MSGID only places the ID in the message.

In the TSO PROFILE have you tried NOWTPMSG
NOWTPMSG - SPECIFIES THE USER DOES NOT WISH TO RECEIVE WRITE TO

I have not tested it but it may do what you want.

Subject: How to suppress Message in REXX App

Cross Posting to IBM Main and TSO-REXX

I have a Rexx process that issues the HLIST command. I have been successful in
trapping the output from the HLIST but have an issue when the message

ARC0138I is issued.

I have tried turning off all of the TSO PROF functions (MSGID, INTERCOM,
etc)
I have tried turning off message for that section of the code MSG('OFF')

Any yet it keeps getting produced so the user has to keep hitting enter until
they are cleared.

This message can be overwhelming if my user requests 100's of datasets that do
not have an MCDS entry.

Does anyone know if this message can be suppressed from a TSO session? IF so,
suggestions?

Thanks

Just a note to let everyone know I'll be retiring at the end of this month
(5/31/2012). I've been with IBM for 43+ years (plus a couple of summers in
college) and I've enjoyed my career immensely. I've especially enjoyed being
able to help people use the DFSORT/ICETOOL functions I developed, over many
years, in new and interesting ways.

Once I retire, I won't be posting solutions any more since I won't have access
to a mainframe to test them, and I don't like posting untested solutions. I
may lurk a bit or I may not.

I'm looking forward to retirement, but I'll also miss this list. I'm happy to
say that others on the DFSORT Team will continue to contribute.

Thanks to everyone for giving me the chance to earn a living all these years
doing something that was a lot of fun for me.

Long live the mainframe, IBM, z/OS, DFSORT and ICETOOL!

Hi Scott,

We converted from CA Endevor to SCLM back in July 2011. After the initial
learning, about a month or two, we have not seen any problems.

If this is your first source control system there will be a large learning
curve. However, in the end you will have less errors more free time to be more
productive.

To your question are there any got Chas - tons. I would suggest that you
contract with IBM or an OEM vendor to help set up you initial system. They
will help you over the bumps.

Good luck.

My question is does anyone have exposure to SCLM and are there any gotchas?

That'd be branding. Not clueless; indicates that it's the System z version of
something. Seems pretty clear and simple to me.

And it'd be z/Unix if it were done that way, because it's software. Hardware:
no slash (z900, z990, z9, zEnterprise); software: slash (z/OS, z/VM, z/VSE,
z/Architecture - yes, the architecture is software, go figure).

But yeah, it's confusing. IBM should have a TLA Czar, and an ETLA Czar

G'Day,

Can I override a condition code so as to force it to a ? For example the
job-step executes successfully and puts out a COND CODE=0002. The job
continues on to the next step which is what we want. The reason I need a
instead of a 0002 is because I get paged because the operator sees a 0002.
I tried the following by using IDCAMS:
//STEPCOND EXEC PGM=IDCAMS //SYSPRINT DD SYSOUT=* //SYSIN DD *
  IF MAXCC=0002 -
  THEN -
  DO -
  SET MAXCC=0 -
  END
//*

However this did not force a on the previous step. Is there a way I can
add the IDCAMS IF-THEN-DO logic in the step which is giving me the headache?
Or is there a way of forcing a on that step. Here is what the (headache)
step is doing:

//PRINTDS   EXEC PGM=PRTDS, // PARM=('DDNAME(INPDS)', // 'SEA(.) REP(X''40'')',
//'SYSOUT(X)') //INPDS   DD   DSN=SYS2..INFO.CONFIG,DISP=SHR //SYSPRINT DD
SYSOUT=*
//*

If any of the files ends up with no records written to it is it possible,
within the SORT statements, to write out a single record with a message? For
example NO RECORDS FOR THIS FILE when this condition is found? If the
TRAILER statement is used to do this in some manner I would not want a trailer

Subject: TRX Replacement

Hi,

We're running TRX from OES Inc., and we're looking for alternatives.

TRX provides allocation and i/o services for the TSO/ISPF environment. TRX
allows us to avoid maintaining logon procs with hard-coded dataset names or
clists/execs to dynamically allocate TSO/ISPF datasets, by providing a
dialogue/database to describe individual user/application dataset requirements.
TRX also provides performance benefits by dynamically caching frequently-used
member and streamlined i/o processing for ISPF datasets.

Is anyone aware of a potential replacement for TRX? I'm aware of ALTLIB/LIBDEF
but (1 it's not compatible with our existing infrastructure, (2 it's going to
require coding exec's for each of our vendor and internal products and (3 it
won't provide the performance benefits of TRX.

Thanks,

Dennis Schaffer

2010-08-06 Thread Stocker, Herman
Thanks for the ideas.

1. IMS is taken down once a month for maintenance and the compress of the
library is done at this time.
2. The person who said that it would not be a program not found was correct it
is a load failure.
We have not had any load failures, so a compress has not been done.
3. I must have missed this in the original post there were multiple PDS that
were hit on different volumes
4. Logrec did not show any problems
5. We have regenerated the modules from the Endevor source so we are hole
again we are looking for the how now.
6. Endevor has taken over the IDRC record. The date is not keep there on
Endevor generated modules

Thank you Bill I will pass your suggestion along to the security people.

Where what to do next - Load modules missing from PDS

2010-08-05 Thread Stocker, Herman
G'day,

We have had a mystery here. On Wednesday last week all programs were in the
PDS. On Thursday there were 7 programs missing. The 7 programs belong to the
same development group, and no other group has any thing missing. Compress is
done once a month when IMS is down, if not IMS regions abend all over the place
with programs not found, this has not happened.

We are an Endevor shop and Endevor and a very small number of people have
access other then read to the data sets.

Endevor shows no deletes, The source is showing that the modules have not been
generated since 2008 2009.

SMF shows no access of update except for Endevor.

RACF log shows the same as SMF.

I'm at a lost as to where to go next.

All help is greatly appreciate.

Thank you for you fast response.

To answer the why needed question:
On occasion security has stated that access has been given only later to find
out that the incorrect access was granted or not granted at all. Causing jobs
to fail and time to be lost, therefore the user wants away to check security.

We are trying to move away from CA-PDSMAN. One feature that our few

commonly edits.

Has anyone else moved away from PDSMAN and how did you handle that feature?

Is there REXX exec out there that will save a list of commonly edited files

over different TSO sessions?

I am attempting to solve a problem I have with some special files that get
used to drive some work under z/OS.

So I thought the best thing to do is write the REXX code to run under
Windows. So when I execute the code, REXX comes back and says:

Error 13 running fully qualified path and file name, line 1: Invalid
character in program

Error 13.1 Invalid character in program ('ff'X)

[Where fully qualified path and file name is the actual fully qualified
Window's file name]

I can not find any doc for Error 13 (I have the manual for Regina REXX
printed and as a PDF). And I'm not seeing any odd characters in this file
(editing it with NOTEPAD).

Can anyone give me a clue as to where these errors are documented (I've been
to sourceforge, no joy. No joy with http://www.rexxla.org/ either).

Even better, what would cause this to think there is an X'FF' byte in this
record (the following is actually the first several records)?

/*

Read CONFIG files for QC and insert today's date as needed.

This initial area is to define all the things that must be

set up for the rest of the exec to work. In particular the

names of files and the handle to associate them with.

Consider taking your CSV file as input to a sort copy, use the PARSE option
of INREC or OUTREC to reformat your data to a flat file with fixed length
records. Then you're good to go.

(This is DFSORT; not sure if SyncSort has that, but I'm sure we'll hear...)

The way I do this is to take excel and put it into a table in WORD. Then
convert the word doc to a format I want on the MF and then save as a TXT
file. Then up load to the minframe.

If you have NSF/DSF in place or can use the ISPF WS Client, then you could
edit the txt file on your PC using ISPF.

They would like a product that would copy (archive the current load module

I realize this is a really open ended question. We completed our 1.8 to
1.10 upgrade in June, with no known problems. Everything seems to be
running fine. However, I have various people(mostly developers)
occasionally complaining that they think the system is slower since
the upgrade. Of course, the upgrade gets blamed for everything. By
slower, the are referring to their batch jobs, those that do a lot of I/O.

Interestingly, several people, who do not work in the same area(and most
likely do not talk to each other), asked if file buffering has changed
somehow with the upgrade. I tell them, not that I am aware of, and ask them
for specifics to research, and in most cases I compare the jobs running
before and after the upgrade, and the EXCPs all seem to be inline.

So, all I can say is that there is this gut feeling that something isn't
quite right, but can't put a finger on it.

Has anyone else noticed anything, or have idea's on what to look for?

_
Dave Jousma

I can remember that as late as 1.4 that I had to place the blksize=32760 on

On another list someone found some product doc that still mentioned
having the largest blocksize first in a concatenation.
While trying to reassure the person I realized how little I actually

 1. How long ago did this requirement disappear?

ISTR this restriction--and many others--disappeared with the first release

Racf And SAS problem

2009-06-25 Thread Stocker, Herman
G'day,

I have a SAS job that I run without any problems. However, when I had a
co-worker run it he has been getting errors.

First he got error when starting the job:

ICH408I USER(IMSSB ) GROUP(@UNIXAPP) NAME(BARKEY, STEVE ) 609
 /u/imssb CL(DIRSRCH ) FID(01E3E2D6D4F0F90016270003)
 INSUFFICIENT AUTHORITY TO CHDIR
 ACCESS INTENT(--X) ACCESS ALLOWED(OTHER ---)
 EFFECTIVE UID(007096) EFFECTIVE GID(007000)

This caused the job to fail.

This was corrected by deleting the imssb directory in lower case and
defining it in upper case - IMSSB.

How the job will run to the end of the SAS step and gets the error:
ICH408I USER(IMSSB ) GROUP(@UNIXAPP) NAME(BARKEY, STEVE ) 330
  /u/IMSSB CL(DIRSRCH ) FID(01E3E2D6D4F0F90016270003)
  INSUFFICIENT AUTHORITY TO CHDIR
  ACCESS INTENT(--X) ACCESS ALLOWED(OTHER ---)
  EFFECTIVE UID(007096) EFFECTIVE GID(007000)

Note that the /u/IMSSB/ is in upper case this was required to allow SAS to
start executing. At the time of the error SAS has created the report and
the CC is 0 for the step.

Our security people have not been able to come up with any reason for this
error therefore, they can not correct it.

Anyone have any suggestions as to why we are getting this RACF error?

Thank you.

Regards,
Herman Stocker

The message should be reasonably self-explanatory to those who understands
UNIX access control, and if you have such persons at your shop I suggest
contating them for assistance. Alternatively, I would hope that the SAS
folks could help you.

But in a nutshell, either /, /u, or /u/IMSBB has the wrong permissions or
the wrong ownership (probably permissions). UNIX users need eXecute
authority to traverse directories, and your user is neither the owner of the
directory in question, nor is any of his groups the owning group for the
directory in question, and so he is using the permissions for other (sort
of like UACC in RACF profiles). You need to find that directory, and either
change its ownership, or change its permission bits to grant eXecute to
other, or connect the user to the right group that owns the directory, or
create an ACL (access list) on that directory that grants the user or one of
his groups eXecute acess.

The UNIX ls command can tell you the permissions of each of those
directories. Or there's an AUDITID tool on the UNIX Tools and Toys web page
that can perhaps tell you directly based on that FID value. I would guess
it's the IMSBB directory that's setup incorrectly, though. You probably
want it to have permissions 755 (Read/Write/eXecute for owner, R-X for
owning group, R-X for other), which the UNIX chmod command can set for
you.

For any extended discussion of how this all works (UNIX and file security
not SAS specifically), the MVS-OE mailing list is probably a better place.

Yes, the only problem with IEHPROGM is that you have to use the Vol keyword,
and know where the data set is.

You can't use the Catalog to find the file.

In Jol, the syntax of the Rename instruction is:

   Rename old-dsname new-dsname [ALIAS]
 [VOL volume UNIT unit]  ;

Examples

1. Rename 'sys1.proclib(TestProg)' (newprog);

2. Rename 'Test.data.set1' 'Old.Test.data';

3. Rename 'Dept1.*.asm' Dept2.*.asm';

Subject: Light Weight Printing from Development z/OS 1.8 to HP Laser Jets

Hi all and Happy New Year.

I'd like to setup a facility whereby I can print directly from JES2 to an HP
Laser Jet type printer without dedicating a printer, buying a printer, or
spending time I don't have in INFOPRINT jail. What do you do for z/OS
printing in a development context?

The requirement is to be able to print small listings locally and
conveniently. The difference between today, where we FTP the listing to a PC
and print, and tomorrow, is that I want the carriage control characters to
be honored. I define small as less than 5000 lines per report and maybe 5
reports per day.

I've spent several lovely hours cruising the INFOPRINT website and getting
reacquainted with PSF, AFP, and their cousins. Most of this technology
qualifies as gross overkill for my needs. I did not see anything directly on
point that could be considered lightweight.

Is there an easy way to tell Jes2 about a TCPIP connected printer and to
have the printer respond to basic CC commands? No fancy forms or checks to
be printed, just short reports.

Thanks for your ideas, comments, and grand one liners.
Edward Long

I like it FB LRECL 80 so I can see it on terminal screen without having to

TSO Logon Screen problem - Nomail Nonotices

2008-11-24 Thread Stocker, Herman
G'day List,

I am having a problem with the logon screen's Nomail and Nonotice.

Since we moved to 1.9 when ever some users logon the Nomail Nonotice is
selected. If the S is deleted every thing works correctly until the next
logon then the S is back.

I can not find out where it is being selected since it does not occur for
everyone. Nor dose it seem to mater the logon proc that is used.

I appreciate any help you give me. Thank you.

Stupid question perhaps... but do any of these users logon via session

Subject: COBOL abbreviated IF message IGYPS2048-S

Hello all,

I'd appreciate some help interpreting COBOL.

A programmer was updating a program which contained the following:

IF WC-FUNC (SUB) = (X OR Z)
 AND (WC-AMTUSE (SUB) + WC-AMT-PENDING (SUB)) 0
GO TO G100-FIND-CREDIT-X.

and the compiler spit out:
IGYPS2048-S An invalid abbreviated relation condition was found. The
statement was discarded.

The programmer's first issue was that this program compiled clean back in
2006.

Our research discovered APAR PK27765 which says: The Enterprise COBOL
compiler did not correctly diagnose
an incorrect IF statement. and The Enterprise COBOL is changed to
correctly diagnose an abbreviated IF statement missing a required logical
operator with message IGYPS2048-S. The date on this APAR was late 2006.

My interpretation is that the COBOL IF statement was incorrect in 2006, but
the compiler did not correctly flag it, and that error has now been fixed.

The programmer's second issue became - so what's wrong with the IF
statement anyway?

I'm kind of stuck on that one. I'd appreciate any feedback.

No Source for load modules not linkedited since 1980-90's

2008-10-10 Thread Stocker, Herman
We have a large number of modules that have link dates in the 80's and 90's
(still running, can that be done on windows and Unix platform?). We want to
reverse the modules to be able to go to LE and maybe even make changes.

Does any one know of any vendors and/or products on the market that can be
used to reverse engineer these modules - in COBOL.

I have suggested the disassembler but the development people were not happy
with the output, Cobol people do not like assembler, go figure:-) they are
not assembler programmers and the disassembled code was unreadable to them.

Thank you.

Hi,

We have an Endevor controlled PDS that I copied old backup members into
from
an old version of Endevor. Since the members are not know by Endevor
anymore they will not be deleted. All the members begin with a X'FE' as
it's first character.

Would anyone have a utility that can be given a hex member name to delete?
Or any ideas as to how to delete these unwanted members?

Thank you.

It is too bad that they only give the option to print the older ones. It
would be nice to see a table of contents before having to print the hole

A little step backwards.

Hi!
Just in case if you've not noticed.
Xephon stopped sending printed issues and it's just pdf format such that
each subscriber can download and print it if you like.

But...they have've also changed their pricing too for new and existing
customers.

Check the web site.

Re: FTP from z/VM to z/OS JES Spool

2008-04-04 Thread Stocker, Herman
I believe that the JES reader is 80 characters. Can you ftp to a file then
use IEBGENR to place it into the spool?

Regards,
Herman Stocker

I am attempting to FTP a file from z/VM which I extracted from the z/VM
Spool (PRT) to the z/OS JES Spool. Here are my ftp statements from a code
snippet in my code:

queue id
queue quote site filetype=jes
queue mode b
queue type e
queue quote site lrecl=254
queue put temp_file
queue dir
queue quit

ftp host (exit

My problem is that the quote site lrecl=254 is being overridden by the put
of the file which is setting it to an LRECL=80 thus:

site filetype=jes
200 SITE command was accepted
Command:
MODE b
200 Data transfer mode is Block
Command:
TYPE e
200 Representation type is Ebcdic NonPrint
Command:
site lrecl=254
200 SITE command was accepted
Command:
SITE VARrecfm
200 SITE command was accepted
PORT 172,21,246,100,8,186
200 Port request OK.
STOR temp.file
125 Sending Job to JES internal reader FIXrecfm 80
250-It is known to JES as JOB10347
250 Transfer completed (data was truncated)

Does anyone have any suggestions on how to overcome this?

Any Utility that will allow correction of a corroupt library

2008-03-14 Thread Stocker, Herman
G'day,

I have a problem that I hope someone has come across before and has or knows
of a utility to program that will help me out.

I have a corrupt IMS Referral library and it seems to have been corrupted
for a long time. I have no good back ups of it. It has over 14,000 members
and looking at it there seems to be a very large number that are NG.

I am thing that if I can read the first record of each member and compare it
to the member name I will be able to delete all the bad members. Then it
will be up to the development team to add any missing members.

TIA.

Re: Any Utility that will allow correction of a corroupt library

2008-03-14 Thread Stocker, Herman
Thanks for the help.

I think it was corrupted with a compress share operation or two people/jobs
doing a copy. this could of happened any number of times since there are so
many members that have been damaged.

I am not able to compress or copy it. I am having trouble using superc to
locate the good members.

I'll Try the PDS command with Verify, after I get it downloaded and
installed.

Thanks again.

Any idea how it got corrupted in the first place ??? I had a PDS get
reblocked a few weeks ago and that essentially corrupted the PDS. If you
have some members corrupted and some not, this might be the same issue.
IEBCOPY it to a NEW PDS using DCB parameters with larger block sizes on both
input and output and see if you recover the bad ones. You might have to keep
trying multiples of LRECL to get a combination that works 100%.

Can anyone point me to the actual government documents (CMS and DOD)
pertaining to the security requirement for unattended (15 minutes)
connections.
There are two interpretations here:
1) kick the user completely out (CICS TSO)
2) require the user to enter a (Secure Serve Validated) password to
continue.

The first may be difficult/expensive machine/software wise.
The second is monstrously disruptive to the session user.
Have these issues been addressed with IBM - CICS/TSO?

My VTAM guy tells me idle LU's are also a concern.
My concern is productivity of 4 or 5 hundred TSO users and several
thousand CICS users.

--unsnip
Down around the Futures Exchange (CBOT), we used a product called TPX,
though I forget the vendor's name. After 15 minutes, we disconnected him
from all sessions; after 60 minutes, we terminated the sessions.

HLASM calling E/Cobol Response time problem

2007-05-22 Thread Stocker, Herman
G'day list,

We are having a response problem with an E/Cobol module that has just being
converted from COBII. It is called from an HLASM module not using LE.

Before the conversion the checkpoint were being taken at 20 seconds ( 500
deletes to the data base ( IMS ). Initial run took that to a checkpoint
every 20 minutes.

We added PREINIT to the JCL this brought the checkpoint time down to 5
minutes.

We have been contact with our local IBM support staff, but I was hopping
that someone would be able to give us some insight.

Thank you.

SPACE=(CYL,(4000,4000),RLSE) and received an E37-00 Extend failed 04034379.

Suppose we licensed a COBOL compiler for one system; would we be violating
license restrictions to run the compiles on that one system but ship the
resulting object code out to other systems?

Specifically thinking of a situation where developers submit their compiles
using NJE, and the compile proc's JCL uses DEST=(node, userid) to send the
results back to the submitter?

I'm sure this is technologically feasible, my question is now that most of
us have LE enabled as part of our systems, we no longer license the COBOL
run-times, therefore is it legal to do it this way?

Re: SDSF Question - Selection of members to be displayed in the d iffe rent panels

2005-07-02 Thread Stocker, Herman
Thanks to all who responded.

The answer that solved my problem was PREFIX=** this gave me the selection
of jobs by the OWNER that I want to see.

The Select command I had not seen before. This look like it will be a
winner saving me time and energy. Thank you Skip.

Thank you all.

SDSF Question - Selection of members to be displayed in the diffe rent panels

2005-06-30 Thread Stocker, Herman
HI,

In SDSF I have set as:
PREFIX=*  DEST=(ALL)  OWNER=HERMAN  SORT=End-Date//D End-Time//D  SYSNAME=
I get a list of job owned by HERMAN in the ST display.

How I want to see what is in the hold queue so I go to the H display
panel; however, not all the jobs are displayed, ( only the jobs with a
prefix of HERMAN are displayed ).

If I change the set the prefix to a job name and level the owner the display
is empty. Not until I have set the owner to blank are any of the jobs
displayed.

This also occurs in the output display O

Can any one point me to the reason for this behavior?

Thank you.

Re: Synsort

2005-06-17 Thread Stocker, Herman
The last time I checked SYNCSORAT did not have their manuals on line. They
send a CD with your order, Have you contacted their Support to request a
new CD?

Cobol II and COMP5

2005-05-12 Thread Stocker, Herman
Hi,

I have been asked to check around and see if there is any known
patch/subroutine/exit that will allow a cobol 2 compiled program to use a
comp5 field. This can be either free or a $ item. They are looking at a
short time work around that they can use until we get to LE and E/Cobol.

Thank you for your assistance.
