out e-mails and makes the idea of attaching files far, far, easier than
one
would need to do using SMTP. I am told with the Lite client you can
get
support for a very small fee but is not necessary. Not to plug these
folks,
but the cost is reasonable and support is wonderful. Propose a new
feature
and it most often comes very quickly.
