Why not?

Pros:
1. No one searching for help on a particular Win(dows|doze|blows) issue
will have to selectively filter out the ilugc archives.

Cons:
1. None! It is easy to see that it's Micro(soft|shaft|shit) and its
products that are being referred to.
2. None! Operating Systems don't have feelings.

Seems to me Kenneth is preserving signal-to-noise.

There is no fatwa in this regard.

In principle, this is a sensible point of view.

As far as AU-KBC is concerned all the servers are linux - a lot of the
desktops are also linux, but the majority of them are windows. AFAIK it is
left to the individual to choose his/her OS. There are even some MSDOS
machines which control some of the older equipment.

One question which is worth asking in such mixed environments is:
Who helps to manage the machines?

Typically, if you buy a product then you are entitled to support for
that product, so the burden of support for Windows machines *must* be
passed on to the vendor you bought them from (or MicroSoft). It *is*
harmful to FOSS if FOSS developers spend a lot of their time making
such machines work instead of completing their FOSS projects.

Regards,

Kapil.

I am a F/OSS enthusiast. But I most certainly prefer referring to products
by their
right name. After all, Micorsoft is not Lord Voldemort (Pardon the old love
for Harry
Potter) to be called That-Which-Must-Not-Be-Named

If your dislike for Microsoft actually is so high that typing the right name
out hurts,
you should take the pain of shifting all your work to Free Software
machines. How did
we all like it when Tuomov Valkonen(Creator of ion wm) call us lusers (linux
users).

The very fact that you involve yourself in too much of policing of this
mailing list wastes
some time that you can spend constructively in developing the missing links
that construe
this dependency on proprietary products.

I may be wrong in saying that policing is bad. But the phrases M$ Windoze
and Dont

take
more time filtering away than the actually top post that most modern mail

you are entitled to your opinion, but you are also expected to follow list
rules. For example you may be of the opinion that we should drive on the right
side of the road like most of rest of the world - but you are not entitled to
drive on the right side until such a rule comes into place. Top posting
interrupts the thread of discussion and is irritating and also against the
list rules - so I will continue to fight against it.

I certainly agree. Even i don't like windows that much. But I think
instead of doing such things, we can concentrate on a better thing
that is at hand.. Linux.. If we go out and fight with Microsoft or any
other person who thinks high of Windows, we're making a mistake.
There'll be no difference between us and them. We use better Operating
System(s) and we know it. But others may not think so. So we'll be
hurting them in the process of using funny names. Almost all linux
users use linux cuz they've had problems with Windows.. It applies at
least to people i know.. So let us try and educate ppl about linux
instead of cursing microsoft..

Hello everyone ,

seems to be another flame in the making anyway just wanted to
make it clear that . Microsoft Windows( or it being bad) is not
the main reason why we use linux( atleast not me, I have never used
windows). So microsoft is not our agenda, ... as was said in a mail
on the list a month ago, we should talk about FOSS/Linux , rather than
defacing Ms windows.

This is not to suppose that using altered names is defacing. It might
hurt someone's feelings, but mind you it is a common practice on the
web to use altered names to imply sarcasm. So this discussion on
personal conventions/styles seems to be as worthless ( as my reply to
it :-), no hard feelings for anyone !)..

Cheers
Satish
