Hi,

The July edition of the kernel meetup is on 16th of this month at
11:00 AM. I will be talking about the implementation details of the
malloc suite of functions in glibc. Pankaj Gupta will give an
overview of the various locking mechanisms in the kernel.

[fedora-india] Fedora meetup in Pune?

2017-01-23 Thread Siddhesh Poyarekar
Hi,

I would like to host a Fedora meetup at reserved-bit, the new
hackerspace in Amanora Chambers, Pune. How is 28th Jan for everyone
interested? I don't know what we could talk about yet; I was hoping
to get Fedora booting on the Dragonboard 410c this weekend (or at
least attempt to) but that did not happen. I hope to have some time
during the week for it or at the very least I can talk about the
status of 96boards and Fedora.

If remote sessions are OK then the entire country is your proverbial
oyster. That is, reach out to past and existing women FOSS
contributors across the country (Runa, Sinny, Suparna to name a few
that I personally admire) and ask if they could do a remote session
even if it were 10-minutes long. The big reason to prefer local
speakers is to provide a role model closer home because that makes the
story easier to relate to.

The sequence I would go for in in terms of preference would be:

1. Women Fedora Contributors
2. Women FOSS Contributors
3. Any other fallback you prefer (videos of global Fedora/FOSS
contributors, RH employees, etc.)

I personally don't have contacts in Cummins College, but I know a
couple of professors from MITCOE. I'll try to find their contact
information (I know I've noted it somewhere, just can't remember
where) and introduce them to you. For Cummins I suggest you talk to
Rupali or Soni from the RH Pune office.

I partially agree. The only thing I differ on is the 'taking aside'
bit because of the sheer nature of FOSS communities. By nature,
mistakes in FOSS communities are public, so is the criticism and so is
any praise that comes in as a result of your work. In such a setting,
the important attribute is integrity that coachees can demonstrate by
stepping up and responding to criticism instead of sitting back and
waiting for the fire to burn out. This is more so the case for
someone aspiring to be involved in the Ambassador program. Priyanka
stepped up and the result was that we are making progress in that
thread. I'd like to see Sumantro also step up and clarify and get
everyone involved.

As is evident from this thread, the worst that can happen is
resentment about being left out.

It really seems like only the initial messaging (i.e. the tone and
content of the OP) is where it all went wrong, so there is still scope
to move on and have local contributors who are interested be involved
in fleshing out the details.

Also as an added note, if it's not already the case, please let Fedora
foot the bill for this. In APAC we're much too frugal with the Fedora
budget due to which we end up grossly under-spending every year and
hence getting our budgets reduced every year. It is not that we're
spending less, it is just that Red Hat local offices are footing the
bill for things it shouldn't be. it would be better if the local
offices pitched in only when the Fedora budget is unavailable.

While getting local ambassadors in loop is useful from a logistics
and/or budget perspective, what's more important here is to reach out
to as many *existing* women contributors as possible (and as early as
possible) so that you exhaust all of your options of getting qualified
speakers (local or remote) before you resort to doing it yourself
within Red Hat by reading up the wiki pages.

I can't see how that will work in practice. It surely took me more
than 2 weeks to get myself into the various groups I am currently in,
so actually doing something useful will have to come after that. In
any case, that doesn't solve the issue I pointed out.

That said, please don't misunderstand my objection as an objection to
anybody participating in the community. My point is that people
should be encouraged to participate for the right reasons. That is,
join the community to pitch in, learn and grow and not just gain
credentials as a speaker, that too on the basis of being employed at
the company that is hosting the event.

+1. I believe Red Hat has contacts in Cummins College for example.
They have been active in the django and/or python community in the
past IIRC, so I am sure they will look forward to the event. There
are a number of women teachers in MITCOE who I am sure will be
interested too. I'm sure there are other colleges we can reach out
to.

I personally don't doubt the intent of any organizers and I know such
oversight is not uncommon especially due to the fragmented nature of
communities. I also acknowledge the chicken and egg problem. I only
disagree with the solution, which was to take the easy way out and go
with almost an all-Red Hat lineup without making an attempt to make a
call for participation in a wider and more relevant audience like
fedora-india, GLUG, PLUG, etc. You could even invite speakers to talk
over a video chat, there are a number of ideas that you could come up
with along these lines before thinking of the compromise.

Also, it is not that we never talk about pathways to contribution, in
fact my personal beef is that "Contributing to Fedora" is almost all
we talk about all the time and I'd really like us to move forward from
that :)

Contrary to what my response seems to indicate, I would really like
this to be a Fedora event. For it to qualify to be a Fedora event
however, it needs to be much more transparent than it currently is.

Firstly I want to clarify that I am not talking about the Kolkata
event because there is a formal CfP out on this list and there is not
a lot to complain about there. It would be nice however if you could
link the speaker names to their user pages to know who they are.

So moving on, I have missed the discussions because I am not on those
mailing lists. Likewise, I am sure a lot of women contributors to
Fedora who may be qualified and interested in attending and speaking
at the conference may have missed the conversation completely and may
find themselves excluded. When doing a local chapter of a global
event, it is not sufficient to just reach out to the global lists, one
must reach out locally.

Again, while my question in this context was specifically for the Pune
event it also wanted to pick at the inability of the local ambassadors
to be able to push for a budget when we hardly utilize anything that
is allocated to us anyway. I don't exclude myself from that charge
just because I was unavailable to contribute to it.

However looking at the ticket, the items you need like stickers and
dvds could have been obtained by asking on this list or making a
specific request for it on trac. Those items don't need to be part of
the event budget. Travel subsidy for this event seems excessive given
that I haven't seen it happen outside of premiere events.

I think PJP (pjp AT fedoraproject.org ) can help with DVDs and
stickers if you haven't reached out to him already.

I'm afraid I've been out of loop for a while, but why is it that
ambassadors can't come up with budget for this event? We barely spend
any money in APAC outside of FUDCon and this is a global event with a
local chapter, so I am surprised that we won't have budget for this.

Can we please not market this as a Fedora event? Or if we are, please
make a more serious attempt to involve the community in it. That is,
please try and do the following:

1. Send a 'first class' communication about the event on the mailing
list, not a forwarded snippet of some arbitrary conversation that
happened internally in Red Hat. It took me a while to even understand
what was being talked about from the two emails

2. Make the meeting times public so that if anyone from outside RH
wants to join, then they can. Not a lot actually do in my experience,
but you're part of a larger community so please at least do due
diligence. Also, we don't have kerberos ids in Fedora, so I assume
you're talking about RH internal kerberos ids in the piratepad link[1]
on the wiki page. I don't know why that is important in Fedora

3. Speaking about a topic is not just about content (that anybody can
read a wiki page and deliver) but about presenting an example of a
community member. Apart from some, I could not identify a lot of the
people from the speaker list in the piratepad page as contributors to
Fedora. I also did not see a call for speakers for the event, which
is something you'd want to do if you don't have qualified speakers for
the event. I guess you could bias the selection process in favour of
women since it is a women's day event, but I don't know how women's
day celebrations work so I don't know how that works.

The "convince Flock organizers to include APAC" is the sticky bit IMO
- why does it have to be that way? Like I said, if Flock organizers
don't see value in a session because it's not from NA/EMEA then it is
discriminatory and it should be called out. If they don't see value
in the session because they deem it uninteresting for a general
audience but if APAC thinks it is important that it be present, then
we could fund it. I no longer see the point of earmarking some funds
to support an already fat Flock budget just for the sake of it.

On the "smart stickers" front, nothing more than actual stickers -
creating brand awareness. People going back from a conference with
something to hold on to and perhaps even do something with, ranging
from throwing it in the corner of their stack of swag to sticking it
up in their cubicles (I do that BTW) to putting it in their DVD drives
and giving it a spin.

I don't disagree, which is why I specifically disassociated the
distribution from the direct goal of "even more people will install
and use Fedora". Recipients of these DVDs at conferences are usually
techies who will probably give it a spin to see how it measures
against the latest Ubuntu, Debian, etc. and then maybe use it as an
alternative for a while.

The Freemedia program however is very different in that the recipients
don't fit into this demographic. TBH, I don't know what the average
recipient of DVDs from the Freemedia program looks like and if someone
could define that, then maybe we could get closer to knowing what's
going on there.

If you're referring to DVD giveaways as cheap grace then I have a
different opinion because I don't see DVDs as any kind of grace, much
like I don't see stickers and buttons as any kind of grace. If you
want DVDs to be something more than that, then I think we're on to a
different question and I don't have a more convincing answer for it
other than recipients would find it more useful to get the actual idea
(i.e. DVDs, USB sticks, etc.) than stuff about the idea (stickers,
buttons, etc.).

I believe the reason for this has very little to do with the Freemedia
project or DVD distribution, although I understand why you would want
to raise questions about both initiatives - they seem like things
targeted at the 'less fortunate'. The real reason seems to be to be
the fact that most people who receive this media are more intent on
solving their own problem (build something with it, like their college
assignment, replace the coaster that their neighbour stole, etc.) than
being involved in the project itself in any capacity. A lot of times
they may use it for a project and then completely forget about it -
this was true 13 years ago when I was studying in college and saw
people around me use RHL/Debian for their projects and then forget
what ls did the very next day, so I don't see why that truth won't
prevail today. The idea of software freedom is actually a much harder
sell in these regions than it is in NA/EMEA since the idea of Freedom
itself is not as well appreciated.

In principle I remain not-a-fan of reserving APAC budget for Flock

call Flock a global event and an NA/EMEA event in the same breath) and
if there are technical reasons for it then I don't consider it
worthwhile for the APAC budget to be dipped into unless there is
something that is specifically interesting for our region, such as
i18n/l10n or problems/solutions specific to our region.

What value do generic sleeves add? I don't see the point at all.
Who's going to sit and insert 2000 DVDs into sleeves? It is much much
more convenient to just give the order to the vendor and have them
give us a fully finished product, i.e. DVDs inserted into their
sleeves. Cost should not be that big a concern since it will always
be significantly cheaper than what you would get anywhere else.

[fedora-india] DVD distribution and their impact

On 24 November 2015 at 09:45, sankarshan wrote:
> All these locations receive the DVD and thus roughly 2000 individuals

I personally consider DVDs to be smarter stickers, buttons or flyers,
i.e. promotional media that has digital content. In that context, the
impact of DVDs is similar to impact of stickers: they help improve
brand awareness at conferences and meetups. There is the other aspect
of enabling individuals who may otherwise not have the bandwidth to
download the distirbution and try it themselves. The freemedia
program tries to reach out to such people, but like you, I am not very
convinced about its utility in attracting long term users or
contributors.

That said, there seems to be quite a bit of interest in DVDs (from
conference attendees and consequently, ambassadors) regardless of our
apprehensions and that says something even though we don't quite know
what.

I don't think DVD production is that big a cost that we need to put so
much thought into potentially replacing it with something else. If
there's an alternative that needs evaluation (like a device that
allows people to plug USB sticks in and copy a bootable distribution
copy, that sounds like a nice engineering project), we should bring it
up first, try it and then decide if DVD production is putting cost
pressure on that alternative.

Making card pouches separately is expensive, cumbersome and time
consuming. So either make them or don't. I am inclined towards
making them because they are not very expensive and are nicer to
distribute the DVDs in and transport.

Nobody has volunteered to do this yet. I am unable to take this up
this time and I have documented the process[1] for someone else to
pick up. We printed 2000 workstation DVDs for F22 and we ran out a
bit early, mainly due to FUDCon. I would think the same number is
sufficient. You'll also have to coordinate shipping to Singapore and
Bangalore from Pune, assuming Pune is where the DVDs are delivered.
Also ask Beijing ambassadors if they need some. If they do, you may

Hey all,

This is to remind everyone of the social media marketing plan for FUDCon
2015 where we plan to go viral on Twitter, targeting to have atleast 200
unique tweets and hundreds of re-tweets over a span of one week (*15th
-19th June 2015*).

We already have a list of usable tweets here -
https://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Fudcon/Thunderclap

*How can you help?*

[1] You can start tweeting from this list or create your unique tweets and
post them on twitter over the entire week. The hashtag we have for the
event is *#fudconin*

[2] Keep an eye on the *#fudconin* hashtag for this week and re-tweet the
tweets that is being posted.

Lets try and make the *#fudcon* hashtag trending on twitter by end of the
week.

P.S - We can start tweeting right from the time of viewing this email [?]

Oh, I wasn't referring to the material of the banner, I was referring
to the type of banner, i.e. the vertical one that can be rolled up vs
the kind that could be hung at entrances. The former are likely
expensive but are considered more durable. So making a fudcon pune
2015 banner would be more cost-effective than a standee.

Right, I did not mean to say the opposite. The point was to decide on
the kind of banner, not banners themselves.

[fedora-india] FUDCon banners/standees

2015-05-20 Thread Siddhesh Poyarekar
Hi,

I had a conversation with Sirko on IRC and he pointed out that since a
FUDCon banner will be used just once and then discarded, it might be a
good idea to make it as a cloth banner and not a standee. A cloth
banner can be cut and reused, while a standee may have to just be
discarded. We can make a few generic Fedora project standee banners
instead (we already have a design for those), which we can use in
other events.

Thoughts?

[fedora-india] The new fudcon.in!

2015-05-17 Thread Siddhesh Poyarekar
Hi,

fudcon.in now has a completely new look and more importantly, is brand
new under the hood.

We faced a lot of limitations with the old Drupal 6.x instance that
fudcon.in was running on. Specifically, we found it difficult
(impossible?) to show the speaker bio in talks or any kind of rich
information in various pages. Finding support for Drupal COD 6.x was
next to impossible - the only response we got was "I don't think a lot
of people use COD 6.x anymore".

So a couple of weeks ago we finally bit the bullet and made the move
to Drupal COD 7.x. The move was not easy because the two schemas are
not compatible at all. We could manage to migrate 6.x users to 7.x,
but we had to enter all of the content by hand once again and then
continuously check to make sure that we weren't losing any data.

There are a few breaking changes due to this:

1. Non-accepted talks are no longer published. That is, you can see
your submission if you're logged in, but unless the session is
accepted, others won't be able to see your abstract.

2. The links for sessions have changed. This is because Drupal COD
7.x introduced the concept of namespaces for conferences, putting all
sessions for that conference into a separate namespace. This is great
because it is now possible to seamlessly add conferences to the same
instance and have them coexist.

Please try this website out and let us know if anything is broken. We
will be reaching out to speakers soon to let them know of the new
website and making sure that their experience with editing the
abstract or uploading slides is seamless.

Talks on Containers (Docker,Atomic, etc.), OpenStack and Gluster/Ceph
are on hold because we're making full day tracks out of them[1].
Please wait while one of us gets in touch with you for it - the plan
is for all proposed speakers to get together to plan talks such that
they convey a consistent story for the track.

This is now almost done (phew!). The only remaining action is to
organize the track talks. Kushal and Neependra are on that and we
hope to have new track talk proposals soon. I'll set up a view to
list the accepted sessions for the main track over the weekend.

[fedora-india] Talk selection results for FUDCon Pune 2015

2015-04-16 Thread Siddhesh Poyarekar
Hi,

We finished our talk selection discussion last week and we have now
conveyed our decision to speakers whose talks we have accepted and
also those whose talks we have declined since we could not accommodate
all submissions in the main tracks.

There are a number of additional submissions that fall into one of
these categories:

- They are on a waiting list in case speakers from the accepted talks
are not available
- They align with the Containers, OpenStack/Cloud or Software defined
storage tracks that we decided to host separately at the conference[1]
- They are proposed to be merged with another proposal - these are
primarily workshops where we felt that there was an overlap and that
the workshop could benefit from both submitters working together on
one proposal
- We felt the submission was suitable for a specialized BoF or a
breakout session.

We will try to finish this in a couple of days. Following that we
will publish the list of selected talks and workshops on the fudcon.in
website.

We had a fairly sparsely attended meeting today. The highlights were

* Travel sponsorship meetings have begun, several tickets have been approved
* Talk selection deadline not met, we hope to finish by 14th April now

I have blogged about it along with a dump of the etherpad for meeting
minutes here:

For cases where we really want to know if a speaker's talk was
selected or not before deciding on sponsorship, we have deferred
decision till the deadline for requesting sponsorship, so the question
of clarity does not arise IMO. Also, the deadline for asking for
sponsorship is 30th April and the speaker list will (hopefully) be out
much before that.

Yeah, sorry, that's a limitation in the way we configured the
submission form. I don't know if it would be worthwhile changing it
this late though. I think you could just add FAS names and twitter
handles as comma-separated values. That way if we actually end up
doing something with those values other than showing them (like for
awarding badges to selected speakers), we could parse the commas.

That comes up when the list of selected talks is announced. If you
want your session to be after another selected talk (either by you or
someone else), you can ask for it and we'll try to accommodate that
while preparing the schedule.

Doing it in a VM is a good idea. I would suggest using a Free
alternative like kvm; you have time to learn it :)

Also as a backup it might be a good idea to record a video of your
demonstration so that if it doesn't work during your talk, you have a
fallback.

We don't dictate how you do your presentation. That said, we would be
really happy if you choose Free alternatives wherever you can. Our
focus is the topic of your session and we want that to be about Open

I am not referring to the meeting pads actually, I'm talking about the
main etherpad:

http://piratepad.net/FUDConPune2015

It looks like something that will be better served as a wiki page
where we know who made what changes and can track it much more easily.
The content may get modified during every meeting, but it will rarely
get completely revamped. Also, it's not stuff that we will always
edit live, which is the point of an etherpad.

Anyway, bikeshedding so if you feel strongly about it then we can keep
it in the pad and let you remember to save revision every time ;)

I've raised a ticket[1] for a new logo which Suchakra has picked up.
All other graphics will be derivatives for the logo, so I'll add
tickets for each of those shortly. There's a graphics section on the
etherpad which you can modify to add graphics you think we'll need.

Also, maybe we should move the main etherpad to a wiki page on the
Fedora wiki. I don't have a very good feeling about etherpad
documents that can be edited by anyone without adequate
authentication.

Having ~30 people on conference call is a waste IMO. I believe we

I don't subscribe to the idea of more heads == better in all cases,
regardless of their intentions. Too many cooks spoil the broth, too
many programmers produce more bugs than code, too many planners
produce more plans of plans than actual plans, etc. That said,
announcing meetings on this llist and transcribing them over IRC is
not a bad an idea from the viewpoint of transparency and I believe we
conceded that already.

A large part of the stuff discussed had to do with physical planning
(coordinating with various entities locally), so it didn't make sense to
discuss that on a bridge. The idea of an 'open for all' meeting on phone
doesn't quite scale IMO. Maybe transcribing the minutes on IRC might be a
bit better, like some FADs we've had in the past.

Disappointed. :-/

[fedora-india] Fedora 21 Release parties

2014-12-05 Thread Siddhesh Poyarekar
Hi all,

Fedora 21 release is on the coming Tuesday (9th December), so hurry up
and plan your release parties for soon after! I have put in a request
for DVD production[1] budget for India and hope to have them ready by
mid-December and I hope to have stickers and other goodies available
around the same time. Please schedule the parties according to
availability of DVDs so that you can give them away at the event.
Also, let me know how many you need so that I can send them to you.

If you are looking to arrange a release party but are not an
ambassador, then please get in touch with an ambassador to coordinate
for you since they're the ones with access to the release party
budget. If you're looking for ideas (or the process) to arrange a
release party, then this wiki page[2] is a good starting point.
Please make sure you blog about your release parties and take plenty
of pictures and add them to the event wiki page.

People who want to register now will have to pay a donation of a
denomination of their choice. So in that context, I'd say that the
announcement was late, due to which one now won't get a chance to race
for the free registrations. If you're looking to publicize an event
to invite attendees and have such a limited offer in place, it is best
to announce in all places at the same time since it otherwise does not
give everyone a fair and equal chance to compete for free seats.
