It is above the first stop of Gandola cable car, known as Kondoor. about
500 m to its right is famous Khillenmarg meadow, and mountain slopes above
are Apharwat. The second stage cable car goes to the top of Apharwat
mountain. We have Gulmarg (2400 m), Khillenmarg (3000 m) and top of
Apharwat mountain about 4000 m. Just below this peak on the other side is
famous Ahlpathar lake.

Thanks a lot for the locations.
When we visited in September, there was a lot of mist and a few showers, so
we could not go beyond Kondoor. The second stage of cable car could be seen
going in the mist.
Due to this, we could hardly explore the place.
Hoping to visit sometime during flowering season.

[efloraindia:99705] Re: query about saprophytic plants...

2011-12-18 Thread Pankaj Kumar
Yes saprophytes are now called mycoheterotrophs and not saprophytes
any more. No plants are saprophytes anymore. ts not that they are
commonly called as mycoheteroptrophs.

Saprophytes by definition means those plants which grow on dead and
decaying organisms. But experiments revealed that actually the plants
are parasitic on fungi that might be living ind ead and decaying
organisms.

They can either be holo-mycoheterotrophs or partial mycoheteroptrops.
Holo is completely dependent on the fungus and partial
mycoheteroptrops are not completely dependent.

Do they have association with particular fungus. Yes they have
association with species from particular group of fungus. Fungi is
classified into Fungus can be of two groups, Arbuscular mycorrhizal
fungi (Glomeromycota) or Ectomycorrhizas (Basidiomycota, Ascomycota,
and Zygomycota).

If you are talking about the plants which makes association with
fungus. Then the fungus can be highly specific for a particular
species of plant. For orchids, they are highly specific.

For fungal classification, may be one of our members, Tanay can explain better.

Tanay is right, but i slightly differ from him at one point.
There are plants which are partially myco-heterotrophic. Example
Corallorhiza trifida. This plant lacks leaves, but they have green
pigments on fruits and stems and these green pigments help them in
managing some food but its not enough for the plant. So they help of
fungal mycelium to make contact with other angiospermic plant (Betula

 Dear all,
This is *Carlluma diffusa *(Wight) N. E. Brown, collected from Tamil
 Nadu.

 *Caralluma* R.Br.,

*Caralluma* named from the Arabian 'qarh alluhum', a flesh wound or
abscess; for the floral odour of some species (Keith Bensusan, 2009). *C.
indica* flower with rotten fungus like odour is the best example for
this. The genus *Caralluma* is mainly paleotropical in its distribution
and is the most widely distributed group among the stapeliads, from the
Canary Islands in Macaronesia to the Indian subcontinent (Bruyns et al.
2010). The subtribe Stapeliinae G. Don. belongs to the tribe Ceropegieae
Decne ex Orb. of the subfamily Asclepiadoideae R. Br. ex Burnett (Endress
Bruyns 2000, Meve Liede 2004). This subfamily has traditionally been
treated as a family Asclepiadaceae, but molecular evidence has demonstrated
that the group, monophyletic though it is, is ested within the Apocynaceae
 Juss. (A.P.G. 2009.)

Stem fleshy; branches ascending, 4-angled, nearly of equal thickness
throughout the branches; internodes glabrous. Leaves absent, leaf scars
present, with appendage-like growth at nodes on angled portion. Flowers in
terminal umbellate cymes, many-flowered; bracts triangular, acute at apex,
 glabrous; pedicels terete, glabrous. Calyx 5-lobed, divided up to base;
lobes lanceolate, acute at apex, glabrous. Corolla campanulate, lobes 5,
ovate, acute at apex, ciliate at margin only, otherwise glabrous. Corona
 biseriate; the outer annular, arising from base of stamens, closely intact;
lobes with two horn like appendages widely separated from each other; the
inner variable, linear, arising from inner side of outer corona,
overlapping anther-lobes. Stamens 5, pollinia 5, pollen masses solitary in
each anther cell, yellow, waxy with pellucid layer attached by light brown
caudicles. Follicles up 10-15 cm in long.

Type: India: Madras Presidency; Coimbatore District, arid rocky mountains
 near Coimbatore at 600m elevation.

Flowering Fruiting : Throughout the year.

2011-12-18 Thread Ushadi micromini
AMAR:

I had read in Turner's book about common poisonous plants and
mushrooms of north america that even the water from the flower vase
in which the flowers were displayed was toxic Professor Turner
says even one leaf is fatal for humans... she cautions that people
should not burn its twigs or use it to roast meat etc as
skewers...because smoke from it is also poisonous and if there are
many neriums in one spot and honey bees make honey from it, that too
is poisonous...

and animals when they ingest at little as 0.005% of their body weight
of the foliage... they can die...

And she used to say our indian yellow karen..thevetia ...is the most
common cause of severe toxicity on Hawaiian islands where its grown
profusely for their pretty yellow flowers.. children often eat their
interesting looking seeds.. But right here in my own neighborhood
there are ten or of the yellow thevetias, and have never heard of a
case of poisoning, may be out children in Kolkata do not eat these
fruits...

I personally never quite believed her, because she was a worry-wort
and thought every thing under the sun was poisonous, but I have myself
seen cases of Hepatic thrombosis AND necrosis leading to death from
drinking green tea made from Comfrey leaves... I did learn to heed
her advice... Also...she was only writing about what is reported in
medical literature... SO IT BEHOOVES US TO PAY HEED...

Earlier we used to make fun of her because once she came to a herb
class and said in the passing that one should avoid cauliflowers as
veggies... they were toxic... we knew that if you eat ten
cauliflowers a day for a year...goiter would result... but toxic as
veggie only in season, and that too may one 1/8th or so per person...
NOO, TO THE CONTRARY... ITS A BRASSICA... HAS ANTI-CANCER PROERTY
AS IN ALL BRASSICAS...

I read on Wiki about the toxicity of this plant, I would like to ask, is
this plant really that toxic to humans if its leaves, fruits or flowers are
ingested? On one line I read it is quite toxic to horses - only 100 gms is
enough to kill a horse and with reference to humans, there were few
 reported deaths of humans...
