[IRCA] Ernest Cooper QSL collection

2008-12-20 Thread Karl J. Zuk

Does anyone know the fate of Ernie Cooper's amazing QSL collection?

It would make a fascinating book or museum piece.

Happy holidays and thanks, Karl Zuk N2KZ

I'd be very happy to post two or three dozen of those on the am-dx.com site,
if possible. Ernie must have had some amazing QSLs. He had a meeting at
his house probably in the late 70's. I vaguely remember looking at them. I
*think* he also used to bring some books to Ray's GTG as well. Isn't there
a museum in Maryland that may have that collection?

[IRCA] TP for 20 Dec from Victoria, BC

2008-12-20 Thread Nick Hall-Patch
A much improved morning, and it sounds as if I need to start listening no later
than 1400UT, as that's when much of the signal strength seems to occur, even if
there is a slight sunrise lift on some signals (for example, this morning had
828, 774 and to a lesser degree, 747, signing off at fair strength at 1600UT.
At the same time Tagalog was heard on 1512 which is quite unusual here.

Listened on and off (mostly on) from 1415 to 1600UT. Might have been a good
morning to have a Beverage on the coast. Our present outside temperatures
limit the beverages to hot chocolate however.

pretty darn good audio (at least briefly):

747 JOIB at 1447UT
774 JOUB
828 JOBB

reasonable audio at times during the period (though often battling w/splash
or noise):

189 R. Rossii; this seems to have good modulation, as was quite a bit stronger
audio than 279 which had a stronger carrier
558 possibly JOCR, just music at its peak at 1441UT, so no language ID
567 JOIK //594
594 JOAK
648 Russia at various times
873 JOGB //774 (North Korea //3320 was also heard mixing with this after
1530UT)
954 JOKR w/JJ talk at 1542UT
972 HLCA
1512 DYAB? Tagalog talk at 1558, but in the murk by the top of the hour.
1566 HLAZ, usual big carrier
1575 VoA Thailand

not so reasonable audio, occasional words in splash or noise:
153 R. Rossii
279 R. Rossii good carrier, poor audio
693 JOAB //774 at 1522
711 mx at 1425UT, likely S. Korea
837 //594, so possibly JOQK, though there is a lower powered Hokkaido station
also; in addition, there was mx mixing in which may have been China?
918 echoey CC talk at 1507; probably two other stations also
945 CNR1 //5030 at 1523
1017 not //NHK2, possibly China
1044 two stations, one CRI //7190
1134 JOQR w/JJ talk
1143 at 1520UT; seemed to be CC sounding, so Taiwan?
1242 two stations here, one seemed to be JJ talk, so JOLF
1287 JOHR
1386 NHK2 synchros //828

Burbles in the splatter and noise:

180
657 w/hum likely N. Korea
711
846 two stations
864
1008
1053
1116
1179
1188 good carrier, poor audio
1323 good carrier

Strongish het, no audio (either undermodulated or ravaged by splatter): 1269,
1395, 1404, 1422

best wishes,

Nick

2008-12-20 Thread Patrick Martin
Doug,

Thanks. Those old QSLs from the past are great to see. A lot of history
out there. Maybe this will start a trend and we will get to view many
old QSLs. I am a real history buff on QSLs anyway. So many stations
don't even exist any longer. Yes, it would be great see some of Ernie's
old QSLs. I never got a chance to see any of his. But I think some went
back to the 1920s. I got view some of Hank Wilkinson's (Santa Rosa CA).
I even saw an old KTOH (Territory of Hawaii) on 1490 with 250w. I did
not hear and QSL them until 1965 when they moved to 1350 and boosted to
5 KW. The station now is on 570 (Lihue). But the history is fantastic.

[IRCA] Alberta TA

2008-12-20 Thread Nigel Pimblett
Was out doing some antenna repair today (rather challenging in a foot or
more of snow and temps nearing -30C!), and while doing some testing
afterwards noted audio from Croatia. Just now they were playing what
sounded like the Croatian version of Jingle Bells. Quite a few other
carriers, but no other audio noted.

As usual, I'm getting not bad audio at times from Farda on 1575. Yes, 1134 has
a good carrier with snippets of audio as well at 01:10 (Farda was heard about
30 minutes ago at good strength)...Walt in Victoria, where for a change
it's also very cold for us.down to about - 10 deg C. Farda is good right
now at S5 level at 01:11strongest I've heard them in a while.

Things seem to have dipped here at the moment, but Croatia rose to a

Re: [IRCA] WOON 1240 TEST TONIGHT

2008-12-20 Thread Chernos Saul

Why has this been posted to the IRCA list like 5 times today?

Because this is a DX list? Because this is the first DX test of the season?
Because someone went to considerable effort to provide all of us with an
opportunity to log what can be a hard-to-get state? Because we're DXers and
maybe get a little excited about an opportunity like this? I dunno. I'm not
the thoughtful person who did the posting, but I'm glad he/she/they did,
because I got totally preoccupied with work today and would otherwise have
forgotten! Now, as for the miscreant poster, you ought to be thanked. So,
because today's magic number appears to be five, thank you, thank you, thank
you, thank you, and thank you!

I stand absolutely no chance of hearing it from where I am anyways.

That may be true. You don't tell is where you are, so it's hard to help. If
you're in San Quentin, try one of those nifty prison radios. The ones that
are transparent so you can't hide your contraband. I hear they're
exceptionally good receivers - actually, I have first-hand knowledge of that
myself, but we won't go there. There is one place where a Prison Radio, a
high-powered Drake, and anything and everything in between won't work. The
temperature should be a dead giveaway. Finally, there's state of mind, from
where many things aren't possible. Anyhow, without knowing your QTH I will
recommend two options: 1) Give it a shot from wherever you are, with
whatever means are at your disposal. Or, do nothing.

[IRCA] early TP; late TA

2008-12-20 Thread Nick Hall-Patch
only late TA seems to be 1215 with poor audio occasionally, likely Absolute.
864 with a good carrier but no more.

As for TP, at 0615UT, R. Rossii on 234 quite good, considerably poorer on 189
and 279; 774 fair audio JJ talk, 747 struggling to deliver audio, good carriers
on 567 and 1287..

Good luck with the RI test. Can't complain too much about the high latitude cx.

best wishes,

Nick

TA carriers still in here are 909, 999, 1071, 1206 (best) and 1215. 747 and

[IRCA] UNid'd help needed

2008-12-20 Thread Paul B. Walker, Jr.
I was tuning around on my Sony SRF59 hoping and praying I might pick up the
WOON 1240 DX test, but got Something else.

Right about 1:16am central, I heard a male voice say something like..
Todays Hits and Your Country Favorites, KM__1190

Now, I thought I heard SOMETHING like KMUN 1190. But that wasn't it. I'm
pretty sure it was on 1190, but it might have been on 1190. The call letters
obviously sounded like KMUN, but that wasn't it..

Any ideas? Help?

[IRCA] WOON DX test...no sign yet in Rochester

2008-12-20 Thread Scott Fybush
Was just drifting off to bed around 2:25 when I suddenly remembered the
test was on...dashed into the radio room to see if I could pull anything
out, and so far no love. Mix of kinda-local WGVA Geneva NY and someone
reading sports scores at 0232...will leave the recorder going for the
next half hour and see if anything materializes.

Whether it does or not...many thanks to Jay and the gang at WOON for trying!

Re: [IRCA] UNid'd help needed

2008-12-20 Thread Paul B. Walker, Jr.
Willis,

I did actually think of KMFX, but I ruled it out for two reasons.

1.) It's a 100 percent pure simulcast of KMFX-FM and the liner I heard
clearly made mention of only one station, by mentioning a frequency that I
thought was an AM frequency. But, I could be wrong (as I've been known to be
before) because the signal faded out right in the middle of the call letters
and frequency being given.

2.) KMFX was supposedly off the air.

However, if KMFX was hastily turned back on.. it might not have signed off
on time.

THanks very much for the suggestion Willis.. I'll delve a little deeper into
it.

[IRCA] WOON DX test

2008-12-20 Thread texas4421
As per the test here is what I *think* I heard.

At 0207 there was very defiantly CW. The QRM on channel was bad, and the CW
weak.

At 0211 heard CW again. Again the signal was unreadable and very weak.

At 0020, heard CW, but this time not sure if it was CW. Could have been some
noise from an ESPN station.

No audio, no voice announcements copied.

I do have a station from North Carolina that keeps fading just as they are
ready to give the call letters.

[IRCA] No sign of woon

2008-12-20 Thread rfoxwor1
No sign of WOON in central Fla during, at least, first 20 minutes.
Cx to NE seem poor. Beacons WPHT in/out weakly under a loud
Cuban, and WBBR in/out under messy 300 Hz loud het. WOWO
1190 poor, fady.

I contend that repeated 5 minute, or even 1 minute tests, offer
a better chance of hearing a station test, if you think that cx
are so variable from night to night, than a long test that may
happen on a poor morning, as this one apparently has done.

The counter argument of course is that time the DXer can
dedicate to that effort. Unless the DXer has a SDR.

Absence of many early reports here is not a good sign.

I tried tuning up to 1242 to peak up any audible CW
but no luck. If they had run 3000 Hz or even 5000 Hz CW
IDs I could try for that with BFO on (by tuning 1243, 1245
etc in CW mode) but there seems to be inertia to having
such IDs included in DX tests. I'd like to see IDs at 600,
1000, and 3000 Hz. If I was not hearing the first ones
(in AM mode) I could try the higher pitched ones in CW mode.

Knock KFXR/Dallas off your idea list, as they are now CNN News, having

The thing is.. the calls I heard didn't sound remotely like KKOJ.

looking for sound alikes just doesn't fit it.

I'm investigating further.

Crud...the sports scores turned out to be my hyper-local WHTK 1280 a
couple of miles away. (Which shouldn't be audible on 1240...may be time
to give their CE a call next week...)

With that nulled, just a very weak WGVA in the mud.
