Next I checked our database and realised that though several uploads have
been suggested as L. cephalotes, they mostly turned out to be some other
 species.
The species is very distinct from other species that ir has single
terminal compact head-like verticillaster with numerous closely overlapping
bracts which concoel most of the calyx, and only one or two flowers may be
seen coming out at a time, one or two floral leaves emerging from top of
the head. The leaves are ovate to lanceolate in shape. Plant is up to 1 m

Re: [efloraofindia:172349] Weed for ID Hyderabad 31102013-NAW

2013-11-01 Thread Nadeem Waqif
the flower stalk would be considered 'long' tho the pictures dont clearly
show it, it can be infered from the stalk of a bud shown in the 1st picture
above. So this would be long--stalk heart-leaf sida or *sida cordata *as
shown in the flowers of india site and as per the discussion on the
efloraindia page on sida cordata, rather than the short-stalk medicinal
heart leaf sida or *sida cordifolia.*

I was about to rip it off while weeding but then i thought i might as well
photograph it and check out what you all have to say espe since the flower
is so striking.

Thanks all.

[efloraofindia:172363] Gloriosa Superba, Rothschildiana, other colours and Tacca black and white.

2013-11-01 Thread Selina Street
Hi!

I am from Malaysia.

I require help in getting some seeds and tubers of the Gloriosa Lily and
Tacca. They are native plants of Malaysia but could not be found in plant
nurseries - probably because no one wants to grow a lily considered as a
weed that is poisonous too! The Australian actually went gallivanting in
the rainforest, took home Taccas and make huge commercial nurseries!
Cultivating methods using seeds take too long, might as well sow zinnias
today and it sprouts tomorrow. Digging up the bulbs if found growing
somewhere in the rain-forest is another matter. I think the phrase is
'Have trowel, will travel'.

I know that India grows loads of this plant for medicinal purposes SO can I
have help in procuring these tubers and seeds?

Agricultural companies only sell in bulk. I have bought tubers from e-bay
and they arrived badly crushed and useless. Seeds ordered were never
delivered (got a refund)!

I am willing to fork-out the expenses incurred in getting these items;
circa 10 bulbs of mixed colours if possible and seeds too. Can PAYPAL be
used in India? If not, kindly suggest other methods. I feel that it is
important to appreciate native plants, not just imported roses!

I hope I can get a response soon because end of the year is a good year for
planting as the temperature drops by a few degrees.

Thanks for reading.

Regards,
Selina

After considerable search I think that it is Trevia nudiflora L., a
variable species, transferred to Mallotus as follows:
*Mallotus nudiflorus* (L.) Kulju Welzen, Blumea 52: 124. 2007. However,
in Flora of India, volume 23, it is treated as Trevia nudiflora with four

Re: [efloraofindia:172450] Euphorbiaceae Fortnight : Euphorbia tirucalli, L. = Pencil Tree - Bangalore - RA

2013-11-01 Thread Tapas Chakrabarty
Once again a very common species posted.
T. Chakrabarty.

On Fri, Nov 1, 2013 at 10:10 PM, raman raman_arunacha...@yahoo.com wrote:

 http://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/43406542/Flora%20and%20Fauna/Trees%20of%20Bangalore/Euphorbia%20-%20Pencil%20Tree/Pencil%20Tree.html

Euphorbia tirucalli has unmistakable, brush-like branch masses that are a
noticeable feature of the plant. It also occurs over the widest
distribution of all local euphorbias and is also a very variable plant
ranging from many-branched shrubs to large trees, depending on the
particular habitat. The rubber-hedge euphorbia is a many-branched,
succulent plant, usually 3-5 m but may reach 10 m on occasion. The bark of
very old specimens is grey and rough with longitudinal dents and ridges
that break up into very small fragments. There are sometimes conspicuous,
small protuberances, such as a bulge, knob, or swelling, on the bark, and
occasionally black, rough, crosswise bands. The branches are cylindrical,
smooth and glabrous-green, 5-8 mm in diameter, forming brush-like masses
that are the best known feature of this species. Plants are without spines.
The leaves are small and slender, up to 12 x 1.5 mm, rarely seen, as they
fall very early. Leaf scars on young twigs form conspicuous dents which
contract until they are no more than grey dots on older branchlets and can
even be seen on fairly thick green stems. The thin twigs are pendant
(hanging down), pale green and occur opposite each other, alternate or in
groups on the branchlets which gives a rather untidy and rounded appearance
to the crowns. The flowers are yellow, inconspicuous, and carried in
clusters at the apex of the short branches or in the angles of branches.
They appear in September to December.

Star Gooseberry is a small deciduous tree reaching about 25-30 ft in
height. Leaves are compound, 14-25 inches long, crowded at the ends of the
branches leaflets 2-3.5 inches long by 1-1.5 inches wide, alternately
arranged along the rachis, ovate or obliquely ovate, acute or somewhat
acuminate, base rounded or somewhat wedge-shaped. The genus name
Phyllanthus is derived from Greek words meaning leaf-flower, an allusion to
the apparent bearing of flowers on the leaves. The species name acidus is
on account of the acidity of the fruit. Flowers are very minute, in short
dense spike-like clusters arising from nodules along the branches, like
mulberries. Fruit is pendulous, in small clusters from the branches, round
or slightly flattened at the poles, with shallow or deep ribs (usually 5)
0.75 inch across. The tree usually flowers and produces fruit twice a year.
Fruits appear simultaneously with the flowers. So, the tree usally has
fruits hanging from it, at any time of the year. The fruit is used chiefly
for pickling and for the preparation of preserves. It makes an excellent
jam. Star Gooseberry is native of Malay Islands and Madagascar and
frequently grown in India for its acid fruit.
