A reply from Mahadeswara ji;
Looking at the flower it is Barringtonia asiatica. Very common tree in
west coast (Bombay). Better to check the characters of the leaves as well
as the fruits for confirmation. The fruits are very characteristic for
this species - 4 angled :Box Fruit, due to distinct square like diagonals
jutting out from the cross section of the fruit.

Thanks Shrikant ji and Vijaysankar ji for the ID

*Macroptilium atropurpureum* (DC.) Urb. Syn. *Phaseolus atropurpureus*.
Initially when I checked some description I read that it has lobed leaflets
and my plant doesn't but on careful observation the plant shown by me also
has lobed leaflet.

*Macroptilium atropurpureum*, commonly known as Purple Bush-Bean or
Siratro, is a climber in the pea family native from Texas south to Peru and
Brazil, and to the Caribbean, but widely naturalized in the tropics and
subtropics.

The first photograph (leaves) and second (pedicels) suggest T. laurifolia
clearly, other photographs create some doubt.

I some how have the feeling that most photographs on the net, including
above one may not be a hybrids betwen the two species, as is also true for
Campsis grandiflora and C. radicans, where these hybrids are placed with
either species in most databases, including our FOI.

2011-11-18 Thread Ushadi micromini
Dear Jui...

AM A bit surprised... at your not sure if it is flowers or fruits

it appears you have already taken a sample... picture 2 looks like a
broken/cut branch removed from plant and put on dark background for
photography...
if that is so... did you not take one of the red FRUITS and cut it
open to see if its a fruit or a flower???

SINCE YOU ARE A RESEARCH Fellow, any way...take it to lab and do some
dissection and look under the dissecting scope etc... does not matter
which stream of specialization you are from...
I am not even a botanist nor a taxonimist... but I would do it... if I
already have a sample like you do here... I dont even have a lab... I
bring things home to my kitchen cut with sharp knives or a razor
blade ... and look with eyes, magnifying lenses and macro lens close
ups for photographs... no sections, no histological stains etc

and when you have done it ..please educate us with your new found
data...
I look forward to being told what it is

Good luck...

Neha... these seeds are supposed to be only about a mm or two...

THE REAL rudraksha can be a few mm to more than 1 CM and sometimes 2
- 3 cms in diameter...

both sink in water THOUGH ...

BUT THE SURFACE IS knobby OR LIKE SMALL SHORT PILLARS IN THE Guazuma
ulmifolia ...
SOMETIMES THEY RUN CLOSE TO EACH OTHER... BUT SR.. JUST PILLARS...
AND IN GUJARATI it HAS A VERY APT NAME ... khoto rudraksha...ખોટો
રુદ્રાક્ષ ie FALSE RUDRAKSHA

WHERE AS THE SURFACE PROTUSIONS OF THE real RUDRAKSHA BEADS (OF
Elaeocarpus
ganitrus) ARE BEST DESCRIBED AS GYRI AND SULCI LIKE IN HUMAN (OR
ANY MAMMALIAN BRAIN CORTICAL SURFACE)... ie THEY RUN FOR WHILE, CAN BE
TRACED ALONG...

BIG DIFFERENCE.

A large deciduous shrub with ribbed densely hairy branches with straight

flowers pink fading to white in 12-15 mm across heads on up to 6 cm long

2011-11-18 Thread J.M. Garg
A reply:
Yes, it hardly needs confirming but these two slightly different cultivars
(yellow and greeen) are both N. exaltata, originally a native of the
Americas, but now cultivated world-wide in many hundreds of gardens,
especially as the many different abnormal monstrosities, which constitute
various different named cultivars.
The natural species has simple pinnae, but sometimes the plumose
(very divided) forms and furcate forms are so different in shape that it is
hard to tell which actual species they belong to. However in Nephrolepis
the stipe-scales are very helpful and can pinpoint the underlying species
even when the shape has become unrecognisable due to these genetic
mutations.
Anyway, the fern itself is not very remarkable as it is widely grown,
but I must offer my congratulations to the splendid vertical stand they
have been arranged in - I have never seen such a fine display in any of the
horticultural shows I often visit. If that were shown at the annual Royal
Horticultural Show, Chelsea, London, one of the biggest and best known
shows, I'm sure it would receive a gold medal. The Queen (of England, I
mean) usually goes to visit that show, and Prince Charles is now a patron
of the British Pteridological Society (ferns!) and grows many hardy ferns
and cultivars in his superb garden at Highgrove, Gloucestershire, so would
undoubtedly be very impressed.
Now I understand what vertical gardening means - I struggle to be a
mere horizontal gardener, out the back of my flat in Kathmandu, though the
climate is fairly kind to us, apart from the Winter drought, when there's
also no water in the taps, either!
In the UK there are many very nicely organised fern-gardens, with
greenhouses for the tropical species, but this display beats the lot!
Perhaps it needs more variation in the species grown, to add to the
interest, but the idea and concept are spectacular.
   Best wishes,
 Chris Fraser-Jenkins, Kathmandu, Nepal.

This late flowering species as indicated in the key comes to flower in
August and continues to end of September as we found in Chakrata area is
much more rebust than C. canadensis, reaching 2 m in height much branched in
the upper part, branches and leaves densely hairy, lower leaves
oblanceolate, upper linear-lanceolate, heads longer and broader, 4-6 mm
across, phyllaries densely hairy with shorter hairs; broader fruiting head
 and longer pappus.
