Dear Mr Garg- as children my aunt would give us Chiraita water for
two months -- chaitra and baisakh -- it used to be very bitter and she
would give kala chana soaked overnight to eat / chew alongside - and
she would ensure that we had it in front of her as she said it is a good
tonic -- no way could yu avoid not having it --- she knew about bhingaraj
leaves -- she told us how to recognize and its habitat -- good for hair
and dandruff - this we enthusiastically learnt as it was good for hair
beauty --
I want to know the botanical name of charaita and what is it good for --
look forward to yur reply -- thanks -- chandrima

Re: [efloraofindia:31003] Fwd: botanical name of CHIRAITA

2010-03-29 Thread Parjanya guru
.. Chirita, botanically it is* Andrographis paniculata* of Acanthaceae
here in Karnataka.. We also call it as Chirayata Kaddi...
.. But Chirita, indeed is a complex.. often reffered for so many plants
include* Chirita hamosa* of Gentianaceae..
I heard that Dr. Vinaya Ghate from Agharkara Research Institute, Pune had
worked on Chirirta complex..
So anyone from ARI .. could you respond..?

Re: [efloraofindia:31006] Fwd: botanical name of CHIRAITA

2010-03-29 Thread Pankaj Oudhia
The botanical name of Chiraita is Swertia chirata but in Central India
specially in Chhattisgarh Bhuineem or Kalmegh i.e. Andrographis paniculata
is also known as Chiraita. In Bengal it is known as Alui. In Chhattisgarh
the Traditional Healers use this herb both externally as well as internally.
It is specially used in fever. It is collected in bulk from forest and
supplied to different parts of India as drug source. Due to over
exploitation, now its area is decreasing at alarming rates. This decrease is
directly and indirectly affecting the Traditional Healing practices and
public health.

I have contributed thousands of pages on this herb. Please visit
pankajoudhia.com for more information.

Re: [efloraofindia:31015] Fwd: botanical name of CHIRAITA

2010-03-29 Thread Gurcharan Singh
Chiraita as we know traditionally is Swertia chirata. I just looked up the
Useful Plants of India, and noted that most Indian names for Andrographis
paniculata start with K (similar pronounciation also is sometimes attributed
to ch): Sans: Kirata; Hindi: Kirayat; Beng: Kalmegh; Guj: Kariyatu; in other
it starts with N Tlg and Tam: Nelavemu; Kan: Nelaberu; Mal: Nelavepu.

[efloraofindia:31024] Re: Request for ID : 290310-AK-3

2010-03-29 Thread Tabish
According to Kew World Checklist (which I treat as an authority) both
Pavetta crassicaulis Bremek. and Pavetta indica L. are accepted name,
meaning they are two distinct species.
1. Pavetta crassicaulis Bremek., (accepted name)
Synonym: Pavetta stocksii Bremek.
2. Pavetta indica L. (accepted name)
   Synonyms:
Ixora pavetta Roxb., Fl. Ind. 1: 385 (1820), nom. illeg.
 Ixora indica (L.) Baill., Hist. Pl. 7: 278 (1880).
Pavetta indica var. typica Domin, Biblioth. Bot. 89: 623 (1929),
nom. inval.
Pavetta indica var. glabra Bremek., Repert. Spec. Nov. Regni Veg.
37: 119 (1934), nom. inval.
Any new light on this issue is welcome!

Re: [efloraofindia:31037] Fwd: Request for id

2010-03-29 Thread Gurcharan Singh
Anita ji
This can confuse many of us. When I saw these photographs for the first
time, my first reaction was also Saraca indica from the colour of flowers
(although they are darker here) and more distinctly the light coloured
hanging young leaves, so characteristic of Saraca also. When I saw it
identified as Brownea coccinea I immediately went to the web and also saw
photograph at Flowersofindia (the first website I visit for confirming any
doubtful plant) and was confident about Tanay's identification. Since the
two plants look so similar I could detect two main features which can help
in identifying the two: Saraca has much longer exserted stamens (not that
long in Brownea) and leaves are even pinnate (odd pinniate with terminal
leaflet in Brownea).
This one is indeed Brownea coccinea.

cymose to corymbose, 2 cm diam.; pistillate densely compound cymose at
anthesis, more open in age; branches divaricate or ascending; fruiting
pedicel 0.5-2 cm. *Perianths:* perianth of staminate flowers green or white,

[efloraofindia:31043] Re: Request for ID : 290310-AK-3

2010-03-29 Thread Dr. Pankaj Kumar
According to Kew, they are not synonyms.
Cooke's; Smith's and Dalzel Gibson are too old to follow for
synonymy I think. Smith and Dalzel Gibson were published much before
the publication of crassicaulis. But Cooke's flora is too good to help
in identification.

Pavetta indica is distributed from Indian Subcontinent to S. China and
Pen. Malaysia whereas Pavetta crasscaulis is distributed in West and
South India. This is according to Kew.

By anychance anyone has the following reference (:P hehehe) this could
be of great help:

Pavetta crassicaulis Bremekamp, Repertorium Specierum Novarum Regni
Vegetabilis 37: 112 (1934).

Pankaj

2010-03-29 Thread Nudrat
Hello,

The plant in picture is indeed Brownea coccinea without any doubt. The
inflorescence is distinctly that of Brownea.

On Mar 29, 5:49 pm, Gurcharan Singh singh...@gmail.com wrote:

Re: [efloraofindia:31058] Shorea Talura (Jalari)

2010-03-29 Thread Pankaj Oudhia
Thanks for sharing valuable pictures and information Raghu ji.

Last year I found scale insect on Shorea robusta. American taxonomist
informed that it is only reported in Shorea talura in 1918 and not reported
in Shorea of our area. Hence it was first record. For the first time at that
time my interest generated to see your Shorea. Thanks for making my wish
true.

Re: [efloraofindia:31068] Bacopa munnieri - Sambrani Tree

2010-03-29 Thread Dinesh Valke
... surely a case of mistaken identity.
*Bacopa monnieri* is a small herb, medicinally highly valued.

As per the common name *sambrani chettu*, the posted tree, could be *Boswellia
serrata*, which yields resin -- of commercial importance.

Regards.
