Skip, To answer your original question, No, prior to v2r1 (and being in distributed mode) there is no way to add an MCS console without an IPL. I also don't know of any system command that will show you that a console device is pinned. Note that any device you've specified in CONSOLxx as a console will be pinned. As for the message, during IODF ACTIVATE (including TEST), you get this message: REASON=0151,CAN NOT DELETE DEVICE DESCTEXT=DEVICE PINNED, ASID = 0001 DEVICE IN USE AS A CONSOLE COMPID=SC1CK While combing the web yesterday, I came across APAR OA33088 (2010) which introduced this message for ACTIVATE TEST. Before that, you would get the bad news only on actual ACTIVATE. Forewarned is just as frustrated. ;-) . . Update on the console saga. Of the three sysplexed SDM (XRC) systems on the CEC in question, one is easily expendable. So I ran IEARELCN on the skinny stepchild to remove 10 offending PINNED consoles. It was pointed out afterwards by a colleague that in a sysplex, removing a console affects all members, so the 10 consoles were now gone from the whole sysplex. Not what I intended, but not a catastrophe. So I forged ahead with IODF ACTIVATE on the expendable system. Then I IPLed it to cement the notion of 'expendable'. At that point all consoles were usable on the IPLed system. After ACTIVATE SOFT on the other members, the consoles are visible but are usable only on the IPLed system. For example, an SMCS console (not affected) looks like this: NAME TYPE STATUS DEFINED MATCHED SMCS INACT *ALL*ALL while a redefined MCS console looks like this: NAME TYPE STATUS DEFINED MATCHED MCS INACT S2 S2 S2 is the IPLed system. At R13, we have to IPL the other systems to get the redefined consoles to work. Now I can get back to R21. . . HSA can be downlevel, of course it's not nice solution, since then your tokens (IODF and HSA) will be out of sync which means no dynamic activation. Another question in the same realm. I find out that a console is PINNED only when actually run ACTIVATE. Does anyone know a standard command that will show the attribute? None of the display commands I've tried show PINNED on a console device. . .
