Re: March 18: Exploring z/OS Container Extensions Live Webcast
Live Webcasts are sometimes prone to technical issues, but fortunately the "Exploring z/OS Container Extensions" virtual Meetup worked well with no apparent difficulties and plenty of great questions. Whether you were able to attend live or not, if you'd like to obtain the video recording and/or presentation charts they are now available for download. Please send me an e-mail with the Subject line "Requesting zCX Presentation Access" to get access. Yesterday IBM announced a new 90 day z/OS Container Extensions trial which should be generally available later this month (March, 2020). For more details please refer to the Meetup presentation as well as the IBM announcement: https://www.ibm.com/downloads/cas/US-ENUS220-102-CA/name/US-ENUS220-102-CA.PDF What this announcement really means is that you can run the z/OS Container Extensions (zCX) for up to 90 days if you don't have Feature Code 0104 installed yet on your IBM z14 (or higher model) machine. zCX is already included with your base z/OS 2.4 license at no additional charge, but IBM has worked out a way to get zCX working for a temporary period without the system feature code. The prerequisite for this trial is the PTF for APAR OA58969, so you can obtain and install that PTF when it's available and then (separately) activate the 90 day trial when you're ready. Of course many machines already have FC 0104 installed since it's not unique to zCX, and in that case you can skip the trial and run zCX as long as you want. If you have other topics you'd like to suggest, I welcome your suggestions. - - - - - - - - - - Timothy Sipples I.T. Re: March 18: Exploring z/OS Container Extensions Live Webcast
Let me add my personal recommendation to this session. I was lucky enough to attend one of Timothy's session in person last year and found the session of great interest and had potential in the organization where I'm currently working. Plus it was good to meet Timothy in person having only seen his comments on the forum before this. It's a shame the current travel makes travel impossible but I would urge people to attend virtually if they can. I copied Tomothy's hyperlink and used Chrome to go to the page and the Attend button did show up in Chrome. My employer must have blockers activated for our IE11 browser, which they prefer us to use. I do see what you saw when I clicked the Attend button, it forces you to sign up with Meetup to attend the meeting. Like you I think I'll pass on this one, don’t need another bunch of emails flowing in, got too many of those already. Too bad, really. That said, it's unclear to me why I should have to sign up and provide personal information to a third party (Meetup - owned by WeWork) in order to be able to use yet another third party (Webex - owned by Cisco) to attend an online presentation by IBM. IBM used to run all this kind of infrastructure itself, and I would be much happier if it had continued to do so. Thanks Ray but I did that and still do not see any red Attend button anywhere on the page. Do we have to sign up and login for the "Meetup" service to see that? I did not sign up yet.
