Dear Pankaj ji and Gurcharan ji,
I am sorry if my language is not clear enough..
1. The Calanthe Plantigenia of Kalatope id'd earlier by Pankaj ji was
found at a lower altitude and at a different time of the year
2. This one reminded me of Calanthe's BECAUSE of it's shape... BUT I do
not think it is the same as C. Plantigenia.
3. I HAD found this plant at the same place last year but then it was
not flowering (just budding) and this year by the time I had gone to
it's location (in June).. the flowering had just finished... Where the
C. plantigenia had finished flowering two months before this.

Of course I am not an expert on this subject.. Hence I'd rather wait for
next year (if I am still here) to confirm these findings..
regards
Alok

2011-09-04 Thread J.M. Garg
Here was Manudev ji's idea it was discussed among moderators agreed to:
As a taxonomist, literature collection has been a matter of difficulty,
especially those papers published in Indian journals (hope all our members
do have the same opinion). And we had discussed this earlier in our group ..

Here is a humble suggestion..!! Why can't we take an initiate in this
matter?? I think, atleast we can make a catalogue of books and journals with
each of us. So that our members can make use of that. Especially those
people revising a genus or family would be finding difficulties to collect
details from regional or local floras (including state and district floras).
Each member can put a list of their accessible material. Am not sure how
many of the members are generous enough to share their collections..
Still we can contribute much..
I am ready to contribute whatever I have.. awaiting response..!!

As Balkarji said, we don't need to upload the paper or any kind of
literature to the group, so that we can avoid the violation of copy right
laws. Also the form of the literature is also a matter of concern. If it is
a hard copy, the beneficiary should take the necessary expenses. Here i am
attaching a list of books available in my library either as hard copy or as
pdf format.

Accordingly, Manudev ji has furnished details uploaded at eFI page:
https://sites.google.com/site/efloraofindia/miscellanea/for-members-information/efi-library/manudev-madhavan

Other may also contribute suitably become a part of this great effort.

We had visited SFRI, Jabalpur this week for obtaining a grafted 'Madhuca
Indica' sapling but were told this would not be possible for them to provide
now as they had to meet their targets for the panchayat etc.

So we decided to come back to Bhopal with a non grafted Madhuca Indica,
planning to graft one ourselves. However looking at the sapling closely we
were wondering if this was after all a grafted 'Madhuca Indica' given to us
by mistake.

Would it be possible for the experts to look at the attached morphological
details ( which i hope are detailed enough) and provide their valuable
comments.

warm regards,

[efloraofindia:79548] Re: eFI library

2011-09-04 Thread raju
Dear Sir,
It will be really a nice approach. I think efl members who are far
from the reach of university library and other sources to get relevant
literature can make this a great opportunity. Moreover, if our own
member publishes any research findings in reputed journal can also
upload the same in the library for the benefit of the others (if it is
copy right free). We have already some nice research article in post.
So I would like to request to compile those entire articles in the
library.

Regards,

Raju das

Here i am
attaching a list of books available in my library either as hard copy or as
 pdf format.

Accordingly, Manudev ji has furnished details uploaded at eFI
 page:https://sites.google.com/site/efloraofindia/miscellanea/for-members-i...

Other may also contribute suitably become a part of this great effort.

It was my preconceived notion that our day would be extremely good, if our
first sighting, at Matheran, is Indian Giant Squirrel. At time and again,
the Shakharoo (state animal of Maharashtra), had given me its appearance in
this hill station at every alternative visit. The last visit, just two weeks
ago, we (Me and Sushant More) saw one with its identical rattling cries.
This time, although we were not optimistic for its sighting, but it would
have been more welcomed, if at all any.

Ten suburbanites from Mumbai (Sarang Naik, Sushant More, Avinash Bhagat,
Sonal Naik, Saurabh Gokhale, Tushar Parab, Anish Kadam, Nilesh Bhanage,
Mandar Sawant and myself) attended the Matheran nature trail on August, 21
st 2011 , a plain downhill walk (of apprx 15 Kms), along the Matheran-
Neral toy train route. Our last visit, as mentioned, after seeing the Indian
Giant Squirrel, was very much fascinating in terms of observing two
Ceropegia species (*ceropegia attenuata* and *ceropegia Vincaefolia*),
which are termed as not only endemic to Western Ghats, but also rare enough
 in the region.

At around 7.30 AM we all reached at Neral station, as pre-decided. After
having our light breakfast, in nearby restaurant, we took shared taxis to
Dastoori point (the last limit of motor vehicles), and started the trail. 10
people, with different mindset and different objectives to photography,
ensured the group is not assembling or walking in bulk, but scattering
oneself individually. Initially, me and Sushant scanned the nearby tree line
for Indian Giant Squirrel, but later given up with perhaps no hope. Avinash,
for his earlier leg injury, had to compromise on speed of walk, but we were
not in hurry atleast for next 8 hours. The day started with small herb
 *Utricularia
striatula* (local name chire-papni) and ended with Common Tree Brown
 butterfly.

Here is the classified list of our observations of the day.

 Birds

 1) White rumped shama

 3) Indian Peafowl (female)

 4) Rufous woodpecker

 5) Greater Coucal

 Matheran, is dwindling)

 2) Russel`s Viper

 3) Indian garden Lizard

A small correction. The inflorescence is called as Manjiri and not the seeds.

I have 2 Tulsi plants at home . One is called Ram tulas and the other Krishna
Tulas.I appreciate that Ram tulas is lighter and Krishna tulas is darker. Are
there medicinal differences in the two?

Some mythological significanceIt is a holy plantTulsi leaf is very dear to God
Vishnu and more so the seeds called Manjiri in Marathi and my Grandmother would
say that God Prefers one Manjiri to gold and silver or any other offering.

Chrysenthemum coronariumlovely flowers, last several days...

This plant has a checkered history... is/was a popular garden plant...
became more popular after 1982... when it was discovered to have anti

Its good to have a few of these plants around... though not this
species, but chrysenthemums as a whole improve the air quality around
them... esp formaldehyde...

Historically though some cultures have been eating it eat its greens
as a bitter... in soups and make tea...
its rich in choline and vitamin B1...

but farmers who harvest the stalks get the sap on their hands and

Flowers in short racemes 5-8 cm long on peduncles 10-20 cm long. Bracts 1 cm.
Capsules 3-4 cm. Possibly the only species of the genus that is epiphytic (at
least in NW Ghats), the rest being terrestrial. Flowering presently along with
