[efloraofindia:455663] Re: Names of Plants in India :: Alangium salviifolium (L.f.) Wangerin

2023-09-26 Thread Dr Pankaj Kumar
Not many people know this. But there was a concept of "Hu Card Index',
developed by late Prof. Shiu Ying Hu, a China-born, Professor as Chinese
University of Hong Kong. She collected names since the first publication
in 1753 for all Chinese Plants, where ever she could find and prepared a
collection of over 1.5 lakh cards. And, she had staffs to help. Her index
is still maintained at the Arnold Arboretum at Harvard University.
This effort by Dinesh sir, single-handedly, is nothing less than that. We
should call it, "*Valke Card Index of Indian Plants*'. It is really a good
work, literally going unnoticed.
Best regards
Pankaj

I think your plant is Polygonatum verticillatum. Petals are very distinct.
Cirrhifolium has much longer tendrils on a narrower leaf.

2022-06-05 Thread Dr Pankaj Kumar
Keep up the good work. You are the next generation of Indian Plant
Taxonomist, hopefully beyond India too. Please remember that Plant
taxonomists and field botanist do not need to be trained to be one. It has
to come from inside.
We do plants because we love plants.
Best regards

[efloraofindia:393465] Re: 104 ID wild plant orchid

2021-07-27 Thread Dr Pankaj Kumar
This does look close to Luisia zeylanica which has leaves that start
tapering almost 1-2 inches before the apex. In this plant at least I can't
see that character. Luisia zeylanica also has much narrower petals than
this. I can faintly see the there are 5 veins on the petals, which is also
a character of L. zeylanica. I would be more than happy to see a fresh
flower.
Till then we can consider Saroj sir's id correct.
Thanks and regards
Pankaj

[efloraofindia:378798] Re: ORCHIDACEAE Juss. Fortnight: Vanilla orchid for id from Calicut University Botanical Garden BS 30

2021-03-15 Thread Dr Pankaj Kumar
Ok I am extremely sorry. There is some issue here. It was originally
identified as Vanilla aphylla too, but later in 1890s it was pointed out
that this was Vanilla wightiana which was a spelling mistake for Vanilla
wightii.
So for the time being this has to stay as Vanilla wightii, however, I think
this is a very normal Vanilla aphylla. Both do not have leaves.

[efloraofindia:346527] Re: Luisia species for ID_1_20_03_2020

2020-03-29 Thread Dr Pankaj Kumar
Respected Sir
I want to help, but that can happen only if you can provide multiple pics
from multiple angles with a closeup of flower.
I need to see a pic of labellum spread out to see the side lobes. This is
for all Luisia.
You cant id a Luisia with this pic.

[efloraofindia:346526] Re: Luisia species for ID_3_20_03_2020

2020-03-29 Thread Dr Pankaj Kumar
This is the main problem with saying/guessing a name. The sender thinks of
it as the id.
I had already responded to this pic, but I dont know why I dont see my
comments here. I returned back to recheck but the poster is happy with the
name primulina!!
Anyways, this is 100% not primulina. I have seen primulina, please look at
the scale of the flower (can actually be done knowing the width of leaves.
Primulina is much large flowered.
There is another species, Luisia macrotis.
It is advisable to post multiple pics from multiple angles for better ID. I
cant even see the leaves.
Thanks and regards
Pankaj

Dear Sir
Thanks for your message.
I will suggest that if you are not doing any research then please do not
collect any plants just for the sake of collection. This is although a
common plant, but for example I have never seen it in Jharkhand during my
studies. It had been reported from there in past.
Thanks and regards

Sorry, I gave him wrong name by mistake earlier. B. cylindraceum will have
large bract before flowers and B. khasyanum will not have. Hence this is
khasyanum.
It was my mistake earlier. But, now I assume I am correct. I checked the
type.
Thanks a lot for sharing.

ok this is a bit confusing, but I think this is Crepidium biaurita and not
purpureum.
Its a bit mature flower so colour changed. It happens. If you look at the

This is very strange, infact at once I thought this is a hybrid of
Crepidium acuminatum and purpureum but I think this is merely a deformed
flower of Crepidium acuminatum.

[efloraofindia:321115] Re: World Flora Online (WFO), a successor of The Plant List

2019-05-05 Thread Dr Pankaj Kumar
I just notcied one strange thing from WFO.
THERE IS NO PARTICIPATING MEMBER FROM INDIA. AMAZZING. AND NO
INDIAN BOTANIC GARDENS OR BSI.
I am so fed up of this European culture. They all will bring their own
friends into the loop and create something repetitive.
OK, just for the sake of checking I thought of looking into this and
randomly first genus to check came into my mind was Gastrochilus. So I
searched for it and it is missing. So I searched for Geodorum. I appears.
Now WFO says 12 species ; KEW CHECKLIST says 7 species; PLANT LIST says 12
species.
I pick up the top name that is, Geodorum appendiculatum. I find much more
information still on the Plant List and Kew Checklist than on WFO. WFO
doesnt even give full author citations. ITS A SHAME.
No one in the world will cite a species name like this, "Geodorum
appendiculatum Griff. Calcutta J. Nat. Hist."
On the bibliography it gives a link which doesnt work.
I understand, I am too fussy, and may be by 2020 they will bring it to
higher standards. But right now, in the current state, I dont recommend
anyone to use WFO.
I see one plus point that there is an option for people to join and so I
highly recommends experts like Gurcharan sir and Ritesh to join this. I am
sure I am skipping names of many other experts. It would give us an upper
hand to correct the taxonomy of things if and when needed.
Thanks and regards
Pankaj

[efloraofindia:305777] Re: Prosthechea radiata (Lindl.) W.E.Higgins

2018-09-25 Thread Dr Pankaj Kumar
Respected Usha mam
Thats a very interesting point of pollen swabbing and there is a reason for
that.
You know if you cut plants, steal them and bring them to your place, it is
certainly illegal and risky in the sense that people can see you carrying
plants outside their natural habitat.
So, some people who already own plants at their garden or nursery, they
take pollen swabs to pollinate their privately owned plant with flowers or
they just pollinate two plants in the wild to collect fruits later on. I
know some people do such things in here too. In one way it is good if
fruits are produced on the wild plants. But its not good if all fruits are
collect later on. Secondly, this is not a natural process afterall
Imagine carrying a cutout from plant or carrying a cotton ear bud pollen
swab. No one will ever understand that ear bud has the ear dirt on it or
pollen :)
Also, in some countries (many countries but not india), it is allowed to
carry seeds. Even CITES permit is not needed for seeds.
Thanks and regards

Very beautiful.
One of the late flowering orchids during monsoon and so many people miss

Very beautiful.
Very peculiar stigmatic process which itself looks like a sword too.
Thanks a lot for sharing.

It is Cymbidium lowianum but not sure if it is the normal plant or just
variant or hybrid.
If I have to pick one option then I would say if this plant is collected
from wild then definitely a variant of Cymbidium lowianum.

Frankly, I have no idea about hybrids. But when I searched Cymbidium Moon
'Green Pastures' on google, something like this appeared:
https://www.ebay.com/itm/Cymbidium-Moon-Green-Pastures-orchid-plant-/332493063526
And it doesnt match to your plant. At the same time, I have no idea if the
name on my link is correct.
Orchids have more than 100,000 registered hybrids, I can only reach till
genus sometimes not even that, as now a days even tri-generic hybrids are
available.

If you agree to the link then according to Dr. Chadwell this should be Primula

time under the snow.
Please check.

[efloraofindia:286872] Re: WHY DOES DRY 'SARKANDA' WILD GROWTH OF SHIVALIK FOOTHILLS, PUNJAB, HARBOUR AN INCENDIARY QUALITY?

2018-01-24 Thread Dr Pankaj Kumar
It is a very simple way of understanding. Anything to catch fire easily
needs to be heated up to a particular temperature so that it will ignite.
Grasses have thin cylindrical stems and hence easy to heat up when dry, in
