Not sure. But few days back when I was cleaning my inbox for space, I saw a
mail written by Gurucharanji. I n that specifically I remember the purple
spots on leaf were mentioned.
I had already deleted the mail.
But latter I saw this flower, first and after a few rain shower it covered
many places. Then when I took the pictures I realized that this should be
the same plant discussed on eflora.
sps I don't remember.
One more sps of Oxalis also I have clicked with pink flowers. Will send

Re: Fwd: [efloraofindia:159220] what produces double flower ???

2013-07-03 Thread Madhuri Pejaver
Dear Surjit ji,
Thank you so much for making me think.
Ok now our flowers of Crinum. Basically as you have observed the stamens are
not sacrificed. But if you recollect Crinum has 6 petals and 6 stamens. In our
flower the way petals are doubled even stamens are also doubled. They are 12 in
number. Hence it is the case of Poliploidy.
I forgot to mention one part, such aberrations can occur naturally as well as
can be created artificially. The tissue culture in artificial hybridization
plays a important part.
Thanks again.

Good morning Madam

Thank you very much for this elaborate lesson on mutation and chromosomal
aberration.

Since the flower in
https://groups.google.com/forum/#!msg/indiantreepix/7-kRSVOxAMQ/sDatK69AGYAJ
had not been resulted out of sacrificing stamens (as have been explained in
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Double-flowered#Genetics_of_double-flower_mutations),
i think the abnormality lies in tissue differentiation due to certain changes
in gene expressions, rather than a polyploidy condition.

Regards,

surajit

On Wed, Jul 3, 2013 at 12:51 AM, Madhuri Pejaver formpeja...@yahoo.com wrote:

Dear Gargji and Surjitji,
Thanks for the querry.
First when the word Mutation got coined it was for the modification of similar
nature in plant Oenothera lamarkiana. In this the leaves and flowers of the
plant was suddenly observed to be larger on one branch of the plant. There was
no indication of such change prior when it was visible. Hence Hugo de varies
called it as Mutation which means sudden change without any indication in the
previous generation.
Latter when the structure of gene was studied and is known the changes which
occur at gene level are called as Mutation. While the changes which occur in
numerical form or structural form of chromosomes are called as chromosomal
aberrations.
Accordingly the actual discovery of mutation also was turned out to be
chromosomal aberration. When the change occurs at gene level it is called as
mutation. eg diseases like Thalasemia, hole in the septum of heart, or such
are examples of point mutations. Not able to recollect the examples in plants.
But if such changes occur in the reproductive cells/germinal cells they are
passed to the gametes and then to the next generation. But if the changes
occur in somatic cells then they are not passed to future generation.
Thus after the discovery of genes the chromosomal aberrations and the
mutations are differentiated. The polyploidy thus falls under Chromosomal
aberrations.

Sir,

This is related to earlier discussion -

and part thereof -
https://groups.google.com/forum/?hl=en#!topic/indiantreepix/WacK5j7fs1g.

It seems to me that two flowers (Crinum latifolium) fused together!

Why?

Polyploidy, as had been explained in the above threads?

Or, was it mutation in normal diploid cells?

I tried to find but

Polyploidy can result various alterations -

Re: Fwd: [efloraofindia:159147] what produces double flower ???

2013-07-02 Thread Madhuri Pejaver
When the change occurs at gene level it is called as
mutation. eg diseases like Thalasemia, hole in the septum of heart, or such are
examples of point mutations. Not able to recollect the examples in plants. But
if such changes occur in the reproductive cells/germinal cells they are passed
to the gametes and then to the next generation. But if the changes occur in
somatic cells then they are not passed to future generation.
Thus after the discovery of genes the chromosomal aberrations and the mutations
are differentiated. The polyploidy thus falls under Chromosomal aberrations.

Sir,

This is related to earlier discussion -

and part thereof -
https://groups.google.com/forum/?hl=en#!topic/indiantreepix/WacK5j7fs1g.

It seems to me that two flowers (Crinum latifolium) fused together!

Why?

Polyploidy, as had been explained in the above threads?

Or, was it mutation in normal diploid cells?

I tried to find but

Polyploidy can result various alterations -

Really a good term. Can be used for more than 50% on eflora. They contribute to
a great extent by providing the photographs from all over India, either taken
the photos deliberately by scanning the areas or taken at places where they
visit or both.
In last 5 years I could see the plants all over the world without going
anywhere and our expert scientists could identify atleast 75% of them.
So long live citizen scientists and expert scientists.

Dear Members,

Let me brief about the origin of Kas name. Kas village is few km ahead of
Kas Plateau. The name of village comes from a tree Elaeocarpus glandulosus
which is found in that region. Locally this tree is known as Kasa or Kasav
(tortoise). Long vowels are phonetically written as Kás and not as 'Kaas'.
The local names of Elaecarpus glandulosus are written in T. Cooke's flora
as *Kásav, **Kásá*. It is possible that even IUCN may have spelled it as
Kaas after various websites. 'Kas' may stand as 'odd man out' but websites
need not be considered as authentic. Regards,

Subject: Fw: Taxonomic monograph on Impatiens of Western Ghats
 To: Dinesh Valke dinesh.va...@gmail.com

 Dear Sri. Dinesh Valke,

Finally, my book on “*Taxonomic Monograph on Impatiens L.
(Balsaminaceae) of Western Ghats – the key genus for endemism*” has
arrived from the press. This book provides a taxonomic treatment of 106
species and 13 infra-specific taxa including 12 additional new species and
6 new varieties of wild balsams described from Western Ghats. Elaborate
keys are provided to all the taxa falling under seven Sections. Besides
detailed taxonomic treatment, the book also provides information on pollen
and seed morphological characters, chromosome numbers, embryo sac type and
special anatomical characters, if any, which are shown to be reliable tool
for correct identification of species in *Impatiens*. This kind of
taxonomic treatment based on both macro-morphological and
micro-morphological characters was very much required in this genus.
This book embodies over 150 colour plates. Each plate is
dedicated to one species comprising both macro–morphological and
micro-morphological characters such as habit, dissected flower parts,
fruits, seeds, seed hair morphology, pollen morphology, chromosome numbers
and in some cases anatomical and embryo sac types. The chromosome
numbers have been reported for 76 species, including satellite taxa of
which 37 are fresh counts and chromosome numbers of 25 species are first
reports. Nearly 95 species have been palynologically analysed, out of
which pollen morphology of 88 species is done exclusively by the author
including 21 first reports. Very interesting seed hair morphological
characters which have great taxonomic value in classifying *Impatiens*have
been reported for the first time in most of the brown seeded species
in the Sections: ‘Scapigerae’, ‘Microsepalae’, ‘Tomentosae’,
‘Sub-umbellatae’ and ‘Racemosae’. Taxonomic note is provided under each
 species discussing about its inter-relationships.
*Impatiens* species in Western Ghats are categorized for
their Threat Status as per IUCN Red List Categories and Criteria (Version
3.1 of 2001). Out of 106 species of *Impatiens* in Western Ghats, 103
species are endemic to peninsular India, about 37 species (including
varieties) fall under the Category of critically endangered, about 36
species under the category of endangered and 17 species under vulnerable
status. Urgent measures are suggested to protect their habitats in
 Western Ghats.
*Dr. R. Raghavendra Rao, *INSA Hon. Scientist, a renowned
taxonomist, has provided the foreword. The book is dedicated to *Sir.
J.D. Hooker* who dedicated his last 11 years for classifying world
species of *Impatiens*. The book is priced at *INR.4990/-* (*USD200/-*),
 excluding packing and mailing charges.
I hope you would recommend this book to your esteemed
institution for the benefit of botanists interested in the field of
taxonomy and biosystematics, ecology, phytogeography, evolution,
palynology, cytology, anatomy and embryology of endemic and endangered
flowering plant species. Please find attached a brochure showing the
cover page, summary of work and an ORDER FORM.
 Thanking you,
 With best wishes and regards,
 Dr. V.Bhaskar

Thanks! Indeed looks like that! What about the droplet phenomenon? That was

After that, I myself tried it and experienced it too. If you stand beneath

in this season). May be a rather common phenomenon associated with some
other trees too; can someone tell me about it? Wish I could verify the

2012-04-27 Thread Madhuri Pejaver
If the leaflet has waxy coating according to me the droplets won't stay on
leaf, instead will fall down. Since they will fall as soon as formed will
automatically be smaller in size. Similarly since more stomata are on the lower
surface of leaf, and it being cooler than upper surface water droplets might be
getting formed. And with waxy leadlet and being on lowerside the droplets by
force of gravity might be falling off.
The way I said I am not a botanist, but have experienced it under cashew tree
too. And have heard occuring in other plants also.

Subject: [efloraofindia:112206] Achyranthes based Formulations in Indian
 Traditional Healing

Dear Group Members,

Achyranthes aspera is a reputed medicinal herb since time immemorial.
I am documenting Traditional Medicinal Knowledge about this herb since year
1990. I interacted with over 20,000 Traditional Healers from different
parts of India in last 22 years. Initial surveys resulted in 150,000
Formulations. Most of the Formulations are not reported in ancient as well
as modern literature.

I am Homoeopath by education and in Homoepathy, diseases are dealt in
detail. In our Kent's Repertory thousands of symptoms are mentioned.

As beginner, I conducted sample surveys with the help of questionnaire.
This approach was good for publication of papers but worst in getting true
information.

Today in the world thousands of papers are there on Ethnobotany with same
approach. Papers report about the herb useful in Malaria but it is
difficult to treat the patients in ground with this information.
Homoeopathy describes thousands of symptoms of Malaria and its
complications.

I used my study of Homeopathy to the surveys. Vertigo after sexual
excess- I asked this key symptom in different languages to thousands of
Traditional Healers. In 22 years I got information about thousands of
formulations for this key symptom. You can imagine the quantum of
information, when thousands of such symptoms are presented among the
Healers for their comments.

I am talking about only Achyranthes. There are thousands of medicinal
species used in Indian Traditional Healing.

I am trying to present these results with the help of my Medicinal Plant
Database. At first the effort is on to present the list of topics discussed
in database. Some topics discussed on Achyranthes are given in this document

http://www.scribd.com/doc/87083468/Part-One-of-Chirchita-or-Apamarg-Achyranthes-aspera-L-based-Herbal-Formulations-in-Indian-Traditional-Healing-Pankaj-Oudhia%E2%80%99s-Ethnobotanical-Surve

Today I was in local Pharmacy College for guest lecture. I talked on below
given topic for four hours.

Hymenodictyon excelsum WALL. (Type 19- As per Traditional Allelopathic
Treatment the Traditional Healers practice) and Achyranthes aspera L.
(Apamarga, Chirchita, Aghedo, Prickly Chaff Flower, Latjira) with other
Herbal Ingredients (Allelopathically Enriched): Research Documents from
Pankaj Oudhia’s Medicinal Plants Database (Traditional Knowledge Database)
on use of Indigenous Herbal Medicines (Herbal Formulations) for Rectum-
coldness in anus .

Students were keen to know more and assured that they will work on this
topic.

These Traditional Formulations are valuable asset of our country.
Unfortunately most of these formulations are not in famous TKDL as neither
the ancient nor the modern researchers documented the Traditional Knowledge
in this way.

As you know, I have taken not a single paisa from anyone to document this
knowledge in 22 years. From each topic one full length paper can be
prepared and published in hi-impact factor journal but it is practically
not possible to publish thousands of papers. Best way is to give it as gift
to young generation so that they can preserve and enrich it for future.

If you are interested please keep visiting

This common exotic tree is seen with only falcategreen veinless phyllodes

but they are seen only in sapling stage. Pinnae2, 2-5 cm, deciduous;
leafletsopposite, 6-10, sessile, oblong, 5-8 mm; petiole 5-8 mm, modifying
and elongating to a phyllode 10-15 cm long. Scar of fallen pinnae can be
seen at the rounded apex of the phyllode. Regards, Shrikant Ingalhalikar

The Lodha (tribals from West bengal, Orissa, Assam) bridegroom has to get
married to a mango tree before he can marry his bride.
Similarly a girl has to marry a mahua tree

During the ceremony, the women sing:

The bride will be married to the mahua tree
The groom will be married to the mango
How happy will the wedding be

The groom's name on the mango leaf
The bride's name on the mahua leaf
How happy will the wedding be.

Heritage trees have history in their branches
 Mysore, Feb 24,2012, DHNS:

 Conservation

*T R Sathish Kumar chronicles the history and efforts of locals to
protect a 260-year-old banyan tree on Mysore-T Narsipur road.*

[image: Precious: The banyan tree on Mysore - T Narsipur road. DH photos]All
natural resources, flora and fauna we enjoy today actually belong to future
generations. We are mere custodians. So we have the responsibility of
conserving and handing them over to future generations, according to Hindu
culture. Spiritually, all natural resources and nature was worshipped in
original form as per Vedic traditions. There was no idol worship.

Most of the conservation of natural resources and nature has been possible
due to religious, spiritual and cultural traditions followed by human
beings over generations. Where law failed in the process of conservation,
traditions succeeded – be it the so called civilized or tribal.

A banyan tree at Chikkahalli, off Mysore-Tirumakudlu Narsipur road, is
over 260 years old and is being protected by villagers religiously. To
augment their efforts, the Paramparika Vruksha Rakshana Samiti, a local
organisation that comprises 30 plus environment enthusiasts in Mysore, has
been involved in protection of heritage trees. The samiti identified 10
trees in the vicinity of the city as ‘heritage trees’ for protection and
conservation, and the banyan tree at Chikkahalli was the first to be
identified. It has also chalked out a plan to establish a ‘tree park’ at
 Chikkahalli.

Some of the trees identified by the samiti have also been accepted by the
state government as heritage trees. Incidentally, it was following the
samiti’s representation to the Western Ghats Task Force that the government
took steps to identify and conserve trees. Important among the samiti’s
 list of ten trees are:

The red silk cotton tree (Bombax Ceiba or Kempu Boorugada Mara, originally
from Africa) at Curzon Park abutting the Mysore Palace -- the sapling of
which was planted by Lord Curzon, viceroy and governor-general of India, in
1900;The peepal tree at Manasagangotri, which is 160 years old. It is
learnt that it was worshipped by the members of the Mysore royal family –
the Wadiyars. It was in the vicinity of Jayalakshmi Vilas Mansion,
constructed for Jayalakshmi, sister of Maharaja Nalwadi Krishnaraja
 Wadiyar. It is the second tree the committee tagged ‘heritage’;

The 130-year-old tamarind tree (tamarindus indica) located near the
 horticulture department, University of Mysore;

An old ber tree (zizybhus jujuba) located on the premises of Tamil Sangham
on Vani Vilasa road. Although a big branch of this tree has broken, it is
 still green;

A 100-year-old jajuba tree in the compound of Government Senior Primary
School, opposite RTO Circle in Chamundipuram. Besides, two more trees of
over 120 years are located on the premises of two private houses.
 *
 Heritage trees*

According to the list released by the Western Ghats Task Force, those
labeled heritage trees are: Adansonia digitata-Malvaceae in Bijapur taluk,
600 years old; Adansonia digitata-Malvaceae in Bijapur taluk, 359 years
old; Tamarindus Indica (tamarind) in Devarahipparagi of Bijapur - 883 years
old; Azadirachta Indica (Bevu) at T Venkatapura in Chikkaballapur district
200 years old; Ficus Begalensis (Alada mara) in Chickkahalli in Mysore
taluk - 260 years old; Ficus Religiosa (peepal) at Manasagangothri, Mysore
 - 160 years old; Kempu boorga mara, Palace Gate, Mysore - 130 years old;
 Ficus Bengalensis (Doddalada mara) - Kethohalli, Bangalore, 400 years old;
Araucaria cooki - Lalbagh, 140 years old; Pilali (Ficus Micro Corpus) - in
Banavasi of Shimoga district - 400 years old. It is noteworthy that three
trees from Mysore find place in the list. The banyan tree situated near
Varuna Tank on T Narasipur road, 12 km from Mysore and hardly five km from
Lalitha Mahal Palace, stands tall and majestic on a large plain field,
covering an area of more than an acre. It has a pleasant symmetry, its
trunks look stolid and its leaves glow with health.

 *Ramp up the tree*

A branch almost touches the ground and makes climbing up the tree
effortless. It looks like a ramp up the tree.

Mummadi Krishnaraja Wodeyar’s wife Devarajammanni built the tank in 1828.
She got Madeshwara Temple constructed on the banks and ensured that some
land was granted for the temple maintenance. People from neighbouring
villages use parts of this tree to treat various ailments. Many birds feed
on its fruits. The leaves of this tree

Re: [efloraofindia:106454] Botanist or non-botanist

2012-02-04 Thread Madhuri Pejaver
Dear Rajesh
I can understand the agony through which the words have come here. But what you
are talking is about personal attitude of the people with whom you are
interacting. That too educated class. Don't you know or have havnt you faced
this attitude in any field you go? Why only wildlife?
Hence why waste time and energy in thinking about people who are of no use to
you? Why convert your positive energy into negative energy and then spend some
more to balance the depot of positive energy again?
Interact wildly. Those who have faith in you will come with you unconditional.
They are jewels. Treasure them. Forget about the coal pieces left behind. They
were not for you. Hunt for more jewels.
Best luck
Madhuri

Subject: [efloraofindia:106439] Botanist or non-botanist

Dear eFI members,

From last few days, I have started feeling the sense of inferiority. I
wonder what is the reason adn where this sense would lead me to? This is
beyond a doubt that I have generated a keen liking of flora from last
couple of years. And day by day it grows many folded. The more I read or
study or observe, more I am getting attracted towards it.

But the story is not happy ending.

I am consulting people for my project (Matheran bio-diversity
documentation) and seeking for their suggestions and advices on how the
project can be better documented.

Sometimes, people from different wildlife background response to my emails
and FB updates and show their interest in working with the team on the said
project.

I have a team which includes people from the background and people from
not-so-wildlife-related-background, which includes me. When I intercat with
people on the subject, I am always questioned about my background. And when
I honestly tell them there is change of attitude or perception in another
persons mind, instantly.

That person might have entertained me or have had given me his/her precious
time for conversation and that sense of interaction or dialogues goes
missing in the second part of this real time story, when he or she realise
that I am from not-wildlife-related-background.

Now, my question to the academics, here is, does it matter? Or is
it necessary to interact only if you have M. Sc or Ph. D with your name?

I am not questioning my credentials or of anyone who is not from the
background. But his or her (the person, studying wildlife; without
background) interest or dedication or commitment has got no count, among
the so called `elite educationalists`.
