Re: I7K DVDROM drive for CDRW ?
I just got a call from Dell Tech support today regarding reading CD-RW on the Torisan DVD drive, and they said it will work... you just need to go to the Adaptec web site and download something called a UDF reader (it's software). They said once this is properly installed, you should be able to read a closed CD-RW on your DVD drives. I haven't tried it yet, but it's next on my to-do list! Dell's Sales team assured me that it would read CD-RW before I bought the computer! Oh well! Hope this helps! Yes, normally all the 2nd generation DVD drive should read CDRW (Creative Labs DVD Encore does it well, why not matsushita ones). db Can anyone offer anything further on the subject of reading CD-RWs, in my case, on Matsushita DVD-ROM SR-8171?... I am trying and failing. Anyone had any luck w/ this? Does it make sense to search for new and improved drivers? (I tried System Properties Device Manager ... Update Driver ... Microsoft Windows Update, but crashed the program.) Question: Linux users, I am trying to get Linux to work on my Inspiron 7000. I am very new at this and need to know how to untar a program or binary file. When I try to do it, it tells me that it does not look like a tar file. Another thing is that when I tried to copy the XF86Config file from the web page that is suppose to work with my laptop it tells me it is unreadable. Re: Tar
Note, it sounds to me like you are trying to install Xfree. If this is the case these files are compressed and tarred(sp?). Anyway, if that is what you are trying to do getting the extract utility will make your life MUCH easier. Also, if that is what you are doing read the readme file, it lists all the files you should be downloading for an installation. RE: Tar
Reading further it is clear that you are installing Xfree. If you are new to this whole thing I would do the following, not because it is quick but because it is informative. 1. Go to the Xfree web site and read the relevant man pages, you can also get the most recent files there. 2. When you select the correct library lib6 or lib5 read the list of files to download. 3. Initially set up the VGA server. At least on the current Xfree code it works fine (on an I7K). This will get you through a basic Xfree install. It is something you are likely to need to do again so it is good practice. Also, there are a minimal set of unknowns in the previous procedure. Once you have done this you can go on to load patches, new kernels, whatever you want to try and achieve a usable resolution. Note if you have an I3K.x then this is all irrelevant. I would imagine that is not what you have since X would have worked out of the box with RedHat. Re: Tar
My guess is that you're trying to get the driver that will let you get 1024 resolution in XFree for your 15" monitor? That's what I've had to do. How're you downloading the files? From Navigator? FTP? It seems like the way they were downloaded is not good. Did you download as ascii? ---"Hanczaruk, Mark" [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: Question: Linux users, I am trying to get Linux to work on my Inspiron 7000.
