Subject: Re: [efloraofindia:463934] Selaginella adunca: Rare and Endemic NW
Himalayan Species
To: J.M. Garg

Yes, that's right!. Don't worry the e-flora is far from complete and they
are gradually assimilating the information from my 3 volumes of the
Annotated Checklist of Indian Pteridophytes (though they often don't like
to admit it!), where of course S. adunca is treated. So it will be in in
due course, one assumes. It is locally common N. of Mussoorie and there
is a very slightly different vicariant of it in China, the typical
bicentric distribution of species that like rather dry conditions and can't
stand the central Himalayan wet climate (from C. Nepal to Sikkim).

Now I suggest going to Pithoragarh to look for the superb S. pulvinata,
another and much rarer dry-zone species:

c. 1700 m., on open, S.-facing, dry rock-ridge by grassy slope beside new
road N. to Malpa from Tawaghat, c. 1 km. N. of Pangola, c. 15 km. N. of
Tintola, c. 25 km. (by new road) N. of Tawaghat, N. of Darchula and
Pithoragarh, on west side of Kali river valley, Pithoragarh District,
Uttarakhand, India. CRFJ, 23.11.1994.

21723 (FN 390). Selaginella pulvinata (proposed to be the original
"Sanjeevani" herb of Valmiki's *Ravanala*, see Fraser-Jenkins, Indian Fern
J. (2010), I find it has a slightly bitter taste, CRFJ 2012). PC. Mostly
dried and curled up to form brown tennis-ball-like spheres, but soaking
opened them up to form flat rosettes. My photos 283 (200-02): 0845-0868.

If you are able to cultivate S. adunca, you may well manage with S.
pulvinata as well. A bit naughty naughty to show it in a pot? But S.
adunca is locally abundant, so no harm done.

Have you managed to keep it going through a whole year? Those dry-loving
species are rather tricky to cultivate I imagine.

Best wishes,
   Chris Fraser-Jenkins, at RBG, Edinburgh

This is Hydrocotyle verticillata Gnanapriya ji. Difference is very clear,
leaves in Centella asiatica have a notch on one side, where as here they
are totally peltate with no notch, the same way as lotus leaves (no notch)
vs Water Lily (with notch).

Re: [efloraofindia:463966] Names of Plants in India :: Plantago major L.

2024-04-06 Thread Dinesh Valke
Many many thanks, Sam ji, for the appreciation, and for pointing to Kerala
Plants site for Malayalam names of *Plantago major*.

While compiling names of *Plantago major* L. ... I found that the Floras of
peninsular India have included *Plantago major* *auct. non L.* ... a
synonym of some other distinct *Plantago*. often of Plantago asiatica L.

*Plantago major* in Kerala plants is *Plantago major* *sensu Hook. f.*, Fl.
Brit. India 4: 705. 1885 p.p., *non L.* 1753;
synonym of *Plantago erosa* Wall. ... which is considered as synonym
of *Plantago
asiatica* subsp. *erosa* (Wall.) Z.Yu Li

Thus, these names നിലചക്ക nilachakka and രമ്പൂരി njaramboori refer to
another *Plantago major*.

Regards.
Dinesh

Re: [efloraofindia:463962] Names of Plants in India :: Plantago major L.

2024-04-06 Thread Sam Kuzhalanattu
Dear Dinesh ji,
Vibrant photo and good work.
Kerala plants site mentioned it's Malayalam names as *Nilachakka* *നിലചക്ക*
(*nila*m means land and *chakka* means jackfruit but I think the name is
derived of it's rosette leaves) *Njaramboori* *ഞരമ്പൂരി* (*njaramb*u means
vein and *oori* means loosing, but I think this name is related to it's
medicinal value). I am also documented this plant (white variant) from
Munnar region. Thank you for ID.

[efloraofindia:463932] eFloraofIndia website updated up to 31st March’24: more than 14,000 species

2024-04-06 Thread J.M. Garg
It’s heartening to reiterate that *Efloraofindia*
* is
the largest google e-group/ forum in the world *in this field & the largest
nature related e-group (and the most constructive) in India with around
4,63,800 messages so far & membership currently more than 3485 nos.

efloraofindia (eFI in short) website is one of
the biggest non-commercial site, one of its kind in the world & also
without advertisements, based on the collection of photographic images of
wild plants, where no money or professional organisation is involved except
for the selfless efforts of its members from diverse backgrounds. It is
documenting the Flora of India that is being discussed on efloraofindia google
e-group along with
supplementing the working of the group.* It also has the largest database
on the net on Indian Flora with more than 14,000 species (along with more
than 4,00,000 pictures)*, from some of the best Flora Photographers of
India. You can go through Story of eFloraofIndia’s journey on 15th
anniversary
.
Members
should add Efloraofindia website
 link in their favourites
& give species’ links from this while posting or replying in a thread as a
lot of discussed data is already available here.
Intent of this website is compilation of all the posts on ‘efloraofindia’
e- group along with providing other details so that it’s useful to all
concerned as all the data about a particular species will be available
under a single head & *easily searchable*. However, correctness of data/
identification in the efloraofindia (earlier indiantreepix) links is
dependent on the members’ inputs in that particular link. Therefore,
errors/ mistakes cannot be ruled out- everyone is requested to point them
out for corrections by sending an email to https://groups.google.com/>>. Anybody can also add comments about it, at
the bottom of the page.
We now have images on all species pages. We have simultaneously started
displaying these at genera & family pages with comparative images of
various species for easy identification (all the families except for
Poaceae, Orchidaceae and Zingiberaceae already completed). Insertion of
images has also increased the accuracy of the efloraofindia database
. *More
than 3,00,000 unique images have already been inserted as of 31.1.21.*

More important is the fact that thousands of observations of hundreds of
our members are available here (many of which one will not find documented
anywhere) & easily searchable through general web searches (after
adding efloraofindia) as well as by searching on the Efloraofindia
 website
. And these are going to
increase with every passing day. These original observations will be a
treasure trove & will be a delight to a lot of people. With the pace at
which new species are being added to our database, it should become the
premier resource for taxonomic research in India. As the data is
multiplying, we need more volunteers to take up this work. Details can be
seen at Volunteers required
.

For better viewing of species’ pages, colour scheme & formatting is being
followed as at the footer of every efloraofindia page.

These days a lot of information about Indian Flora is available under Cc-by
license
(Licensees may copy,
distribute, display and perform the work and make derivative works based on
it only if they give the author or licensor the credits in the manner
specified by these). Due credits/ attributions are to be given. Such
sources include Wikipedia, India Biodiversity Portal, IUCN Red List, PFAF,
Flora of Tibet website, IBIS Flora etc. I am trying to add such information
with due credits. I am also trying to add keys & summarizing the
information at the top of the page (for the pages I am coming across while
adding information from current threads). Genera pages are also cleaned up
so that species (due to wrong botanical names or being syn. of some
other species) are deleted or properly connected as per the currently
accepted name along with references. Future eFI genera pages will be like
*Cyanotis* depending upon
the time we get, as & when we update a genus page so that we are aware
which are the species which are likely to be found in India (depending on
the net resources) & which are already available in eFI.

Kudos & thanks to Outstanding Contributors
