I hope he can give the name of this one too.

  Greetings.
Attached are two Abutilon pics from outskirts of Bangalore.
I used the FlowersofIndia and ENVIS descriptions and find that A fits
into Abutilon indicum, althought I cannot rule out glaucum.

Plant A had smaller and more deicate flowers, very velvety leaves, petals,
 mildly hairy stems
The other (163...IMG) is a bigger , more robust plant, The other one , B,
with distinct maroon/purple centre and does not match any desc. very
 fully

So my doubts remain and i would appreciate an ID and some comments on
distinguishing the 3 species persicum glaucum and indicum.

 1. FOI : A.persicum : purple lines, whereas ENVIS gives A.indicum a
 purple centre.
 2. What is the significant difference between A. indicum and A, glaucum
? ( and What is the 'ragged mallow ' referring to ?

 regrrds,
 A. Sinha

[efloraofindia:29675] Badam Tree

2010-03-12 Thread mani nair
At Veer Savarkar Marg, Mahim, Mumbai a Badam tree was allegedly poisoned by
an Outdoor Adverising Agency as the tree was blocking their hoarding
featuring a poster of the upcoming Vikram Bhatt film Shapit. Residents of
the area says the tree started shedding an unusually large number of its
leaves. I think some chemical substances had been poured into the tree by
drilling holes into its trunk. As it is the number of trees are reducing
day by day on Mumbai roads, and now these things like poisoning of trees.
The citizens of Mumbai have to suffer because of some greedy people. I
think the BMC should BAN the advertisements of these culprits. I would be
grateful if any one could tell me is there a way to save the Badam Tree
now? Is there any chance of its recovery during the rainy season?
Please help.
Regards,

Mani.

Dear Dinesh ji/ All,
The inflorescence character of the plant suggests that it is *Rungia
pectinata* (Syn *R parviflora*) but you are right the height is quit low may
be due to lack of substratum ans it is growing in rock crevices.

Re: [efloraofindia:29690] Spilanthus calva ?

2010-03-12 Thread Gurcharan Singh
Dear Tanay
A lot of good work has been done on genus Acmella recently, especially in
Taiwan. Here is the link

http://ejournal.sinica.edu.tw/bbas/content/2008/1/Bot491-11.pdf

http://ejournal.sinica.edu.tw/bbas/content/2008/1/Bot491-11.pdfThis paper
mentions all important species except Acmella calva. In fact I had uploaded
identified (got verification from authors of this paper) specimens A.
uliginosa from Delhi on our website. I was not able to find characters of A.
calva. As per information given by you A. calca should have discoid heads.
The plant here has clearly cone shaped rayed heads, discs orange yellow in
colour.
This identifies this plant with A. uliginosa
