Re: [Ilugc] Final Year Project, I need some suggestions..
The library will include the following functions. Its me who suggested to do this project. The whole usecase and features of this library has not been listed here. Actually its a drupal emfield module http://drupal.org/project/emfield for CodeIgniter. 1. to generate HTML necessary to display videos. well most of the video are a flash player unless its HTML 5, so i dont this there need a HTML generation to do this all you have to do is just copy the single line you see in the youtube. what will you do for the rest of the video service provider ? I comfortable with echo $this-video-load($url); which automatically identifies the service provider and generate HTML to embed video. 2. to get the thumbnails of a video from various video providers. 3. to get the addition information about video like users who created the video, date of creation, hit rate etc. well I am considering that you say video provider its either one of them at the bottom that you have mentioned. If that is the case its all about making a API call to these websites who provide thumbnail of the image. Well I would say its very simple thing I wouldn't need a external module to do this. Indeed It is not required if your application use single video provider. Imagine the case where your application needs video to be embedded from various video service provider. Each API will has its own set function and parameters it will hard to use, in that case you could use this library as a gateway to API functions. 4. will be able to customize to suit application need like video height, width, color, border etc. All these things that you are specifying are pretty simple for example if i need to set the height i would set that in my styles. Inline styles defined in embedded html will override CSS styles. So i need some suggestions for this. well i would suggest you to do something hard core with the frame work something which solves the real problem like enhancing the ORM (well i am not a code ignitor user so i dont know the flaw is it.). AFAIK CodeIgniter has no ORM concept. Fixing some existing flaws or providing some enhancement would be good idea. I would suggest you one more thing you can talk to the creators of code ignitor if they actually have some plans to enhance if so you can take up that. [Ilugc] Fwd : Is Open Source Software a Race To Zero?
forward message from my friend . Is Open Source Software a Race To Zero? gozunda writes My company is an open source software vendor/developer. We maintain a popular open source project and keep ourselves afloat by producing commercial products derived from or extending the value of the core project. Over time we've seen our business model eroding as other open source projects produce free versions of the same extensions and utilities that are our bread and butter. Something that was worth $5K last year is suddenly worth $0 because the free version is just as good as the paid. This same cycle is obviously having an impact on pure-play commercial software vendors. Is open source ultimately a race to zero? In ten years will there be any cost associated with commodity (non-custom) software? If not, will there still be a 'software industry' as it exists today, or will software simply be a by-product of the operation of other industries? Is that a good thing or a bad thing? As a professional developer, do I need to fear this or feed it? Do you have any answer for these questions ? -- Thanks a lot - http://ubuntuslave.blogspot.com/ ___ To unsubscribe, email [EMAIL PROTECTED] with unsubscribe password address in the subject or body of the message. http://www.ae.iitm.ac.in/mailman/listinfo/ilugc

Re: [Ilugc] [OT] Volunteering - ways and means
/** The sad part is that many students, who in their college days embrace FOSS, loose interest in it. because the foobar company which recruits the students has got nothing to do with FOSS, obviously he/she will loose interest .Most of job related thread appearing in this mailing list are focusing on experienced guys , this shows that you are not going opportunity to newbies so don't raise this statement again :P I would like quote yet another new method i followed in introducting FOSS to my relative who is studying 3rd year in mahendra engg college.. Initially, for the first two days i was introducing him about open source, linux, linux commands, web server, html, php, wiki.. at the end of the second day, i observed, that he dont understand any of those things.. Then i made him use some of the basic linux commands, like ls, cd, etc.. he too practiced it.. This statement sound like you are forcing him to learn Linux ,surely this will not work if he is not interested he cant learn anything . On the third day, i downloaded xxamp stack, and demonstrated how to install.. i patiently made him do all those things.. ALAS.. he doesnt remember the ls and cd commands that he practiced before.. I again taught him those, and linked those commands to some practical situations, like moving to a particular folder to start xampp server etc. Then he learned about how to start xxampp server, .. till now, he did not have any idea of web server.. then i demonstrated, how we can access the webserver from browser as localhost.. dont blame him , this is situation of most of the student .they read just to score marks in examation .our formula for mask is mark=subheadings + diagram + presentation . Mark has got nothing to do with concept .Even the student who scores more 90% dont remember / understand any concepts .Even the staff member who correct our papers forcing us to use the examples/diagram given in the prescribed book . now he could get some idea.. but not fully.. Then on the third day i guided him to create a folder for him under htdocs of xampp folder, and then asked to practice some html tags.. He did all those tags, but he could not remember those tags after some time.. This shows that he is not interested . he was interested in surfing cricket scores.. Suddenly i got an idea.. I asked him Do you want to desing your own IPL site for displaying cricket score? .. he got interested.. and he slowly started emulating the ipl score site.. As usual, the desired layout did not appear.. but he searched through, and started making the site.. Now, i first told how the site should appear, and left some time for him to think.. then i guided him how to achieve that functionality using html.. now he easily learned html, how to link multiple pages and then navigation.. Next, i taught him PHP, on how we can simplify reduntant html pages using server side program.. he then started implementing that.. instead of database, i told him initialise data using arrays.. And at last, i taught him how to install some basic open source softwares like phpbb forum, wordpress etc. I am sure, he might not have understood much of the things obviously , you are dumping too many things on him .how he can learn HTML , php , database in such a short time ? This is the reason why students treat FOSS as a Alien :P . Dont force them to learn foss rather attract them to your side . new to the technological side. But the point i want to note is that theoritical sessions wont help in any way to the students.. They can just know the names, and only if they are interested.. Practical sessions may help a little bit, but one day session may not be much useful.. So, what is the solution to break this deadlock. Ask him whether he is really interested in learning foss . Install a basic Linux distro like ubuntu ,let him use that for a month or two . Later you can teach about Linux command , xxamp server , mailing list ,forms etc Infuse vision among the students staffs.. we have to demonstrate how we can enhance our life (both work and personal) using FOSS.. and how we can improve an existing setup using foss.. Once they get the vision, then the learning automatically happens.. Some of the points are already expressed by me in the past.. My idea is that whatever we plan, we have consider the ground situation.. If you are looking for low volumes, you can try things out at home by purchasing a GSM Modem and by using Kannel Gateway (http://www.kannel.org ). See the SMSCs list here http://kannel.org/compatibility.shtml. After a long struggle i came to know about how to configure kannel sms gateway the official document was very technical contains all the possible configuration details ,i was using my friends Sony ericsson w80i mobile as GSM modem to test this thing , unfortunately that mobile does not supports the AT command to read sms from smsbox . One more problem with kannel is , it generate too many entries in log file , size of bearerbox.log went beyond 10GB because of some file permission problem.Later i managed to make it work properly . i am not in position to proceed furthur with my SMS Travle Guru ( http://sivaji.freehostia.com/project/sms-travel-guru/abstract.txt) project because i dont have GSM modem/mobile phone and i am not in position to buy a gsm modem that support all the AT command ,i will be so thankful if NRCFOSS or CDAM members came forward to sponsor/lend me a GSM modem/mobile phone .you can ping me offline for furthur details .
