AFAICt, safety (of _my_ data on _my_ device) and rooting _my_ device
are unrelated. What is probably relevant is having to run binaries
from questionable and unknown (to _me_) source code which has access
to the data and capabalities of my device.

For example, look at the Choota Bheem app on the Play Store. It
wants permissions to make calls - that is right - make calls. I put
the phone on airplane mode before my kids' hijack it (the

to my device than rooting it.

I am no dev; just running purebreed android (currently, gingerbread)

[ilugd] Bulk SMS application

2013-01-17 Thread Niyaz Ahmad
hi,

I need to build a bulk SMS application.

Clarifications first :)
I am not working for any spamming company.

I am working for a large ecommerce company which has a large client base
and to keep them updated, we send about 5 Lakh SMSes per day.
Till now we have been relying on a vendor for this work but now my
management wants this to be done in-house.

Clearly speaking, I have never worked for such an application. I need your
suggestions for the following:

1) Most suitable database for this application. From my experience I know
mySQL is faster than pgSQL. But pgSQL is most robust DBMS. I am open to
other better DBMSes.

2) Messages mobile numbers will be pushed to this SMS application and it
needs to provide delivery status to main application. I need help regarding
basic architecture of such SMS application. It will be built using open
source tools. Please suggest which programming language is most suitable
for this application.

3) Any other suggestions, pointer to relevant docs, etc will be highly
appreciated.

Thanks to you all,

Niyaz

[ilugd] Postfix Postgres Encoding Issue

2011-10-14 Thread Niyaz Ahmad
Hello Friends,

I am facing this serious problem related to encoding.
My Postfix server receives emails in various encoding and I need to save
contents of those emails along with email IDs and subject lines to Postgres.
I am using PHP to fetch emails and save to database.

Postgres is set to UTF-8 default encoding. When it sees text with a
different encoding it gives error about illegal character and my PHP script
dies.

One solution is to expand my PHP to convert different encodings to UTF-8
(there's no very reliable function for this) and the other way possible is
setting Postfix to save/covert all emails UTF-8.

Is it possible to convince/force Postfix to save/convert all mails to UTF-8
and send UTF-encoded mail when fetched by a script.

Thanks..

[ilugd] Request for suggestion for setting up Asterisk based call-center

2011-03-17 Thread Niyaz Ahmad
Hello Friends,

I need your suggestion for the following scenario.

An e-commerce company, largely in tourism, has its own in-house 24x7
customer support facility.
It provides support to its customers through phone and email.

Its a 30-seats call-center, having only in-bound calls.
Presently they are using a Nortel based system which seems aging.
They have a 32-channel Reliance MTNL PRI line (Reliance line is primary).
I don't know about the PRI-Card/Server.
The Nortel system provided a real time monitoring, call bargin and call
recording facilities.
Nortel system also provides detailed report of each call hitting their
lines.
The management demands a report based on these details on daily basis.
Each call center agent uses a Nortel based IP phone through which he/she
receives/mutes/unmutes/transfers calls.
The call center usually receives 5000-6000 calls everyday, which may reach
9000 in peak seasons.

I plan to propose an Asterisk based system for their call center.
I have never implemented/installed Ansterisk based system.

While contemplating Asterisk as a potential candidate, I assume:
1) The company would need to buy a linux supported PRI card (I guess its
called FXO card).
2) Call-center agents can use Soft IP phones on a linux based pc which will
allow call barging/transfer/recording.
3) Asterisk can provide facilities of call barging, call transfer, call
recording and detailed report of each landing call.

I have the following queries:
1) Are my assumptions correct?
2) What hardware (configuration) would be required for this kind of load?
3) Please suggest hardware requirement for call recording separately.
4) Is there any IT company in Delhi that can implement and provide 24x7
support to this
Asterisk based setup.

Thank you all,

Niyaz

[ilugd] problems after usermod abuse

2008-08-21 Thread Niyaz
Hello Friend,

I did a mistake :(

I log into ubuntu using the primary user id 'niyaz' (created during
installation).

I was trying virtualbox and on the first run it told me 'niyaz' is not
in vboxusers group.
well, that revelation striked me quite hardly, i guess.
And i fired:
$ sudo usermod -G vboxusers niyaz

and it transmigrated me to vboxusers.
I lost the sudo power.

In an attempt to rehabilitate 'niyaz'
I booted the system with the Ubuntu live disk,
added 'niyaz ALL=(ALL) ALL' to /etc/sudoers
but it left some challenges for me:

- 'niyaz' can't unlock users-admin (gui tools to manage users) although
users can be added/deleted with useradd/userdel. it exits with error
number 6868.
- similarly 'niyaz' can't unlock services-admin (gui tool to manage
services)
- synaptic package is working fine ('niyaz' is getting authenticated by
it)
- 'niyaz' doesn't have permission to access other auto mounted
partitions.

please suggest me what else i need to do.

Thanks to you all,

I you like the OpenOffice form facilities you can always use them
 with
PostgreSQL or MySQL (or another RDBMS) as the backend. Since
OpenOffice supports RDBMS connectivity, you're not limited to using
 it's features with OO Base.

Friends,

Thank you all for your replies and suggestions.

I spent my Happy Independence Day searching a solution for my DBMS
+frontend problem.
And this is what I find the best.

I shall use mySQL or Postgres as beckend (as suggest by Mr Mani)
and for creating the frontend I shall use Mono + Windows.Forms.
umm... WinForm is just to keep the illusion of those hallucinated.

Now, this venture brings in a/few question/s regarding mono.
ding! i need to start a new thread for the mono queries.

Raj Mathur Sahab,

Its great to know that OO.Base forms can connect to other DBMS.

I would like to know something more about OO.Base:

- Can those OO.Base forms (using mySQL/Postgres as backend) be saved
outside an OO document? I want to open the form only, not the entire OO
interface. It doesn't matter if those forms actually use the OO
infrastructure.

 - Does OO.base allow remote connections to itself? Can it run as a
service like mySQL/Postgres?

Once again, Thanks to all members.
Niyaz

[ilugd] Queries regarding Mono

2008-08-16 Thread Niyaz

Hi again!

Here are the questions I have about Mono:

- Can I compile my mono code in Linux and run the generated executable
in M$ OSes having only the M$.Net runtime/framework/etc. Would i have to
install mono on the M$ systems also to rum Mono:WinForms?

- Can a Mono app run as an portable app on M$ OSes with .NET_framework
or Mono? or is it necessary for a .NET/Mono based app to follow some
particular installation procedure? (Dah! this question has M$.NET stuff)

Thank you,
Niyaz

[ilugd] Queries regarding OpenOffice Base

2008-08-15 Thread Niyaz
Hi Friends,

I am working in an organization that primarily deals with hospitals and
colleges. We are using M$ Excel to keep data related to those
hospitals/institution. Now those sheets have grown in number and size to
trouble the less tech aware seniors.

I have suggest them to go for a proper database system.
Thankfully, they hadn't bought a license for M$ Access and I am hopeful
the licensing cost for the same will give them a little pain.
I want to present OpenOffice Base (OO.Base) as a better alternative to
them.

These are my queries regarding OO.Base:

1) The database should run on a central machine and others will
input/access data from their PC using a small application (Form). Is it
possible with OO.Base?

2) I am also hopeful that i will be asked to develop the forms for this
system. Its possible in OpenOffice to create forms easily. I have only
Linux (Ubuntu Hardy) on my laptop while in my organization they all use
winXP. Will the forms developed in OO.Base on Linux will run in OO.Base
running on winXP?

3) Can I make those forms run independent of OO.Base like a compiled
program? If not, please suggest any solution for this.

4) Is there any other open-source alternative which can satisfy these
requirements?

Thank you all
Niyaz
