Re: [efloraofindia:76584] Re: Trinomial Names or Bi generic names

2011-08-10 Thread Balkar Arya
Thanks Sir for throwing light on the matter in detail

On Wed, Aug 10, 2011 at 9:49 AM, Gurcharan Singh singh...@gmail.com wrote:

 Yes Pankaj ji
Here is the information from my book (some things must have missed copy
 pasting from Pagemaker)

 *Names of Hybrids*
Hybridity is indicated by the use of the multiplication sign, or by the
addition of the prefix ‘notho-’ to the term denoting the rank of the taxon,
the principal ranks being nothogenus and nothospecies. A hybrid between
named taxa may be indicated by placing the multiplication sign between the
names of the taxa; the whole expression is then called a hybrid formula:
 1. Agrostis X Polypogon
 2. Agrostis stolonifera X Polypogon monspeliensis

 3. Salix aurita X S. caprea
It is usually preferable to place the names or epithets in a formula
in alphabetical order. The direction of a cross may be indicated by
including the sexual symbols ( : female;: male) in the formula,
or by placing the female parent first. If a non-alphabetical sequence is
used, its basis should be clearly indicated.
A hybrid may either be interspecific (between two species belonging to
the same genus) or intergeneric (between two species belonging to two
different genera). A binary name may be given to the interspecific hybrid or
nothospecies (if it is self-perpetuating and/or reproductively isolated) by
placing the cross sign (if mathematical sign is available it should be
placed immediately before the specific epithet, otherwise ‘x’ in lower case
may be used with a gap) before the specific epithet as in the following
cases (hybrid formula may be added within the parentheses if the parents are
 established):
  1. Salix x capreola (S. aurita X S. caprea)
or Salix Xcapreola (S. aurita X S. caprea)
  2. Rosa x odorata (R. chinensis X R. gigantea)
or Rosa Xodorata (R. chinensis X R. gigantea)
The variants of interspecific hybrids are named nothosubspecies and
nothovarieties, e.g. Salix rubens nothovar. basfordiana.
For an intergeneric hybrid, if given a distinct generic name, the name
is formed as a condensed formula by using the first part (or whole) of one
parental genus and last part (or whole) of another genus (but not the whole
of both genera). A cross sign is placed before the generic name of the
hybrid, e.g. XTriticosecale (or x Triticosecale) from Triticum and Secale,
XPyronia (or x Pyronia) from Pyrus and Cydonia, and Agropogon from Agrostis
and Polypogon.. The names may be written as under:
 1. XTriticosecale (Triticum X Secale)
 2. XPyronia (Pyrus X Cydonia)
The nothogeneric name of an intergeneric hybrid derived from four or
more genera is formed from the name of a person to which is added the
termination -ara; no such name may exceed eight syllables. Such a name is
 regarded as a condensed formula:
XPotinara (Brassavola X Cattleya X Laelia
 X Sophronitis)
The nothogeneric name of a trigeneric hybrid is either: (a) a
condensed formula in which the three names adopted for the parental genera
are combined into a single word not exceeding eight syllables, using the
whole or first part of one, followed by the whole or any part of another,
followed by the whole or last part of the third (but not the whole of all
three) and, optionally, one or two connecting vowels; or (b) a name formed
like that of a nothogenus derived from four or more genera, i.e., from a
personal name to which is added the termination -ara:
XSophrolaeliocattleya (Sophronitis X Laelia X Cattleya)
When a nothogeneric name is formed from the name of a person by adding
the termination -ara, that person should preferably be a collector, grower,
 or student of the group.
A binomial for the intergeneric hybrid may similarly be written as under:
XAgropogon lutosus (Agrostis stolonifera X Polypogon monspeliensis)

It is important to note that a binomial for an interspecific hybrid has a
cross before the specific epithet, whereas in an intergeneric hybrid, it is
before the generic name. Since the names of nothogenera and nothotaxa with
the rank of a subdivision of a genus are condensed formulae or treated as
such, they do not have types.
Since the name of a nothotaxon at the rank of species or below has a
type, statements of parentage play a secondary part in determining the
 application of the name.
The grafts between two species are indicated by a plus sign between two
grafted species as, for example, Rosa webbiana + R. floribunda.

2011-08-10 Thread Ushadi micromini
Dear Balkar ji:
New to my eyes, though my ears had heard about this...

My Dad's wood furniture polish guy had talked of some tree whose
leaves were used by his father for the final poilsh on small
 delicate ornamental pieces...

I /we thought he was shooting the breeze and pulling our legs
that day many years ago... he said it was called Sheora...
he talked of some other leaves that were also quite rough like
fine sandpaper... I wish I had written down the list...
such memories are priceless... little did I know..
It had taken me awhile to track down that bengali name,
and then discovered he was not being funny, he was in the earnest...
I had found it in Tinkodi Ghosh’s Bonaushadhi book ..

I had forgotten that episode..

Untill today, I googled your tree name ..
and the story floated up from deep recesses of the memory bank...

MY Question: did you get to feel the surface of the leaves?
is it really rough enough to be used as polishing material?

[efloraofindia:76607] Nature Trail to Matheran (Sunday, August 21 · 7:30am - 6:30pm)

2011-08-10 Thread Rajesh Sachdev
Nestled on the outer spur of Sahyadri (Western Ghats), Matheran is nature
lover`s paradise. This evergreen forest, near Mumbai, is one of the rich
bio-diversity spot. Monsoon brings additional diffusion of floral and faunal
life on this hill station. In terms of guaranteed sightings, nothing could
be promised, in this rainy season. But, presence of Indian Giant Squirrel,
Common Langoor, Green Vine Snake, Bamboo Pit Viper, White Cheeked Barbet,
Orange Headed Thrush, White Rumped Shama, Changeable Hawk Eagle, Crested
Serpent Eagle, Red Whiskered Bulbul, Blue Oakleaf, Malabar Spotted Flat,
Blue Mormon, Yamfly, Monkey puzzle, Grass Demon, Chestnut Bob and several
floral species (Endemic to the Sahyadri Konkan) have been observed and
recorded here.
To witness the rich flora and fauna of this hill station, a nature trail is
organised and scheduled on Sunday 21st August, 2011. The trail is actually a
down-trek expedition, literally 12-15 Kms of walk on Matheran-Neral toy
train route. The trail is self observe and self identify oriented programme.
Participants would have to bring their own supply of food and water
suffieceint enough for good 10 hours. Wear camouflaged, full sleeves
T-shirt/Shirt and trouser (no three-forths or short pyjama) with good
gripped trekking shoe.
No trek fee, but to bear your own expenses, likely to be less than 200 Rs.
But don’t forget to carry rain cover (for you and your camera/rucksack),
mosquito repellent and umbrella. Those willing to take bath, under the water
fall, can bring their swim shorts and towel. The bath, under the waterfall,
would be only permitted during the breaks and in isolation from the rest of
group. Smoking during the trail would be deemed as an offence.
The event is open to all (based on the number of participant, could be
divided in groups) and all are invited. Do forward it to anyone, whom you
feel, has liking of WILD WORLD. But, RSVP on facebook event is must.
Schedule of the trail :-
Reach Neral station by 7.30 AM ((Don’t forget to buy your return train
ticket))
Reach at Dastoori naka (by taxi) at 8.00 AM
Start the trail at 08.30AM
First break at 11.00 AM
Second break at 02.00 PM
Final Break at 5.00 PM
Reach Neral Station 06.30 PM
Train for Mumbai at 07.00PM

Some information from Wikipedia.
*Veronica serpyllifolia* (thymeleaf or thyme-leaved speedwell) is a
perennial flowering plant in the plantain family. It can be found on most
continents.

The leaves are oval, borne on creeping stems. Roots grow from leaf axils.

The flowers are blue, or white with blue or purple stripes, in racemes on
upright stems.

The seeds are tiny and disk-shaped, borne in two-lobed pods.

Strangely GRIN does not seem to be agreeing with Kew Plant List. Although
Kew Plant list treats this simply as synonym of C. argentea, GRIN (last
updated in May, 2011) treats it as Celosia argentea var. cristata.
