My earlier mistake (wild guess) helped solve the identity of this tree
very common in Uttaranchal in Naintal, Almora, Ranikhet, kausani area. I
was just about to upload it for ID, when I thought about Aesculus indica
(which I know very well), I had photographed in Ranikhet area, and search
in our group led me to this thread.

Thanks once again, no mistaking now., but yes wild guesses will
continue, they help to activate others.

 Neil ji
I think you are right. Dalia ji your using name Rudraprayag (3500 m)
confused me. By the way what is the altitude of Kakragad, as this species
rarely ascend higher than 1800 m. Yes the tree flowers in January-February
when the tree is leafless, and the fruits are expected by April. This may
not happen in Rudraprayag area where flowering season does not start
 before
 April-May.

  Hi Friends

Requesting ID for few more trees - in Uttarakhand, Kakragad , 50 KM
 from Rudraprayag.
During my visit in April 2011 for a bird watching trip, our guide told
me that birds are very fond of these fruits. Incidentally there was no
 leaf
on the tree at that time.

 Please help with ID.

 Thanks

Romanisation problems
To: indiantreepix@googlegroups.com

Dear all,
I always have difficulties creating or checking some names when using
transliterators (devices that convert a romanised name into the correct
script. Examples:
Phyllanthus emblica is Āṃvalā or better still āṃvalā because using a
capital can introduce errors or unresolved characters. Passing this through
several transliterators I get अ?वला because the ṃ works in one direction
but not in reverse. In order to get the correct (I presume) word आंवला
one needs to type anwalaa. This is one that I can explain but the
following I can't. Can you please help / explain:
Akhroṭ for Juglans regia gives अख्रो? ṭ is the unresolved character. I
thought the correct Hindi words was अखरोट = Akharot / Akhrot. Is this
correct?
Justicia adhatoda Aḍūsā gives अ?उसा .ḍ is the unresolved character.
What is the correct name ?

Some of the transliterators online are:
WebDunia Utilities, 2009.
http://utilities.webdunia.com/hindi/transliteration.html .
*Google Transliteration*. http://www.google.com/transliterate .
*TamilCube* http://www.tamilcube.com/translate/hindi.aspx .
The blogger Ankit Agrawal who knows what it is all about, unlike me, lists
others and comments on their technical merits. But they appear to be all
add-ons, extensions etc. I am told these may introduce
incompatibilities (especially when one uses 30 scripted languages) so I
tend to stay away from those and prefer online facilities. What do you
think ? is there a tech head among us ?

http://techcruser.blogspot.com.au/2008/05/english-to-hindi-transliteration.html.
Thanks.

2012-05-01 Thread rkmkbk
Before jumping to any conclusion, Chennai may not have any lichen of this
type. Then there is no chance for any Bryophyes also.

 Dear Friends,

 *Vanakkam! *Greetings from Chennai.

The Lichen-like growth on Champangi tree (Frangipani) that I had written
to you earlier I feel are actually growth of adventitious roots.

In this the bark on the stems splits open and there are maggots like roots
growing out of the splits. At first they looked quite freaky and weird, for
they were nowhere near the ground!

I am informed that these are fairly common in tomatoes, triggered by
stress, or high humidity, or for unknown reasons.

But is it worthwhile cutting off the branch with the roots and replanting?

 cheers,

Hi Satish Ji.
Does your plant has any potential of being Laguncularia racemosa? This
medium sized mangrove
tree is widely distributed in the tropics. The plant is characterized by
thick, scaly (often reddish) bark
and extra-floral nectaries present at the base of the leaf. Looking at the
2nd photo it seems there
are nectaries present (or may be I am fascinating).
