Yes Shrikant ji may be right. S. bigemina has 4 leaflets, S. setulosa 10-12
large leaflets and flowers in panicled secund racemes. S. hirsuta has 6-10
leaflets (8 leaflets are seen in most leaves here), also plant is slender,
leaflets smaller and flowers in close secund corymbs.

Close ups of calyx are needed for further verification.

*
*
On the net I found this interesting info by you. Thanks

Common name: Son Ghanta • Marathi: *सोनघंटा *Son Ghanta

Botanical name: Abutilon ranadeiFamily: Malvaceae (Mallow family)

Son Ghanta is one of the critically endangered plant species of the Western
Ghats. It is endemic and restricted to four districts of Maharashtra State.
This endangered species was named after N. B. Ranade who was the keeper of
the Herbarium at the College of Science, Pune, who died of the plague in
1897. It is a shrub 3-5 ft tall characterized by 2 inch long bell-like
hanging golden yellow flowers. The five petals are 4 cm long, orange yellow,
veined with purple. Stamens are united at the base into a tube 2.5 cm long.
Styles are 5, longer than the stamens. Alternately arranged leaves, 10-20 cm
long, are heart-shaped, long-pointed, with toothed margins. Fruit is 2 cm
long, hairy and ribbed. Flowering: January-February.

 Malvaceae week 09 05 2011 UD 003  Gossypium herbaceum ‘nigrum’ NYBG 08

Since about 1999 we had been seeing this BLACK…actually a deep violet leafed
cotton with very pretty  deep pink Hibiscus like flower … in several
botanical gardens and some garden clubs … but I got my chance to do some
digital photo taking in 2008 at NYBG… at the height of the summer of 2008 ..
the flowers were just beginning to open when I ventured in…   no pods had
developed yet…  but I can tell you they are usually about two inches and
look like any regular cotton pods  and burst open in October ( or there
abouts)  to reveal perfectly white regular cotton puffs….

 Family:     Malvaceae

 Genus:        Gossypium

 Species:         G. herbaceum

                         Our cultivar is ‘nigrum”

 Binomial name       Gossypium herbaceum “nigrum”

Some write it as Gossypium herbaceum  niger

This so far is a rare garden plant, people often wait for long time to swap
seeds, and garden clubs are a good source in USA … some members may have
 some to swap…

I am just happy to look at my pictures… this plant was about  24 to 28
inches tall,  its spread about 3 feet, leaves were 6-7 inches long and 6
inches wide,   fig 2 shows that its markedly hirsuit… and perhaps even  has
 some glands??

Any experts on botany of cotton here?

Can you please tell us what these round dots are?

The flowers open in morning , are 4.5 to 5 inches in diameter.,  and close
at nite…   pods develop slowly, bursting open in the fall… ( see above) .

 Enjoy.

 Thank you

Since it is a a cultivar the name also has to be within single quotes. Also
I think Nigra (with capital N) is preferred cultivar name and as such
correct name should be *Gossypium herbaceum* 'Nigra' or *Gossypium herbaceum
* cv. Nigra
Had this been a published scientific variety (unfortunately none has
been published) the name would have been *Gossypium herbaceum* var. *nigrum
*(with small n and in italics).

I think Nigra (with capital N) is preferred cultivar name and as such
correct name should be *Gossypium herbaceum* 'Nigra' or *Gossypium

Had this been a published scientific variety (unfortunately none has
been published) the name would have been *Gossypium herbaceum* var. *nigrum

it provided, my first Ulat Kambal was growing among a group of very
large, very unwieldy Aloes with their sharp leaf ends… AND the
process of fertilized ovary growing to face up towards the sky is very very
intriguing to say the least…. Process involves part of the twig growing
larger longer cells so that pedicle of the flower can do a 180 degrees
twist… Almost similar to the insectivorous plants’ trap closing mechanism…..

 Abroma augusta L.

 Syn : Ambroma augustum;

Abroma augustum ( seems to be currently preferred name )

Abroma augusta L. ( name seems ingrained in Medicine,
 Ethnobotany
 books and Homeopathic remedies )

 Bengali name: Ulat Kambal:ওলঢ কঁবল

No Sanskrit name, In Hindi called ULTA Kambal

No Gujarati name…. In the past not grown nor used in Gujarat… DON’T
KNOW if currently its being grown all over India or not, what with rapid
dissemination of Knowledge and gardening enthusiasts…

It is also not mentioned by Shushruta or Charak…. Bapalal Vaidya says it
grows in the NE Himalayan range and nearby states, and in the past was
rarely seen in the western jungles.

 Taxon: Abroma augustum (L.) L. f.

 Genus: Abroma

Family: Malvaceae

subfamily: Byttnerioideae

tribe: Byttnerieae. Also placed in: Sterculiaceae ***

Date/Time- Several Years while studying Ethnobotany, 2007 till present,
Pics are from during these years…

Location- Place, Altitude, GPS- Kolkata Horticulture Gardens Sea level
or 2-3 feet below sea level

Habitat- Garden/ Urban/ Wild/ Type- Cultivated, Herb Garden….I have also
seen it cultivated at Jute Research Institute Grounds, Ballygunj Circular
Road, Kolkata, and in private Gardens of Individuals

 Plant Habit- Tree/ Shrub/ Climber/ Herb-Shrub,

Height/Length- Most I have seen is about 10 feet tall.

Leaves Type/ Shape/ Size- Younger leaves Sagittate , older lower leaves
 are Palmate

Inflorescence Type/ Size- Individual flowers Hanging face down

 Flowers Size/ Colour/ Calyx/ Bracts- 4 to 6 cms across brownish-violet
 mixed color

Fruits Type/ Shape/ Size Seeds- Seeds are less than a mm wide,
black… covered with thick beige brown hairs.. but do not help seeds fly
far…. It seems the tuft remain in the seed pods and seeds fall off or are
 eaten … Seeds pods/ fruits are 5 to 7 cms across and 1 – 3 cms deep.

Other Information like Fragrance, Pollinator, Uses etc.-

Do not know, but see figure 6 for some insect guests… WOULD LIKE TO
KNOW the names of these beetles if possible… they seemed very busy….

USES: Medicinal: Used for Dysmenorrhoea . and in postpartum
complaints. Homeopathy: for Bronchitis, Diabetes, and Dysmeorrhoea. Main
 ingredient is *ß-sitosterol .*

This is a new plant for me... never knew cotton plants would go on and on
for years... this one does apparently... look at its stem... its about 8 - 9
inches in diameter... I always thought cotton plants were a yearly
affair... may be the agricultural pathos had brainwashed me/us...

This was in a well tended herbal Garden ... for demonstration purposes to
 Ethnomedicine and other students..

 Family : Malvaceae

 * *

 *Species: Thespesia  lampus*  (Cav.) Dalz. Ex. Dalz.  Gibs.  ;

   Syn:   *Azanzas lampas* (Cav.) Alef.;

 *Thespesia macrophylla* Blume

Vernacular names :Bengali: Ban Kapas * *বন*‌ *কাপাস

  Gujarati: Jungli Para piplo જંગલી*‌
 *પ।રસ પીપળો

This specimen was about 9-10 feet tall, grew kinda straight up, had a few
flowers, I went in 4 pm , so the flowers were closing, but the petal color
was still beautiful pink... and a few pods high up had opened up to reveal
the cotton. The leaves were varied in size... largest were 7-8 inches long.

What is used is: Various tribes use differently... Some use flower paste
for burn, root paste for eczema, juice of young pods on Scabies. I found
it very curious that Santhals of Bengal mix juice of its stem bark and
Aristolochia indica root paste on snake bite this we learned in class.

But along a Bengal village by the Damodar river we found an old lady who
said she had in the past used the root bark juice to induce miscarriage (
this is quite opposite to the effect of Thepesia populinea root bark paste
effect... which says it helps women get pregnant, esp get a male child...
 curiouser and curiouser!!!)

Come to think of it ... similar plant had been growing beyond the wall of
students' garden at a Ayurvedic college... and the local young gardeners,
very sheepishly asked us not to photograph it...

there was so much else to learn that we did not pursue that tree... but I
distinctly remember it had cotton pods.. round ones , just like this one...

 Thanks..

 RED and pink flowers

 Dear All:

 Family: Malvaceae

 Genus: Hibiscus

 Species: H. sabdariffa

 Binomial nameHibiscus sabdariffa L.

Two main varieties… we are dealing with edible red fruits Rosselle
 : *H. sabdariffa *var. *sabdariffa*

 *
 *

The plant I present here was in a pot of soil, about 5 feet tall, at the
tail end of its life, all fruits were ripe and leaves were mostly gone …
few flowers remained… flowers were deep red… about 5 inches across, 2.5
to 3 inches long at nite when closed. The fruits were 1 to 1.5 inches
long and 07 to 0.8 inches at the widest, the thick calyx was about 2 mm
thick, and sour. The dried stems of the plant at the end of its life were
very difficult to cut, matter of fact long thin cuts were found on my palms
afterward when I had tried having a tug of war with the stems…it was
then that I discovered that the other variety was non edible and source
of jute like fibre… oh sure, but this : H. sabdariffa var. sabdariffa
was doing quite well for itself…. The fibres it had produced must have
 been quite strong too….

Our Hibscus sabdariffa var. sabdariffa is an interesting vegetable….

Its called Roselle… for the red colored fleshy calyx I guess…

Striking red calyx covers the green fruit inside… the red covering is what
is we are after… mucilaginous red gooey mass upon boiling becomes an
appetizing jelly with addition of sugar and cinnamon…. In Bengal.

In the west, we drink tea made of “Jamaican TEA” with Jamaican Rosselle,
a red concoction rich in vitamin C…. add a handful in boiling water … turn
off the heat, steep , add sugar, ice and enjoy a tall cool drink…

In Australia an enterprising young group of people had turned their land to
some exotic use… they used to put the whole red rosselle fruit in the wine
bottles and /or syrup in such a way that they looked very beautiful at the
bottom of the champagne glass when transferred from their bottle to the tall
champagne glass… for a few years was very popular with Brides to be… Do
not know if they are still in business.

I have tried eating …cooked of course the green tiny fruit… but is
totally blah and too mucilaginous for my taste… I do make the jelly every
 year now yum...

Julia Morton has this to say about my plant: “The other distinct type of
roselle, H. sabdariffa var. sabdariffa, embraces shorter, bushy forms which
have been described as races: bhagalpuriensi, intermedius, albus, and ruber,
all breeding true from seed. The first has green, red-streaked, inedible
calyces; the second and third have yellow-green edible calyces and also
yield fiber. We are dealing here primarily with the race ruber and its named
cultivars with edible calyces; secondarily, the green-fruited strains which
have similar uses and which may belong to race albus. “

So I guess my plant was the *ruber race* .

 Dear all:
 Family Malvaceae

 Hibiscus schizopetalus

This from a public park... where for once it was not picked off of the
 plant by folks...
I was surprised.. since then I have found out that at least in Kolkata...
this flower is not offered by the ladies of the house to any gods...
 reason... I was not told...

Regardless I was happy... at least some flowers and the accompanying pollen
would be available to butterflies, bees... etc

The plant was about 4 feet tall and flower was about 3- 4 inches in
 diameter...

hanging on 2-3 inch long pedicabs... see fig 2...

 enjoy
