Re: Tape solutions for mainframe

2021-03-08 Thread Timothy Sipples
Rewinding this discussion a bit, to my knowledge there's only one locally
FICON-attached physical tape solution for z/OS from one vendor that's
still in active development. The current iteration is IBM TS7770+IBM
TS4500+IBM TS1150.

Physical tape is still extremely useful, even more useful than ever.
Physical tape cartridges are comparatively economical, durable, portable,
and expressly designed to be electrically unplugged/disconnected. Physical
tape is really the only practical last line of defense against malware,
ransomware, corruption, and other data destroying events.

For the sake of completeness (I haven't seen anyone mention it yet), I
believe Fujitsu's ETERNUS CS8000 is still at least notionally available
and can support physical tape, including IBM's physical tape.

However, encrypted cloud object storage, typically backed with physical
tape (which usually ends up holding most of the exabytes), is now well
established and quite compelling. A few of the IBM products in this
category include IBM DS8000 Transparent Cloud Tiering, IBM TS7700
Transparent Cloud Tiering, and Cloud Tape Connector for z/OS. Please note
that "cloud" can mean any cloud(s), including your own private cloud. If
you're considering storage-related improvements I suggest you embrace
cloud object storage.

There is also IBM's CTC (Cloud Tape Connection) product. It used to have a
different name until last year, but it also is meant to replace real and

nope, zVT is MTL or ATL.

Also, it's in their manual that the technology is based on BUSTECH. Maybe they
licensed it before or after the EMC purchase.

Ken,

Can you share some details of Visara solutions?
Of course I visited your webpage and read a little bit.
1. You have to products. 5990L and 5990A. What is a difference between
them? Size only?

2. Is it possible to attach external disk storage to extend capacity?
3. You offer sync and async replication. That's clear. However what
about external storage? I understand both 5990 devices should have its
own storage and in fact it can be different type (i.e. disk array ABC in
primary site, disk array EFG in secondary site)

4. Any VISARA software on z/OS side?
5. Scalability. Assuming single box is not enough, can I simply add
another box and it will be seen y z/OS as single MTL?

(disclaimer: I'm not asking for advertisement, I'm just asking for
technical details)

Thanks for the link and after looking it over they even got most of it
correct. EMC never had a MDL-6000 it did have a DLm6000, but now I am being
picky. I remember reading the paper edition of computer world back in the day
(yes, I am that old). Since I was on the trip down memory, I did start looking
for Mainframe articles and found them few and far between (that is if you
discount the article about migrating off). Now maybe I just did not look in the
right place that is always a possibility.

And just for clarity, I do work for Dell Technologies, specifically in
the Mainframe Division and more specifically on the DLm product. And I do want
to avoid unpleasantness.

Re: RES: Tape solutions for mainframe

2021-03-05 Thread Radoslaw Skorupka
I remember what EMC sales guy said when they offered DLm. It was not
long after Bustech was bought.
They claimed it is just Bustech device, however due to EMC interest it
support EMC disk at backend, no tapes, no other vendors disks.
Disclaimers: I'm neither follower nor opponent of EMC or Bustech people.
I have no way to check what part of DLm have roots from Bustech.

However it would make no sense to buy the product (company) just to
issue another product, so I read EMC sales guys words as reasonable.

BTW: What about Sutmyn VTAPE aka CA-VTAPE? Is is still marketed?
Personally I did not like it because it tool CPU cycles and expensive
CKD DASD, however I heard it was somehow enhanced to support IP-attached
NAS for destaging.

Ken,

On this I will need to respectfully disagree, seems I work with this
product every day and this is not accurate. The DLm is 100% evolution of the
BusTech MDL and we see this constantly in the product. Is it different yes,
has it evolved yes, and the evolution is from BusTech MDL. I have worked on
this product from the time it was acquired by EMC now Dell. And another fun
relatively unknow BusTech fact at one time for a short while they were owned by
StorageTek (STK). This happened because BusTech was acquired by Network
Systems Corp who was then acquired by STK. After that the principals of BusTech
were able to buy their company back from STK.

RES: Tape solutions for mainframe

2021-03-04 Thread Bodra - Pessoal
1. IBM TS7700
Real tapes only as VTS backend -

TS7760 has option to do not destage data to real tapes. All data stay in VTS
(as other vendors does).

2. STK/Sun/Oracle VSM
what about T1? Is it still offered?
(I mean new sale, not an upgrade or service)

As I know Oracle is going out of Tape (real or VTS) as warranty or maintenance
agreements ends.

3. EMC DLm (former BusTech)

It is live and well. Product is available for marketing.

4. Interkom Gmbh
(I think it is based on Luminex solution)

Never listen about InterKom.

5. Secureagent

I haven´t details about.

6. Luminex (???)

Its is live and well. Product is available for marketing. They have an FTP
(File Transfer) option called MDI that speed up and make FTP secure. It is
based in their VTL solution. Different from IBM, EMC/DELL and Oracle that uses
own storage, with Luminex you can use virtually any FC or iSCSI storage to be
data repository for Luminex appliance.

7. Others? Fujitsu?

I never listen about Fujitsu to has available a VTS, but Hitachi is partner of
Luminex. Luminex supply VTL appliance and Hitachi supply storage to be used as
repository data for Luminex appliance.
