Looks like the culprit was IE6. Thanks everyone.

According to the following article, IE6 can only download 2 GB files, and
IE7 only 4 GB.

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/298618

-=-=-=-=-
Symptom: When you attempt to download a file from the Internet by using
Hypertext Transfer Protocol (HTTP) in Microsoft Internet Explorer, you may
find that the download does not complete. As a result, you cannot download
the file.

Cause: This behavior can occur if you try to download a file that is larger
than 2 gigabytes (GB) in Internet Explorer 6 or is larger than 4 GB in
Internet Explorer 7.

Note This download limit has been removed in Internet Explorer 8. Therefore,
you should not experience this behavior in Internet Explorer 8.

Or, of course, Firefox or other browsers

I always use download director if possible. I've never had a failure yet.

z/OS V1R11 Library unzip problem

2010-03-30 Thread Rabbe, Luke
I ordered z/OS 1.11 electronically. I downloaded the following 3 times using
HTTPS.

IBM Online Library: z/OS V1R11 and Software Products DVD Collection, September
2009
Download to your workstation in KITZIP format - (k3t4271n.zip)(5375.0 MB)

The ZIP file ended up being over 1GB on my PC.

My problem is that I'm unable to extract the files using WinZip or WinRAR. I
receive this error:

Cannot open file; it does not appear to be a valid archive.

I don't know if this is because the ZIP file is too large or because it's in a
format that WinZip doesn't recognize.

Has anyone else successfully downloaded and unzipped this collection? Any
suggestions? Or maybe the file really is just corrupt.

The size should be fine. I've done 15GB files with winzip. Be sure to make
sure that the download is binary.

Also, browse it with a hex view like HexEdit. (www.hexedit.com). The first
4 bytes should be x'504b0304' ... The first two bytes are PK in ascii.

If not, the zip file is bad.

2010-03-30 Thread Jousma, David
I know it is wasteful, but I usually order twice. First time electronic
to get the mainframe software, then I order again on 3590 Media, because
then you get all the off platform CD/DVD physical media too. My last
order had 57 images for download/burning, and that was just for TWS and
MQSeries. I realize that I don't have to burn all that media, but the
problem here is finding a place to store even just the images for
possible need later, since the order expires in 14 days or something
like that.

I was in a meeting with IBM at one time, and suggested that they allows
for physical media on electronic download. They thought it was a good
idea, but probably never went any further.

Trouble with physical media, even if it is just 1 CD, is in some states
(USA) you are liable for sales tax on the whole order.

I hesitate to mention something that seems obvious, but
5375.0 MB is WELL over 1GB. Are you getting the whole
file?

Re: z/OS V1R11 Library unzip problem

2010-03-30 Thread Graeme Gibson
Luke, if the file doesn't begin with the two characters PK then it's not
a ZIP file. Also, the last thing in a ZIP file is its central directory
so if you didn't get the whole file then Winzip and other UNZIP programs
won't be able to process it correctly.

In your post you say..

.. Download .. - (k3t4271n.zip)(5375.0 MB)
   -and-
..The ZIP file ended up being over 1GB on my PC

I would have expected you to say: ..over 5GB on my PC so I'd take that a
a strong indication that you only have about the first 20% of the whole
file.

Or maybe you are using Windows XP with a FAT32 disk so you are seeing modulo
2**32
results for the 5 gibibyte file?

See: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/314463

And pay attention to this statement: You cannot create a file larger than
(2^32)-1 bytes
(this is one byte less than 4 GB) on a FAT32 partition.
