[indiana-discuss] Missing /etc/inputrc

2009-01-27 Thread Nico Sabbi
Hi,
for us poor gnu converts and bash users it would be *extremely
pleasant* having a 1:1 mapping between keyboard and action, as we've
been accustomed to have in the last 15 years of linux ;) , even in an
ssh session.
For example having the DEL key deleting the character under the
cursor, rather than having a ~ written in the terminal, would be a
liberation from the torture of goddam old-style /bin/sh lack of
bindings.

Every time I install OS I have to copy my Suse's /etc/inputrc to
Opensolaris. May I ask why don't you include this file? After all the
default shell is now bash.
Can you add it to the distribution, please?.

Thanks,
Nico

Could you explain what you change every time?
I'm wondering if it would work fine for you to simply log in
with any English locale such as en_US.UTF-8 and make it default
in the dialog pupped up when you change login locale.

1. I click on the options button
2. I click select language
3. I choose English USA/UK (tried both)
4. I click change language
5. I click yes please, rid the world of the Swedish language and use
this forever ;-P
6. I'm logging in as usual, everything is is English

It only last until I reboot, then I'm back to Swedish again.

At least it remembers the keyboard mapping.
An easy solution/workaround is to let the computer run 24/7
but I think it would be nice if the system actually remember
the settings across reboots.

 Thanks,
 Fuyuki

If /etc/X11/xorg.conf does not exist; you can add the

But I want English language for everything else.

With Solaris 10 I got different choices for keyboard

Now I have to change that every time I log in,
but I want i set permanently, but I can't find
anywhere to change it and I don't know where to
 start search for the answer.

Pointers in the right direction are appreciated.

hi Jasse,

well, it seems to me like a bug.

Anyway, I believe that there is an easier workaround than letting
your computer run 24/7:

you can add the following line at the end of the file: /etc/default/init

LANG=en_US.UTF-8

Bug 3090 is accepted as a P2 bug[1] , apparently meaning that it will
be fixed for the next major release.

( i don't know though , if that fix will include a 1:1 mapping )

Hi Jasse,

I included some pointers below that will help you navigate OpenSolaris
information. Since we are documenting several Solaris releases, we have
information in several locations.

Let me know if you can't find something that you need.

Cindy

1. OpenSolaris information starts here:

http://opensolaris.org/os/documentation/

2. OpenSolaris administration information wiki is here:

http://wikis.sun.com/display/OpenSolarisInfo/Home

3. The Solaris Express information on docs.sun.com is most
similar to OpenSolaris features except for installation and packaging.
If you search for information on docs.sun.com, then click on the
links the Solaris Express collections. For example, the administration
collection is here:

http://docs.sun.com/app/docs/coll/47.23

While gdm displays Swedish again, if you log in as is, you will be
entered in gnome desktop env with English locale.
gdm serves for all users on a system. Thus, once the system is rebooted,
it will start with system default locale. As Javier said, to change gdm
screen permanently, need to change system default locale (/etc/default/init)
and then reboot.

Thanks,
