Digging back an old one... Hope someone in IBM goes through this.. The 'MSU Actual' field in the CPC Capacity Report.. since I can view them in the panels, it has to be stored in the VSAM files right. In the DSINDEX screen, I can see how far back my RMF data goes to. MSU Actual [AD]
There are lots of ways to solve the MSU actual problem. I think all of the solutions put forward are valid. The question is do you want it dynamic/historical/on demand? Another question is do you want to be able to compare now to last week/month/year? The advantage of a real-time information gatherer that stores the data in a data warehouse like Splunk is you can look at where you are now and where you were, and from that project where you will be. Also, having multiple sources of data put into a common warehouse (are MSU's the only thing you want?) allows the aggregating of data from across those various sources and getting a full picture. The human mind is a wonderful pattern recognition machine, but it works best when all the data is presented in a single chart, or in a side-by-side pair of charts. Ironstream automates the data gathering and forwarding. It also provides a basic set of dashboards that can be built upon or modified. It is not the only solution, but I think it is a pretty good one. RMF III is a separate part of IBM's RMF, writing to its own VSAM files; it does not write SMF records by itself. Especially exploiting the 1 minute interval, it is a powerful tactical tool to find out what happened, while RMF I (SMF 70-79) data is more strategic in nature. Both are invaluable for z/OS systems. Long time ago the decision was made to make Ibm-main a text only offering. Hopefully it's reduced ads,spam and other bad stuff transported as graphics. Yes you can. We capture every 5 minutes. We start the task and produce messages that look like this: +XWZ009I Testing... hlmsu= 38 himsu= 35 hcap= 100 hrmsu=0 +XWZ000I CPC: Local Partition Capping State: +XWZ001I CPC: WLM Capping %: 100 ( WTO Limit: 0 ) +XWZ010I Testing... MVSx :35 We also use automation to capture the messages and send an email when we are projecting capping within the next 15 minutes. Interesting that IronStream is mentioned.
