I heard that Open source projects has started supporting MariaDB as an
alternate for MySQL. In fact Drupal QA setups were already using it for a
while [1], however i have not seen any good installation/ migration
documentation neither support from hosting providers side. Any thoughts
pertaining to this will be greatly appreciated.

Can this be added to Demo stalls to spread awareness ?

 much
love they have for Tamil. I will continue to post in Tamil lists.

I usually ignore your mails because they are often impatient, immature and
aggressive, this one is not an exception.

FSM is run by a well known person in this list, often recognized for his
FOSS Tamil computing contribution, you can't deny that of course he is a
hero in that context.

I request you not to mess up personal interest with business.

In short you seem to lack the maturity of expressing thougths in a right
way. Your earlier post confirms the same.

There is a trade-off here, you can avoid re-inventing wheel with framework

Re: [Ilugc] Final Year Project, I need some suggestions..

2009-08-05 Thread sivaji j.g
The library will include the following functions.

Its me who suggested to do this project. The whole usecase and features of
this library has not been listed here. Actually its a drupal emfield module
http://drupal.org/project/emfield for CodeIgniter.

  1. to generate HTML necessary to display videos.

well most of the video are a flash player unless its HTML 5, so i dont
this there need a HTML generation to do this all you have to do is
just copy the single line you see in the youtube.

what will you do for the rest of the video service provider ?

I comfortable with echo $this-video-load($url); which automatically
identifies the service provider and generate HTML to embed video.

   2. to get the thumbnails of a video from various video providers.
   3. to get the addition information about video like users who created
 the
video, date of creation, hit rate etc.

well I am considering that you say video provider its either one of
them at the bottom that you have mentioned. If that is the case its
all about making a API call to these websites who provide thumbnail of
the image. Well I would say its very simple thing I wouldn't need a
 external module to do this.

Indeed It is not required if your application use single video provider.
Imagine the case where your application needs video to be embedded from
various video service provider. Each API will has its own set function and
parameters it will hard to use, in that case you could use this library as a
gateway to API functions.

   4. will be able to customize to suit application need like video height,
  width, color, border etc.

All these things that you are specifying are pretty simple for example
if i need to set the height i would set that in my styles.

Inline styles defined in embedded html will override CSS styles.

So i need some suggestions for this.

well i would suggest you to do something hard core with the frame work
something which solves the real problem like enhancing the ORM (well i
am not a code ignitor user so i dont know the flaw is it.).

AFAIK CodeIgniter has no ORM concept.

Fixing some existing flaws or providing some enhancement would be good idea.
I would suggest you one more thing you can talk to the creators of
code ignitor if they actually have some plans to enhance if so you can
 take up that.

Good but not ideal for a student who started PHP hello world program a month
ago.

[1] Start creating small apps which would be useful to you, like a
mini-diary, a blog, a photo album, a contact list, etc.
[2] Run it on your local machine and use it. Try learning more and better
ways to the same and keep your creations evolving.
[3] When you feel you have got enough of exposure, you can start to take
small tasks from people as part-time.
[4] For this, you have to invest in participation and getting to know
people, parallel to your learning process. Join some PHP forums and mailing
 list, answer to
queries, listen to what others say, what others are doing.
[5] Improve your communication. Check this list on how people are asking
 questions, replying questions, etc.
[6] Participate in LUG meets and other UG meetings, get to know people,
 share experiences.

I agree with this.

Also you can start playing around CMS.

Start with joomla then move on to drupal, moodle etc.

Subscribe to web technology based blog and tutorial websites RSS feeds.

All the best.

http://www.regnow.com/softsell/visitor.cgi?affiliate=23579action=sitevendor=12012ref=http://www.guangmingsoft.net/htmlsnapshot/html2image.i386.tar.gz

download this 9MB script, this will convert the content of url to an image

for example running ./html2image www.google.com ./google.png this will
create an image google.png which looks same as google.com web page

Here the sample output which i got for the above command
http://img87.imageshack.us/img87/7183/googleoy8.png

Have a button on your web page saying take a snapshop on clicking the
button send the current url to html2image script via php and get the
snapshot.

1.Your configuration seems to be wrong, make sure that these things

2. Your mobile model number is not in the tested phones list

[Ilugc] Fwd : Is Open Source Software a Race To Zero?

2008-11-25 Thread sivaji j.g
forward message from my friend .

Is Open Source Software a Race To Zero?

gozunda writes My company is an open source software
vendor/developer. We maintain a popular open source project and keep
ourselves afloat by producing commercial products derived from or
extending the value of the core project. Over time we've seen our
business model eroding as other open source projects produce free
versions of the same extensions and utilities that are our bread and
butter. Something that was worth $5K last year is suddenly worth $0
because the free version is just as good as the paid. This same cycle
is obviously having an impact on pure-play commercial software
vendors. Is open source ultimately a race to zero? In ten years will
there be any cost associated with commodity (non-custom) software? If
not, will there still be a 'software industry' as it exists today, or
will software simply be a by-product of the operation of other
industries? Is that a good thing or a bad thing? As a professional
developer, do I need to fear this or feed it?

Do you have any answer for these questions ?

Hi Guys,
There has been floods in the state of Bihar, India and Sahana team has

Information on Sahana Response to Bihar Floods: http://tinyurl.com/5ge8ns

1. Immediate help to Sahana can be provided in terms of Translating
Sahana into Hindi.
Or asking someone you know involved in Hindi translation for any other
projects to contribute.
Tip: Pass it on to the other mailing lists too.

Online Translation Engine available at: [This engine provides a web
interface to translate text into language by just browsing through the
keywords and pasting/typing corresponding text.]

http://translate.sahana.lk/
1. Sign up Activate Account
2. Add Hindi to your language profile first
Login to the Pootle, go to My account, scroll to the bottom of the
page,
click on Change Options, scroll down to My languages and select
Hindi
from the List (to make multiple selections, hold Ctrl-Key pressed
while
selecting), then click on Save changes.

3. Translate by pressing Suggest button after putting the
corresponding text.

The suggestions will be moderated by the admin, which is currently me
for Hindi, and will merge it to the main file.

I have a target to get this done in 3 days.

Any and all help is welcome.

Feel free to contact Ajay Kumar or the Sahana Mailing List regarding this.

My suggestion is to allocate some more space for root partition ,you got
only 4.6GB really its not sufficient .You can resize the partition using
gparted livecd .

Re: [Ilugc] [OT] Volunteering - ways and means

2008-06-19 Thread sivaji j.g
/** The sad part is that many

students, who in their college days embrace FOSS, loose interest in it.

because the foobar company which recruits the students has got nothing to do
with FOSS, obviously he/she will loose interest .Most of job related thread
appearing in this mailing list are focusing on experienced guys , this
shows that you are not going opportunity to newbies so don't raise this
statement again :P

I would like quote yet another new method i followed in introducting FOSS
to
my relative who is studying 3rd year in mahendra engg college..
Initially, for the first two days i was introducing him about open source,
linux, linux commands, web server, html, php, wiki.. at the end of the
second day, i observed, that he dont understand any of those things..

Then i made him use some of the basic linux commands, like ls, cd, etc..
 he
 too practiced it..

This statement sound like you are forcing him to learn Linux ,surely this
will not work if he is not interested he cant learn anything .

On the third day, i downloaded xxamp stack, and demonstrated how to
install.. i patiently made him do all those things.. ALAS.. he doesnt
remember the ls and cd commands that he practiced before..

I again taught him those, and linked those commands to some practical
situations, like moving to a particular folder to start xampp server etc.

Then he learned about how to start xxampp server, .. till now, he did not
have any idea of web server.. then i demonstrated, how we can access the
 webserver from browser as localhost..

dont blame him , this is situation of most of the student .they read just to
score marks in examation .our formula for mask is

  mark=subheadings + diagram + presentation .

Mark has got nothing to do with concept .Even the student who scores more
90% dont remember / understand any concepts .Even the staff member who
correct our papers forcing us to use the examples/diagram given in the
prescribed book .

now he could get some idea.. but not fully..

Then on the third day i guided him to create a folder for him under
htdocs
of xampp folder, and then asked to practice some html tags..

He did all those tags, but he could not remember those tags after some
 time..

This shows that he is not interested .

he was interested in surfing cricket scores..

Suddenly i got an idea.. I asked him Do you want to desing your own IPL
site for displaying cricket score? ..

he got interested.. and he slowly started emulating the ipl score site..

As usual, the desired layout did not appear.. but he searched through, and
 started making the site..

Now, i first told how the site should appear, and left some time for him
to
think.. then i guided him how to achieve that functionality using html..
now he easily learned html, how to link multiple pages and then
navigation..

Next, i taught him PHP, on how we can simplify reduntant html pages using
server side program.. he then started implementing that.. instead of
database, i told him initialise data using arrays..

And at last, i taught him how to install some basic open source softwares
 like phpbb forum, wordpress etc.

I am sure, he might not have understood much of the things

obviously , you are dumping too many things on him .how he can learn HTML ,
php , database in such a short time ? This is the reason why students treat
FOSS as a Alien :P . Dont force them to learn foss rather attract them to
your side .

new to the technological side. But the point i want to note is that
theoritical sessions wont help in any way to the students.. They can just
know the names, and only if they are interested..

Practical sessions may help a little bit, but one day session may not be
 much useful..

So, what is the solution to break this deadlock.

Ask him whether he is really interested in learning foss . Install a basic
Linux distro like ubuntu ,let him use that for a month or two . Later you
can teach about Linux command , xxamp server , mailing list ,forms etc

Infuse vision among the students staffs.. we have to demonstrate how we
can enhance our life (both work and personal) using FOSS.. and how we can
improve an existing setup using foss..
Once they get the vision, then the learning automatically happens..

Some of the points are already expressed by me in the past..

My idea is that whatever we plan, we have consider the ground situation..

 Regards,
 Senthil Raja

So you remember everything you studied in your 3/4 years of engineering

 irrelevant statement :P .
i remember all my favorites subjects because i read them on my own interest
.

He was trying to teach the boy some basics and an initiative,

read that mail carefully , you will understand that the guy is not
interested in learning HTML and PHP .

and not trying to make the-best-in-the-city web developer. You should take
each of them a day to learn and be comfortable with the basics of each, and
the rest of the time you try to apply them and build something, in the
process learn more and correct yourselves of things you got wrong or
couldn't understand. HTML, PHP and Database is not a big deal at all, mean
 the basics.

may be its not a big deal for you ,but for me it took more than three months
to learn all these things myself .

Ask him whether he is really interested in learning foss . Install a basic

Ok, lemme ask you a question. What do you mean by FOSS and learning
FOSS? This is one question is always ask people who speak about FOSS,
learning FOSS, FOSS jobs etc. and most of the time they have a pretty absurd
 definition for them.

well i remember my college staff members , this is what they do , they will
start asking questions , if any student happen to suggest something or ask a
doubt .Even if the students answers correctly he/she will be tapped
somehow .so let me assume that i am tapped in this .

addons to support Tamil font , one among them is padma .Install padma or
something and restart your browser

If you are looking for low volumes, you can try things out at home by

purchasing a GSM Modem and by using Kannel Gateway (http://www.kannel.org
 ).
See the SMSCs list here http://kannel.org/compatibility.shtml.

After a long struggle i came to know about how to configure kannel sms
gateway the official document was very technical contains all the possible
configuration details ,i was using my friends Sony ericsson w80i mobile as
GSM modem to test this thing , unfortunately that mobile does not supports
the AT command to read sms from smsbox . One more problem with kannel is ,
it generate too many entries in log file ,
size of bearerbox.log went beyond 10GB because of some file permission
problem.Later i managed to make it work properly .

i am not in position to proceed furthur with my SMS Travle Guru (
http://sivaji.freehostia.com/project/sms-travel-guru/abstract.txt) project
because i dont have GSM modem/mobile phone and i am not in position to buy a
gsm modem that support all the AT command ,i will be so thankful if NRCFOSS
or CDAM members came forward to sponsor/lend me a GSM modem/mobile phone
.you can ping me offline for furthur details .
