  Dear Members,

My new book 'Trees of Pune' on which I was working for last 3 years was
launched in Pune on 19 th September. Brief information on the contents of
the book was posted earlier but can also be seen on a page at
www.idsahyadri.comThe interactive map on this site provides viewing of
locations for 250 species of rare, heritage and avenues trees of Pune on
Google map. I would like to know if every tree species in any city has been
  documented before.

The navigation for identification is based on features of leaves. A sample
page image is also provided. I am sure that ITP members will enjoy
  navigating through this field guide.

The book though titled as 'Trees of Pune' is useful for every city because
most of the 482 trees would be found in every city.
The book is priced at Rs. 600 and as indicated earlier a discount of Rs.
100 is the privilege of ITP members.
Please send your requirements so they can be catered to. With regards,

But on my recent visit to ChandagaI village (Sep 2010), I was curious to know
 if
the parakeets were returning back to the same dead tree. I was quite amazed to
see that the tree I had deemed dead was sporting yellow flowers in some ofits
branches. The tree had me properly fooled I thought.
Later, a villager who came by there to walk his dog explained that many years
ago theirrigation water canal supervisor had chopped all the branches of
thistree and was about to chop the trunk too when a few villagers hadstopped
 him
from doing so and let him off with a warning.

But then again,  what if no  parakeet spectacle seen in this tree,  I thought
that this tree has had a rebirth, what with it sprouting yellow flowers once
 again !

This tree is locally believed to be chagache - loosely translates to sesbania

 The tower (tree) of babble

It’s a tree, full of holes and deep openings that lies dead and withering but
that hasn’t stopped these great conversationalists (Rose ringed parakeets)
 from
perching here come evening. This dead tree lies in a field, on the village
outskirts, giving the birds a place to rest and unwind without fear of
 anything.
It took them a while to accept my presence as well.

August - monsoon time – and by 4 PM, the villagers start returning home quite
early with the days’ gathering on their head shoulders (read vegetables,
mostly greens, hay, green grass, pulses, sugar cane, plantain…). They return
early to avoid the evening monsoon rains, winds and the cold air that blows
 by
the river floods. There’s a transition taking place in the evening sky as the
sun goes down and against this, the beautiful parakeets are etched out as if
 in
technicolour. It’s a riot of colour and speech then as these lovely parakeets
talk, chatter and perhaps even squabble with one another, flying in as they
 do
and a new flock joining them from a different direction. Probably, the
 villagers
and the parakeets are in tandem as regards reaching home early during this
 season.

What is strange is that even after two years and after umpteen visits,
especially during sunset, I was not able to sight these divine parakeets on
 the
 same tree.

Come dusk and villagers return home after a hard days’ work, sometimes in
 their
bullock carts, at times walking, carrying their burden on their heads – this
scene never fails to delight me. Will share some of the photos soon..

2010-10-05 Thread Dr. Arvind Kadus
Dear All I do not agree with few statements of Shrikant Ji
like 'Kas
flora diversity and distribution has not changed a bit in the last 35
years. This is in spite of trampling, burning, grazing and other
local interventions over infinite years. Plants regenerating from
seeds are abundent and
plucking by a few over enthusiasts makes a little or no difference to
their re-appearance. Plants said to have some use are plucked the
most.'
Pants are abundent right now as per your statement but what about
next? ''Plucking by a few over enthusiasts makes a little or no
difference to
their re-appearance''. I strongly oppose this statement of yours. Dear
sir, if every single visitor is plucking out a single plant every time
what will happen? Its a common sense multiplication naturally stops
after some time, may take longer time but it happens always. May be
there is no change at Kas, as shrikant Ji said but if this continues,
the day will no longer to turn Kas in Plataeu like Pachgani. Shrikant
Ji as per your statement then Pachgani and Mahabaleshwar also seems to
be same as they are in last 35 years? isn't it?
Dear all these are my opinions and ofcourse everyone has a right to
express with his own veiws.
Thanx to support.

I have yet tolocate a glabrous green leaves description for lavandula. There
seems to be lot of confusion. Many citations on internet consider L. buchii
as var. buchii of L. bipinnata. GRIN considers  two as distinct species.
Hortus Third considers L. buchii as var. buchii of L. pinnata (is silent
  about L. bipinnata).
  L. pinnata, L. bipinata, L. multifida and L. buchii seem to be very closely
  related sspecies, and often confused.
There is a Botanical Manograph on Lavandula published in 2004, partially
online. Perhaps this may solve puzzle. Description of L. bipinnata is
visible characterised by 2-pinnatisect deeply dissected narrow linear
segments, downy indumentum of simple or hooked hairs (I wonder whether it is
so in Dinesh and Prashant ji's photographs).

2010-10-02 Thread Dr. Arvind Kadus
Rashida Ji, I will post the photoes of Diplocyclos seeds which can
help for the differences between two sp. In Ayurveda seeds are used as
medicine. In the photoes there are no leaves seen thats why it is
confusing for ID.But it is not solanum sp. 100 %.1.There is no calyx
present at the base of fruit 2. No thorny structure,3. No dried thorny
shrub at surrounding, 4. Most probably most of the solanum sp. fruits
turns Yellow ar Orange ( may be red in S.indicum) after ripening.4.
When plant gets dried fruits also get dried and not ripened and fresh.
Thanx.

Not to confuse cucurbits with Solanum species. Cucurbits are usually
climbers with tendrils, not found in Solanum. Most important, curcubit fruit
has a scar at the tip showing pisition of attachment of floral parts, not
  found in Solanum.

Yours is surely Diplocyclos palmatus, as suggested by Arvind ji

Yes Neil Ji, it is Varas [Heterophragma quadriloculare]and not the
Spathodea campanulata. I agree with you, but it is not a Stereospermum
colais definitely. One thing I remember in Dapoli Krishi Vidyapeeth
there is a same plant in a nursary in a pot named with Stereospermum
sp.We told the authorities that this is not a patala or padal, they
explained that in younger stage it seems to be appear like this only.
But my observation is that in younger stage S. sp. looks different

Onother thing is that in ancient time or in Ayurveda ,the synonames
of the plants are given or the plant is recognised with many names
depending upon its habitat, colour, size, shape of the flowers and
fruits, taste of the leaves, flowers, fruits etc..
e.g.
1. Shatavari- having 100s of roots.
2. Gokshura- spiny fruits get inserted to cow's toes.
3. Chitraka - Discolouration of skin takes place after application.
4. Kumari- Which never get fruits.
5. Amlika - having amla i.e. sour taste.
6. Ashwagandha- with the smell of horse, or smell in Stable.
7. Agnimantha-( Premna integrifolia) - Agni is produced by rubbing the
dry wood sticks with each other.

many many other examples can be given like this. In this case both
Godhadi and Gokshura are totally opposite things and can not be the
synoname for the same plant.

Gokshura. Other synonames are Gokantaka, Shwadanshtra ( teeth like

[efloraofindia:45368] Re: Is it some Cassia??

2010-08-24 Thread Dr. Arvind Kadus
Dear All
In above picture there are neither pods nor flowers( opened) seen.
There is a weed, same as that of C.tora is found all where. having
same features but small flowers and short fruit i.e. pods. In C. tora
length of pod is round about 3 inches.
So difference bitween these two sp. should be clarify. I have seen
both the sps.
In ayurveda seeds are used, some people make Subji/ Bhaji from the
tender leaves which is said to be carminative.

Your photoes are seems to be B. purpurea, But real flowers I have seen
or captured are absolutely white, not ant tinge of pink or purple. One
thing I have observed is that there are only two fertile stamens
present in photo. Another thing is that this plant is not a shrub and
it is a medium sized tree. I should have to collect some specimen
flowers to clear all the things. Let me give some time. Thanks to

Yes nice solution. You can try that with a new emerging soft structure.

In the photographs uploaded by Neil ji, the following features are obvious

   1. Endogenous nature of structures
   2. absence of any covering cataphylls of juvenile leaves at the tip

To me they look like adventitious roots as suggested by Neil ji, which
eventually don't enlarge much and harden into thorns.

Dear Neil ji, all the plants of B. retusa I have seen, all were with
the thorns at bottom i.e. on the stem ( younger plants only). But as they
   grow these thorns disappear.
These are not the roots as per my observation. Because they do not grow
   longer or to the earth.
   Thanx.

'Gota' means Stones from the rivers or oceans. In marathi we oftenly
use these words like Gota i.e. 'Dokyat kay 'Gote' Bharalet kay?' or
'Narmadecha Gota' etc.etc.i.e. Very smooth or polished, when children
do not understand some concepts or some thing even repeating and
repeating oftenly, we use these words to indicate that your brain is
empty or like Gota.
This is not actually related to Sagargota, but seeds are quite similar
to Gota, thats why Sagargota.
Lata means Valli or climber. Karanj means like karanj having bitter
taste.( I think). Inspite of bitter taste this plant giving sweet
results.
This is just for the information.
Thanx.
Dr. Kadus Arvind.

 Thanks Arvind ji for information.

Any idea about reasons behind its name as Lata Karanj. Karanj is Hindi name
of Pongamia pinnata (and Karanja based on Karanj is  situated near Nagpur.).
 Lata means climber.

And why Sagargota? Sagar means ocean and gota ?

In my state when I go for collection of Sagargota the Healers ask for the
purpose of use. After getting my answer they tell to come after fifteen or
more days. Menawhile they irrigate the plants with different herbal extracts
and leachate. It is their Traditional Allelopathic
 Knowledgehttp://www.google.com/#hl=ensource=hpq=%22Traditional+Allelopathic+
They claim that this process enriches the plants with desired medicinal
properties. As proof they give treated and untreated plant parts and effects
are visible on patients. This knowledge is not mentioned in our anicnet
literautres but still it is our traditonal knowledge.

Hi,
Nice shots !
I have not seen the situation like this before.I think The Baby plants
also knowing the condition of the 'Earth', they are also trying to
conserve the nature and trying to come out early from the comb.
Apart from this, in Ayurveda Tentu or O.indicum is one of the contents
of 'Dashamoola' group used in many Vata disorders. Roots are used,
thats why large exploitation is there. Need to cultivate in large
scale ( In situ as well as Ex situ.)
