 *Trochetiopsis ebenus *Cronk, Edinburgh J. Bot. 52: 210 1995.

 Common name: *Saint Helena ebony*

Plant endemic to the island of Saint Helena in the southern Atlantic
Ocean. Saint Helena ebony is now critically endangered in the wild. It was
assumed to be extinct till two bushes were discovered in 1980. From these
two bushes many thousands of specimens have been propagated by seed and
vegative propagation. These represent a small, and perhaps atypical,
representation of the former variability of the species.
A low spreading shrub with horizontal stems; leaves ovate and
sub-cordate, about 7 cm long, dark green with brown hairs beneath; flowers
 about 7-8 cm across, white aging to pink; epicalyx of 3 triangular segments;
staminal column reddish purplish brown with 5 ligulate staminodes of the
same colour, surrounded by 5 stamens. The filaments and pollen of the
 stamens are orange.

 Dear All,

This herbaceous plant was shot from a roadside place in Panipat, in
September 2010. It was uploaded in another thread and eventually got mixed
up, not to be found again. I now think that being Malvaceae week, this is
apt time to re-upload this plant. The fruit closely resembles Ladies' Finger
but is smaller and quite rough.

I hope I will find out the correct identity for this specimen.

Hi Aloke Ji.
Are you sure that these are from a same plant? I think the
the cordate leaf is from different plant and the moss like
one is separate.

 Malvaceae week 0905 - 9112011 UD 032 Pterygota alata and 033 Pterygota
 alata
 var. irregularis

  Dear ALL:

Submitting an interesting tree and its variant …

 Family: Malvaceae

 Subfamily: Sterculioideae

 Genus:Pterygota

 Species 1: Pterygotaalata

  2: Pterygota alata var. irregularis

These trees grow very tall, have the typical sterculoid leaves… and both
develop the seed pod that’s called the Boddha’s coconut …

#1: , the regular p. alata happens to be deciduous….looses all its
leaves, being the tallest it provides a look out perch for the vultures…

After some years of dwindling number they had disappeared for a few years…
reappearing to nest in the victoria memorial gardens in Kolkata… and
 vicinity…

And they used to perch on three pterygota alata trees we have there… we
use to go and count through the seacon.. to assure ourselves that they were
 there to stay…

They are in figure 6 and 7… towards end of spring in April.

#2 : The most interesting Pterygota is the PAGLA gachh… or the mad
tree… so called because None of its leaves match each other, each one is
 different…

And its not deciduous… you’ll notice in the pictures that 20 percent or so
leaves are turning brown… ready to fall…

These digital pics are from 2007 fig 1, 2) and 2011 (fig 3 and 4) all
from the Hort gardens… see the label /Placard has changed… and fig number 5
is from Kolkata Bot G, beginning of summer each.

 enjoy, Usha di

Malvaceae week 0905 9112011 UD 024 Brachichiton acerifolius

 Dear All:

 Family: Malvaceae

 Genus: Brachychiton

 Species: B. acerifolius

This also called Illawarra flame tree, is from Australia,

But I found it in Sandiego, Souther California , driving past park…
could stop only for a few seconds… and grabbed these pictures… came home
took me a while to track down what it was.. this intensely crimson tree is
not so common… looking through images of hundreds of red flowered tree
 yielded results… it’s a Brachychiton acerifolius… the story ended
there, I had a beautiful curiosity on my hands, so what… but then I joined
eflora … and one day Mr Raman submitted one to ID from Bangalore… lo
And he even sent me some seeds.. I have planted 6 of these , will update
when I have something to show …

In the mean time the thread that helped me /us to see that it also grows
 in India is here:
 http://groups.google.com/group/indiantreepix/browse_thread/thread/f03d01e57c2c8baf/6d2edcf81d8b4801?#6d2edcf81d8b4801

Even in Australia I have been told that its widely cultivated… in
parks….and in San Diego does not seem to have been invasive so far… not seen
any reports to suggest it is..

 Enjoy

Could not resist showing off my bhidis we managed to grow in short growing

Such season is very short up north, only starts in late june, and ends in

Dear H.S Ji.
I appreciate your knowledge in plant but I think your way of reciprocating
to senior colleagues of the group is not quite O.K for me. In scientific
community
if you are vehemently protesting some ideas then you should have a strong
evidence
for it. It not us who makes these nomenclatural changes but the credit goes
to ICBN.
Kosteletzkya vitifolia (L.) M.R.Almeida N.Patil J. Bombay Nat. Hist. Soc.

is an unresolved name the reason for it is the absence of basionym in the
publication.
Hence, the new nomenclatural change doesn't make any effect and the old name
or the
basionym i.e. Hibiscus vitifolius L. stays as the the legitimate name.

This what ICBN Vienna Code 2006 Article 33.5 states

33.5. For names published on or after 1 January 1953, errors in the
citation of the basionym or replaced synonym, including incorrect author
citation (Art. 46 http://ibot.sav.sk/icbn/frameset/0050Ch4Sec3a046.htm),
but not omissions (Art.
33.4http://ibot.sav.sk/icbn/frameset/0037Ch4Sec2a033.htm#33.4.),
do not preclude valid publication of a new combination, new generic name
with a basionym, or nomen novum.

According to my information the common tulsi plant, the Sacred basil or
holy basil, botanically Ocimum tenuiflorum L.(syn: O. sanctum L.) is called
Krishna tulsi. In fact two types of plants are known for this species: one
with green leaves and stem is Sri Tulsi and one with purple leaves and stems
as Krishna Tulsi. The essential oil has antibacterial and mosquito repellent
properties, leaves used in catarrah, expectorant, in bronchitis , malarial
 fevers, cutaneous diseases and ringworms.

Ram tulsi (also known as ban tulsi) is Ocimum gratissimum, the shrubby
tulsi, having much more stronger scent and often planted as mosquito
repellent. used as relief of ear-ache, tooth-ache, also used in cough
mixtures. Herb also used in aromatic baths and fumigations for rheumatism
 and paralysis.

Its a KEW and Missouri Botanical Garden joint venture... both places

on basis of percentage acceptability, which I thought was very
 honest

MOST OF US including you mr. HS will do well to start following the

then... BASIC RESEARCH HAS its place...
let the professors of BOTANY and Taxonomy figure out and publish...

I am not completely aware of the perfect resason for the anomaly.
I dont think its due to an insertion of mutational gene by the horti-

abnormality. I am attaching a very olf paper from 1947 which deals
with similar kinds of abnormality in Hibiscus esculentus (lady's

 Species Hibiscus rosa chinensis, YELLOW

I am sending this in to ask what is this weird set of petals in this
otherwise normal five petalled hibiscus I bought.. about 3-4 weeks into
being on my balcony this flower appeared... only one of this weird kind
... have had five or six similar ones since then... all were like the
 normal
first flower picture is included of the first normal one...

Any ideas??? Any thing I can do to further examine this phenomenon?
 Is it common?

 etc etc... have many questions...

 Thanks
