Yes, slightly off-topic for MW enthusiasts, but read on!

With help from Bill Hepburn I've been learning to use DSC Decoder and

SeaTTY
software to decode NAVTEX transmissions on 518 kHz during the last
several

days. The DSC software is availble on a 21 day trial and SeaTTY is
shareware. Once you get the hang of it it is possible to get marine

weather

in text form. The only hardware needed is a regular audio cable between

the

Drake's line out and the computer's line in.

A nice feature is that I can tune my radio to 519.09 LSB, go do other
things, and the text appears as a digest to be reviewed later. SeaTTY is
lbrings in a lot of corrupt text, but seems to capture a lot more than
the

DSC program. However the DSC program when it hits is in much more

readible

form.

Stations heard so far include:

Cheapeake VA
Boston MA
Miami FL
Sydney NS
Labrador NL
Wiarton ON
New Orleans LA
Sept-Iles QC
San Francisco CA
Saint John NB
Savannah GA

This evening I was really pleased to receive fragmentary text messages

from
stations in Nuuk, Greenland and Magallenes, Chile. While not strictly
MW,

I

find it fascinating that Greenland and Chile can be heard on the edge of

the

MW band from western NY. It appears that the Chile reception is even
further south than Bill's Puerto Mott reception of a few days ago.

I've been DXing NAVTEX off and on for a couple of years. Best catch so
far is Sandakan, Malaysia during a DXpedition to Grayland, WA. At
Grayland I've also heard Japan, Russia, Korea, Taiwan, and China several
times, and Guam once. From home, I've found Kodiak to be a very
prolific source of weather material for the Gulf of Alaska, Bering Sea,
Arctic Ocean, Aleutian Islands, etc. I can also hear Tofino, Astoria,
Prince Rupert, San Francisco, and Long Beach regularly, and sometimes
Honolulu, New Orleans, Miami, and San Juan.

The content can be interesting at times, dealing with stuff like naval
exercises (areas to avoid), storms, capsized ships, maritime hazards, etc.

There's a gold mine of Navtex information at

Re: [IRCA] ICF-S5W Slider Loopstick Transplant is... a DUD

2008-12-22 Thread D1028Gary
Hi Kevin,

 Thanks for your comments.

One of the reasons why this loopstick experimentation (both Slider and
monster composite bars) is so fascinating is that you never really know what
will happen, until you transplant your fanatical creations into a new radio
design. You can have a phenomenal technical breakthrough (like the slider
E100's and slider DT-200VX), or the biggest technical dud in recent history,
like the ICF-S5W. Although I've never been to a casino, the feelings of
anticipation must be about the same.

 The ICF-S5W's stock loopstick is 6 1/4 x 3/8, so it's pretty close to
the transplant size (that is, not a huge difference like the E100, or
DT-200VX). The ICF-S5W is completely unimpressed by the Slider function, with
all
frequencies optimized within about 1/10 inch, and changing mostly in audio,
not signal strength. Having performed about 15 alignments on the ICF-S5 (W)
series radios, I was kind of worried this might happen, since peaking the coil
on 600 kHz was mainly an audio judgement call, and not a sharp signal
strength peak. The best Slider results are obtained when an alignment shows a
razor-sharp peak on the 600 kHz weak station (i.e. the E100, DT-200VX, and
C.Crane
SWP turkey units), making a sliding coil system critical in spreading out
the sensitivity over the entire AM band.

The ICF-S5W's stock 455 kHz IF filter is not bad for the basic portable
genre, and it can be replaced by the Murata CFJ455K5 premium filter for
razor-sharp selectivity (at the expense of its great audio fidelity, however).

But an analog radio like the ICF-S5W is never going to be the first choice of
transoceanic DXers, no matter how selective. A Slider E100 will run circles
around it, because of the digital tuning and memories.

The ICF-2010 and ICF-SW7600GR stock portables both have fixed loopstick
coil systems, and cannot accept a Slider system. Both of them respond well
to larger, composite ferrite bars, however (the 30 loopstick ICF-2010 is
King of the Hill here).

Anyway, loopstick experimentation is a fun way to spend the Puget Sound
deep freeze :)

 73, Gary

In a message dated 12/21/2008 11:05:53 P.M. Pacific Standard Time,
sa...@sounddsl.com writes:

Hey Gary:

Thanks for delving into this project, even though the results were less
than exhilarating. Your experimentation is a big part of what makes this
hobby keep growing!

Does the Amidon version benefit at all from being able to tweak the
position of the sliding coil, or is the stock unit well-matched to the
stock ferrite antenna up down the band?

I think you had mentioned before that the filters in the S5W were not able
to be changed out, so perhaps the S5W is as good as it will ever be. The
engineers at Sony probably never guessed that something like the Slider
e100 would make the sensitivity and selectivity on the S5W seemjust
OK.

Praying the power stays on - Kevin

 Hello Guys,

Not every loopstick transplant is amazingly successful-- some are a
  lesson in humility.

After carefully creating a 7.5 Amidon ferrite bar loopstick wound
 with
40/44 Litz wire matching the ICF-S5W stock inductances (on two coils),
 and
painstakingly threading the four Litz wires through a tiny hole so they
wouldn't snarl the dial string, the net result was exactly the same
 sensitivity as the stock unit!

With amazing successes in the E100 and DT-200VX Ulttralights, the
overconfident transplant tech was probably in need of a lesson in
 humility, and it
 certainly was delivered-- big time.

So now it's back to refining the E100 and DT-200VX Slider radios,
 both
of which have managed to thrill everyone who has tried them. With a deep
freeze here, there should be time enough for many fanatical technical
  projects.

  73, Gary DeBock

Dean,

Their pattern is not on Radio Locator so I was just wondering if
there was a particular reason cited in their proposal for the move
like industrial buildup around their current site, area population
shift, etc. It won't make much difference here as they are already
dominant. Thanks.

[IRCA] Help needed with an unid

2008-12-22 Thread Mike Stonebridge
Hi Everyone:

I sat on 1460 last night for some time and at 23:00MST (01:00EST or 06:00UTC) I
heard a religious station. Right at the TOH a male voice gave the local time as
1.00am and gave out an ID which for the life of me I just cannot get, even tho
I've been over the recording many times. This was followed by a female voice
which said I was listening to: Global Catholic Radio Network or something
like that. According to my NRC log book there are many religious stations on
1460 but none that fit the syllables I heard. I have a 30 second audio clip in
wav format I could send to anyone interesting in helping me. It has to be in
wav format as I have yet to figure out how to convert it over to a mp3 format.

All was not lost as the session did produce one new one as I heard several
clear IDs for KKAQ Thief River Falls, MN. This was at 06:00 and again at
07:00MST.

Mike in St Isidore, AB with AOR 7030+, Quantum Phaser, EWE's of 110' 125', a
1000' E/W beverage and 2 x 1000' BOGs at 195 320 degrees

Re: [IRCA] Help needed with an unid

2008-12-22 Thread Mike Stonebridge
Thanks Mike for the suggestion. I checked it out and it lists 3 stations on
1460, and 2 of these are in the eastern time zone, WZNZ Jacksonville FL and
WHIC Rochester NY. I also listened to my recording maybe 6 times again and I
cannot get either of those 2 call signs or cities out of it. So I still
dunno what I was listening to.

Mike-
You asked for help for the following.

This was followed by a female voice which said I was listening to:
Global Catholic Radio Network or something like that. According to my
NRC log book there are many religious stations on 1460 but none that
fit the syllables I heard. I have a 30 second audio clip in wav format
I could send to anyone interesting in helping me. It has to be in wav
format as I have yet to figure out how to convert it over to a mp3
format.

Here is a list of known EWTN stations on 1460 in North America.
1460 WMCJ CULLMAN AL 5000 500 DA-N RELIGION EWTN EX-WFMH
1460 WZNZ JACKSONVILLE FL 15000 5000 DA-N RELIGION EWTN EX-WZZN
1460 KHOJ ST. CHARLES MO 5000 - DA-D RELIGION EWTN //WRYT-1080
1460 WHIC ROCHESTER NY 3700 5000 DA-N RELIGION EWTN EX-WWWG 1460

My guess would be Alabama or Missouri. The Missouri station could have been
on day power. This is only a guess.
