Here's the current lineup: The Value of Cloud Computing on System z (just added) The Value and Differentiation of System z The Value of Business Analytics on System z The Value of Linux on System z It's a bit of a stretch to describe these as courses. They're nothing more than thinly disguised IBM marketing materials. Here is a sample question from the so-called course The Value and Differention of System z: True or false? System z is the world’s best server for mixed, complex workloads and large-scale consolidation Guess what answer they want? Here is a clue: if you click False you get this: Good attempt, but the statement is true. System z is the world’s best server for mixed, complex workloads and large-scale consolidation. It uses a faster, 4.2GHz 64-bit z/Architecture processor (an improvement over the z114's 3.8GHz CPUs), and has twice the maximum memory of the z114 at 498GB. And as far as mainframes go, the zBC12 is priced to move, starting at $75,000 - or for lease starting at $1,965 a month. That's roughly half the cost of buying the equivalent computing power in commodity x86 hardware. /quote Roughly half the cost of equivalent x86? Who do they think they're trying to kid? The $75,000 model is going to be the absolute rock-bottom low-end model -- when the z114 was announced they were very coy about exactly what were the specs of the entry level model, but it's probably going to be 1 IFL core, 8GB RAM, and no disk storage. Possibly not even a network adapter. You can get the equivalent x86-64 computing power for well under $5000, and that includes 8-core Xeon processor, 16GB memory, 4TB disk storage, dual hotswap power supply, and dual Gigabit ethernet http://configure.us.dell.com/dellstore/config.aspx?oc=becte4model_id=poweredge-r420c=usl=ens=bsdcs=04 Oh, and the x64 fits in a standard rack and has less than half the power and cooling requirements of the zBC12 (ref: IBM zEnterprise BC12 Technical Guide) http://www.redbooks.ibm.com/redpieces/abstracts/sg248138.html Roger Bowler Hercules the people's mainframe -- For IBM-MAIN subscribe / signoff / archive access instructions, send email to lists...@listserv.ua.edu with the message: INFO IBM-MAIN

If Netview Access Services is doing this you can turn it off in the Maintain User Parameters menu. From the NVAS Application Selection menu, type ADM on the command line and press Enter, then 1 (Maintain User Parameters) and press Enter, then type the name of the application (TSO for example) in the first field and press Enter. More price rises for z/OS products
On Monday IBM announced further price rises for z/OS products: http://www-01.ibm.com/common/ssi/rep_ca/9/877/ENUSZA12-1059/index.html According to this announcement, prices for WebSphere for z/OS as well as sundry Websphere, Tivoli, and DB2 tools will rise by 5% in UK and South Africa, and 3% in the rest of EMEA from January 1, 2013. Meanwhile, my France Telecom mobile phone subscription went down earlier this year from 61 euros a month to 24.90 following the entry of a new competitor (free.fr) into the French mobile phone market: http://www.lemonde.fr/economie/article/2012/01/12/pour-l-autorite-de-regulation-des-telecoms-l-arrivee-de-free-va-reduire-la-marge-des-autres-operateurs_1628621_3234.html Roger Bowler Hercules the people's mainframe -- For IBM-MAIN subscribe / signoff / archive access instructions, send email to lists...@listserv.ua.edu with the message: INFO IBM-MAIN

So far have been unable to source hardware support for these from anyone other than IBM. The EC press release goes on to say If IBM were to breach its commitments, the Commission could impose a fine of up to 10 per cent of IBM's total turnover without having to prove a violation of EU competition rules. That would be quite a hefty fine. IMS and CICS prices to increase by 9% in 2013
Lost in among the excitement of the zEC12 announcement were a couple of other announcements: IBM announced that the price of IMS V9 and V10 will rise by between 7% and 11% from Jan 1, 2013: http://www-01.ibm.com/common/ssi/rep_ca/4/877/ENUSZA12-1054/ZA12-1054.OI.BODY.pdf Similarly, the price of CICS V3 and V4 is to rise by 9% from July 1, 2013: http://www-01.ibm.com/common/ssi/cgi-bin/ssialias?infotype=ANsubtype=CAhtmlfid=897/ENUS312-100appname=USN Strangely, this has not received so much press coverage as the hardware announcement. Re: Rick Fochtman
It's thanks to Rick Fochtman that mainframe enthusiasts can today run MVS at home. In 1999, during the early days of Hercules development, Rick sent me a set of XMIT files containing some unloaded OS/360 libraries (NUCLEUS, LINKLIB, SVCLIB, etc) dating from the early 70s. This provided the motivation to get Hercules working and prove that it was possible to run classic IBM operating systems on a cheap PC. Subsequently it inspired others to do the same with MVS 3.8, which at the time could still be ordered on tape from IBM. So I salute Rick as a pioneer of software archeology.
