[IRCA] KFIR-720 ETC.

2007-09-11 Thread Pete Taylor
Spent the weekend in Redmond, OR and KFIR was OK using the 2010 and
the Palomar loop. However, I don't have anything to compare it with
so can't really say they are now 10kw vs. their previous 1kw.

This is a nice DX area with the likes of KFAQ-1170 (never heard in
Tacoma), WCCO-830 (heard once), WBAP, KRLD popping in. Didn't really
have a chance to grasp the whole band as it got in to the 30s at
night and twas a little nippy out on the deck. Locally at night,
KRCO-690 was marginal in Redmond thanks to CBU and the XE; KBND-1110
was OK; KICE-940 was non-existent. I haven't seen the pattern for the
new 900kHz station (50kw day, 1+kw at night) in Bend but the growth
area is off of Hwy. 97 so to be effective it has to cover Prineville,
Madras and Redmond as well as Bend. Most of the FMs cover all the
markets either directly or with translators. There is also a new
Class IV station planned for Bend (1400 I think). Very good beacon
(LW) reception noted as well.

[IRCA] KAST Astoria going IBOC?

2007-09-11 Thread Patrick Martin
I was looking through the new NRC log tonight under IBOC stations and I
about fell out of my chair when I noticed that KAST 1370 Astoria listed
as IBOC. I would be really surprised as they do not have much of a
budget and their transmitter is older. Wishfull thinking? I am going
over to KAST tomorrow to resent the CE with one of Scott Fybush's
calendars, thanking Tom Freel for the great tour of New NW BCers at the
2006 IRCA convention. The cover of Scott's great calendar is the KAST
site. KAST was going to have an X Band station on 1700 (KCHT) that never
materialized, so who knows, but IBOC in Clatsop County on AM? Also
1570 was supposed to be a 50 KW station, even a CP that was never built.
But time will tell. At least the locals are low power here and rather
weak, but IBOC in Clatsop County? The West side of Kauai is looking
better all of the time.

Hi Pete,

Thanks for the interesting report from Redmond. I presume 900 Bend will
protect the NW (CKMO). KBND is a powerhouse here at night with KFAB
under or mixing. 940 is rare except at LSS. KRCO is u/CBU days and and
occ u/CBU at night. I still need to relog 1240 Redmond as the new
station. I have the old KPRB from many years back. Even visited the

[IRCA] Need Radio Disney Info

2007-09-11 Thread J.D. Stephens
Does anyone know where I can find info on the times
Radio Disney stations have local IDs and/or spots?

I've seen diagrams of such a thing in the past from
other networks/shows (Coast to Coast A.M., for
example).

They look something like a pie chart, and I think may
be called Program Wheels.

If anyone know what I'm talking about, your help would
be most appreciated.

Patrick,
As I am typing, Albany, but a more correct answer is sort of both,
hi. Some of our stuff is at the new place. I'm rather excited to
start the logbook over, plus I have a couple of acres now to mess
with outdoor antenna configurations. I haven't decided where the
shack is going to be located yet.

On another note, Pete's visit to Redmond made me think of another
David Williams who resided there and posted fairly often to this list
about two years ago. I don't think he's a member anymore, but he
sure did well from his location and was the reason for many of my
logging's from here. Do you know of his where-abouts these days?

Much poorer for Asian reception this morning as well as Far East Russian

changed their beam this way, and at 1330 the choir with apparently their

Much later with DU conditions now, 639 weak/medium with man talking in

Good morning

I got up late today so I only listned from 1255-1320. I heard carriers on 531,
558, 567, 585, 594, 603, 648, 657, 666, 675, 684, 693, 738, 747, 774, 819, 828
and 873. After I got to 873 the sun came up. I had audio on 531, 594, 774 and
774. The audio on 531 was the most interesting as I never heard any audio on
531 due to LAX-530. This morning I did not heard LAX-530 at all.

[IRCA] TPs for September 11

2007-09-11 Thread John H. Bryant
It was an oddly unsatisfying morning here with about the average
amount of audio, but nothing particularly news worthy. Conditions
seemed to favor Korea slightly over China and Japan. So far this
season, including this morning, there seem to be quite a few more
channels with multiple audio and more Chinese than has been the norm
this early in the season. Over all, it sure looks like we have a
great TP season coming up...

Good Morning,

Listened from 1205-1345 ut. Russia on 648 was in with fair audio for the first
time this season here. Best signal on the H-800 active whip. One of those
mornings when the H-800 out performed the loop Ewe on certain MW channels.
Raised the loop about 5' yesterday. It criss-crosses just under the Ewe by
about 2 inches. Using insulated wire on both antennas.
Russian long waves, 4 out of the 5 heard. Surprisingly 180 had no audio, while
234 did manage very weak audio. 180 usually one of the regulars.

153 Russia. Radio Rossii fair at 1205 with woman/man in Russian.
American Blues music in English at 1213.

189 Russia, Radio Rossii 1259 fair with Blues music.

234 Russia, Radio Rossii 1259 weak with Blues music.

279 Russia, Radio Rossii weak at 1300, pips toh.

594 Japan, JOAK could only make it to threshold at 1217. Checked
Channel numerous time during the morning.

[IRCA] Filipinos Filipinos Filipinos

All I can say is Filipinos...Filipinos Filipinos A wonderful
morning for Filipinos, the best so far this season.

531 Philippines, UNID, gal in Tagalog at 1355 9/11, lost u/JJ and 4KZ.
(PM-OR)

549Vietnam, Vov2, Home service, with gal in Vietnamese, about the
same signal as Network 1 on 675 at 1339 9/11 (PM-OR)

558Philippines, DZXL, good on top at 1349 with man with commercial
mentioning Quezon City, Metro Manila 9/11. (PM-OR)

567 Philippines, UNID, maybe DWRP, logged here before, mostly u/JJ at
1341 9/11. (PM-OR)

603 Philippines, UNID u/KK at 1347 9/11, man in Tagalog. (PM-OR)

mentioning Cebu and D-Y-H-P, soon u/jumble. (PM-OR)

675 Vietnam, Vov1, Home service, good with gal in Vietnamese at 1334
9/11. (PM-OR)

855 Philippines, Unid, never could get an ID out of this one, with
female in Tagalog at 1345 9/11, popping in rather nicely, either DZGE
Naga City or DXGO Davao City, I would guess, as those areas come in
better generally. I heard DZGE back in the mid 80s. (PM-OR)

1017 Philippines, Iloilo City, DYRP, beautiful signal, with contest or
raffle mentioning winning numbers, maybe Bingo? noted in passing several
times from 1320-1350, taking calls and many mentions of Iloilo City. I
have this one from the 80s, but always nice to hear. (PM-OR)

t1026DZARPhilippines, Quezon City, presume the source of the
soft Christian mx and woman in Tagalog, buried at times by Unid Asian,
Maybe Thai? But signal on both were not too strong at 1345 9/11. (PM-OR)

1062DZECPhilippines, Quezon City, very good with man mentioning
DZEC several times at 1340 9/11. (PM-OR)

1071 UNIDs Mix of a Filipino/Chinese (Cantonese) off and on from
1320-1410, but never could muster an ID or location of either 9/11.
(PM-OR)

1098Australia, Unid Aussie here with a discussion pgm. Had the ABC
sound, but the only ABC listed is a 200 watts one, so presume to be
unneeded 7LA or 4LG at 1348 9/11 (PM-OR)

1503 Philippines, Roxas City, DYBB good in splash at times with man
talking to gal on the phone, mentions of Roxas City and DYBB at 1343
9/11 (PM-OR)

t1512Philippines, Cebu City DYAB presume the Filipino talk at 1355
9/11, domestic splash. (PM-OR)

Those are some of the highlights. I could use a morning like this every
day! However, nothing new IDed. But it was a great morning.

Bill,

With AM band changing so much with IBOC, the noise levels, QRM from more
NSP stations, more high power, etc. It has crossed my mind to give it
all up, sell the houses, etc, and take my radio and move to the West
side of Kauai or maybe Guam. It would be easier to do as I am still on
American soil, but I would finally be rid of all the mess. I don't know
if I would, but I have sure thought a lot about it in the past year or
two. with Bob gone, what is there to keep me? I could be a locksmith
anywhere. It is a thought though. One thing for certain, I would have my
dream of being able to DX what I want to hear for the rest of my life.
And QSLs QSLs QSLs.. Most people would never consider it as they have
families, and other committments I don't have. But it is a thought.

DXpedition this winter while business is slow? Check it out!

When my high school class turned 65 (we are still a very close group)
we voted in a new class motto: If not now, WHEN? You can see the
results for me! One of our motivations is that we have started to
lose a number of classmates almost all to cancer. Is a big motivator.

That exploratory DXpedition might not be a bad way to spend a couple
of weeks in February or March.

P.S. How is your Spanish??? I bet that they could use a locksmith on
Easter Island!

[IRCA] Blooper - TPs for 9Sep07

2007-09-11 Thread cafe

Patrick and Walt filed todays DX as Sept-9, 2007 - it is 9/11 today.
My point however is -- I think we should all try and establish
a DX-Camp somewhere in Hawaii -- on the Big Island or, a Patrick
says -- Kuai. Wife and I are thinking of heading there for 10
days in October, November or December -- and I will
be hauling the Eton E1, heck or high-water...

Or - we could encourage Patrick to move to Hawaii, buy a bunch
of land and we could keep a steady stream of DXers visiting
Hawaii to keep him company - I know, for one, that I could well
be first in line.

Patrick will have friends that he never imagined having!
Go Patrick, Go!

As described by the other gents - I did a barefoot Eton E1 session
again this morning and although the band looked energized at about 1305 - 1310
UTC,
it quickly lost volume and momentum after 1315 UTC.
Still - fair audio on 584, 612, 639, 747, 756, 774, 828, 963, 972, 1143, 1287
and 1566.

With AM band changing so much with IBOC, the noise levels, QRM from more
NSP stations, more high power, etc. It has crossed my mind to give it
all up, sell the houses, etc, and take my radio and move to the West
side of Kauai or maybe Guam.

In case anyone has missed it, John Bryant's Easter Island story is

It is an awe-inspiring and, at times, amusing tale of wild adventure from
the far reaches of the Planet Earth - where anything can happen on the radio

I would have loved to see full color pictures from the story - the BW's

As far as Patrick running a DX Camp there are hunting preserves

To the group,

Unless something comes up at the last minute, I will
do a complete MW bandscan on both Thursday (9/13) and
Friday (9/14) nights this week to attempt to measure
the impact of IBOC, and will post the results on both
lists.

If I am unable to do the Thursday night scan, I will
list the the normal nighttime stations heard from my

ICF-2010 but without the use of any directional loop
antennas or longwires.

We shall see.

[IRCA] KAST 1370 IBOC update

2007-09-11 Thread Patrick Martin
I took a copy of Scott Fybush's calendar over to Tom Freel OM at KAST
1370 this morning. Scott, Tom loved it and if we want a tour in the
future, no problem, just give him a call. Always glad to do it. Tom
thought the tower sites are really cool. Tom said New NW BCer's boss
will love it too.
I took over a report I had for KKEE 1230 as I never QSL'd the new
call and I will be getting an e mail QSL as that is how they handle the
QSL requests now.
I brought up the subject of HD Radio and I mentioned I saw that KAST
AM was going HD. He looked at me and said, well maybe down the road the
FM, and New NW BCers want at least one HD in every market they have
stations in, however it would be the FM, not the AM. He said can you
imagine how hard it would be to get KAST to work with HD? It would too
involved and too expensive. As far as FM HD, they are looking into it
down the road to see if it is going to work out. I was quite pleased
to hear that, no AM HD. By the way, if any station shows an interest it
ends up on the list. The reason the AM showed may be because it is the
main money-maker here.
New NW BCers is going to moving to a new studio site behind City Hall
in Warrenton in the next couple of years though. They were going to move
down by the river in Astoria but no one wants their big satellite and
STL dishes.
So the next time we have an IRCA convention on the coast, we will
have a brand new studio set up to show off.

[IRCA] Update on verifications for KEVA 1240 kHz Evanston, WY DX Test

2007-09-11 Thread Jim Pogue
Update on verifications for KEVA 1240 kHz Evanston, WY DX Test

On Sept. 11, 2007, I had a very cordial and informative telephone
conversation with Michael Richard, organizer of the Oct. 22, 2006 DX Test
from KEVA. He apologized profusely for the delay in answering reception
reports, and explained that a very busy schedule and the demands of running
his own business have left him very little free time. Added to this, his
file of reception reports went missing during a studio move at KEVA some
time ago.
All that said, he is still interested in providing verifications to
DXers who heard the test. He promised if listeners will e-mail him, he will
verify all correct reports as soon as possible. Although he said he would go
on the honor system, I think all DXers worth their salt should resubmit
their original reports and/or audio files to Michael. The e-mail address for
reports is as before: michaelj @ vcn.com
The bottom line: resend, and be patient a little longer and the QSLs
will arrive. Thanks again to Michael for the great test, and for his
patience in dealing with those of us whose hearts still beat a little faster
when we check our mailboxes.

An article (not an ad) in the Pulitzer Prize Winning San Diego fishwrap last

What you need to keep in mind about Newfoundland is
that it is inhospitable about 240 days of the year
and the remaining 125 days are merely miserable.

If you love endless fog, driving rain more painful

[IRCA] CONFIRMED: WSLA-1560 Heard w/ WPAD Silent

2007-09-11 Thread J.D. Stephens
As a followup to my tentative report (below), I can
confirm after listening to my recording that it was
indeed daytimer WSLA-1560 which I heard this past
Friday night, from 10:30 'til well past 11 PM Central
with Sports programming. Lengthy multi-station ID
mentioned WLSA-1560 Slidell, WGSO-990, KFRA-1590,
KTIB-640 Thibodaux, a couple of FMers, and WGNO-TV.

Don't know if there's a new night-time authorization

[IRCA] Patrick's DX Heaven

2007-09-11 Thread vroomski

Good Evening,

54 miles North of Grayland, WA there is 40 acres of land for sale near the town
of Queets. The price is $119,500. Property taxes are $63.00 a year. It's
located near the ocean (yards) on a heavily forest piece of land. The acreage
is located on the Quinault Indian Reservation. Looks like the nearest AM
stations are the two in Aberdeen, WA, 42 miles as the crow flies. Below is a

Re: [IRCA] Patrick's DX Heaven

2007-09-11 Thread Bruce Portzer
Another possibility would be somewhere in southwestern Australia.

I'm not sure about real estate prices but the advantages would include
- being in or near a large city (Perth) and all the amenities that go
with it
- being in a relatively affluent English speaking country
- a relatively moderate climate
- a few local or semi-local AM stations, including a couple of 50 kwers,
but not nearly as many as you'd deal with in the US
- many miles of sparsely populated coastline for putting up Beverage
antennas
- lots of interesting DX targets on the other side of the Indian Ocean
- most of the skywave interference from the east would fade out well
before dawn
- you're about as far as you can get from IBOC interference, assuming
the Aussies don't decide to adopt it too

1566 HLAZ was up and down but often good, especially 1230-1315

1575 Thailand fair carrier with decent audio for a couple of minutes
around 1250

1413 and 1422 carriers visible around 1305, with 1422 producing a het.

Just for the heck of it, I listened to 440 for JOWF at 1250-1305, but

lose a number of classmates almost all to cancer. Is a big motivator.

In case anyone has missed it, John Bryant's Easter Island story is

It is an awe-inspiring and, at times, amusing tale of wild adventure from

I would have loved to see full color pictures from the story - the BW's

Chuck,

When they say Iloilo City I would think it was DXRP which has been
logged here in the past. No call heard, but the city itself.

I looked this morning -- nothing.

Re: [IRCA] Patrick's DX Heaven

2007-09-11 Thread Bob Foxworth
54 miles North of Grayland, WA there is 40 acres of land for sale
near the town of Queets. The price is $119,500. Property taxes
 are $63.00 a year.

A prospective buyer should make sure there is no homesteading
(as it is known in Fla.) in place that has kept the tax rate
artificially low. This sounds really low to me. Would a buyer
face a huge increase, as is happening right now in Fla.?

Also make sure there are no development rights or mineral
rights issues. Can you market the lumber? (prospective
income stream?) What road access do you have? 4-wheel?

It's located near the ocean (yards) on a heavily forest piece of land.
The acreage is located on the Quinault Indian Reservation.

That's another thing. Are you limited in how you can use the land
or what you put on it? What rights do the Quinault retain?

Looks like the nearest AM stations are the two in Aberdeen,
WA, 42 miles as the crow flies. Below is a link.

 Dennis,
 Vancouver, WA

I like the Western Australia concept. Never been there. Probably
no 1 on my wish list for places to see before I die. I would
give that some serious thought. I doubt however you could
import your gun collection (if you have one), they are pretty
squirrelly about Americans and their gun collections, hi. (just
kidding around, a little bit)

Can't see any advantage to going to Guam. Is that just because it
is a US territory, and far away?

Bruce,

I've heard JOWF at least three times in the past week or so from here
on Orcas... and also, Walt and I compare things each morning
you'd think that we would be very very similar, but often we are
not. I'd imagine that your inland location pretty much dampens the
JJ and CC signals coming down the Gulf of Georgia... I know that the
Olympic Mountains and possibly the rest of the San Juans that are
between me and Australia (but that the Victoria guys at least
partially clear) sure makes it more difficult for me to hear
Australia from here on Orcas.

Pat,

I think that if a Dxer bought the acreage there, they would have to thin a few
trees. Being on an Indian reservation, that might be a problem. Those trees
suck the AM signals. I have tried to DX in wooden areas, even elevated areas
with not much luck on AM. FM signals seem to get through them fine. Being
that close to the ocean would be nice. Who knows, the property might not have
power running to it. Richard Wood seems to do quite well from Hawaii.
