[efloraofindia:459160] Re: Aal Morinda citrifolia and Kotpad Textiles

2023-12-08 Thread Vinay Thite
In this communication Aal is referred as *Morinda citrifolia*. I feel
experts should check the veracity of this.
AL is referred as *Morinda coreia* syn. *Morinda tinctoria *in the book
FIELD GUIDE to the common trees of India by P. V. Bole and Yogini Vaghani.
The species name tinctoria suggests that dye is obtained from this tree.
Kotpad Textiles use this dye.
The site related to Kotpad Textiles
(https://artsandculture.google.com/story/the-colours-and-motifs-of-kotpad-textiles-dastkari-haat-samiti/dQUh981u4j6aIg?hl=en)

also mentions erroneously aal as *Morinda citrifolia*.

I have not come across any mention of *Morinda citrifolia *yielding a dye.
Awaiting more comments from experts on this subject.

[efloraofindia:445620] Polyalthia longifolia three variations.

2023-04-09 Thread Vinay Thite
Kind attention of all the experts.

On the eflora page of Monoon longifolium there are three variations
reported.

Polyalthia longifolia var. angustifolia (branched habit with slender
spreading branches)

Polyalthia longifolia var. longifolia (branched habit with slender
spreading branches)

Polyalthia longifolia var. pendula (unbranched habit with drooping
branchlets).

Now I wonder how to differentiate between the two variations angustifolia
and longifolia. Please provide crystal clear picture on this issue. What is
the key here? is it related to leaves?

[efloraofindia:415226] Re: Names of Plants in India :: Chassalia curviflora var. ophioxyloides (Wall.) Deb & B.Krishna

2022-02-14 Thread Vinay Thite
Transliteration of names from local languages to English.
The transliteration varies depending on the person's upbringing regarding
languages.
If we do transliteration from Kannada to Devanagari it is very close. But
with English it is not the case.
ಕಾಡು ಹರುಡಪಾತಾಳ - Kaadu garudapathala - This transliteration is by South
Indian.
ಕಾಡು ಹರುಡಪಾತಾಳ - Kaadu garudapatala - This transliteration is by
Maharashtrian.
ಕಾಡು ಹರುಡಪಾತಾಳ - काडु गरुडपाताळ (But Kannadigas will pronounce it as काडु
गरुडपाताळा)
ळ and ल is often represented by same letter 'l'.
If we use standard phonetic symbols, as used in many dictionaries, this
confusion can be cleared.

भारती, आरती, रेवती is often written by South Indians as Bharathi, Aarathi,
Revathi. But Maharashtrian will write it as Bharati, Aarati, Revati.

I feel the plant in question is very close to *Conyza japonica.* Reasons 1.
Sawtoothed leaves 2. Disc florets up to 15.

I do not find other characteristics matching 1. Yellow ray florets 2.
Flowering March to September.

Sir, your comments please.

2021-12-08 Thread Vinay Thite
Malyalam name Murikoodi needs to be reconfirmed. I saw the Keralaayurvedics
site where it is mentioned as Murikoodi.
I searched on net. There is a google page in Malayalam
https://ml.wikipedia.org/wiki/മുറികൂട്ടി. It mentions the name as
മുറികൂട്ടി मुरिकूट्टि.
Flowersofindia mentions it as Malayalam: Murikooti.
I will be talking to few who have Malayalam as mother tongue to get the
correct name.

2021-11-25 Thread Vinay Thite
Many Meanings of Pascua

The Spanish word for Easter, *Pascua, *which is usually capitalized
,
 did
not always refer to the Christian holy day commemorating the Resurrection
of Christ. The word predates Christianity and originally refers to a holy
day of the ancient Hebrews. And these days, in context, it can refer to
religious holidays other than Easter, even Christmas.

In addition to holidays, the word *Pascua* can also be used in common
Spanish idiomatic expressions, like the English expression, "once in a blue
moon," translated into Spanish as, *de Pascuas a Ramos*.
