[IRCA] Iceland 189

2009-01-24 Thread Patrick Martin
I have a fair signal on 189. Got the IS at 0700 and a man in Icelantic.
Better than yesterday.
Not a peep off the EWEs, but fairly decent with the beverage.

1610Caribbean Beacon BWI Anguilla 0400 21/01/09
I can hear the voice of Melissa Scott preaching (or should I say 'trying to
preach').
Frequency is clear of any noise or IBOC. No sign of the Caribbean Beacon on
690. There is far to much IBOC from WLW.

The signal is a S5 on my receiver. Small amount of QSB.

[IRCA] West Coast Recording of Croatia-1134 on Slider E100

2009-01-24 Thread D1028Gary
Hello Guys,

With exceptional transoceanic propagation last night, many DXers were
able to make breakthrough receptions worldwide.

Although this recording pales in significance to Gary Deacon's
accomplishment of receiving KMOX-1120 from South Africa last night (breaking
the
all-time Ultralight DX distance record at 8,560 miles, with a BAREFOOT Sony
SRF-M37V), I was thrilled to receive my first Ultralight TA, when
Croatia-1134
came in with a great signal at 0202 UTC (6:02 PM local time). The recording
was made on the tiny Slider E100 (with Murata filter), and has been uploaded
to
the Ultralightdx Yahoo group site. What fun!

[IRCA] TP for 24 Jan from Victoria, BC

2009-01-24 Thread Nick Hall-Patch
I'm not sure I can agree with Bill and Dennis' estimate of this morning's DX; I
listened pretty continuously from 1400 to 1550UT, and there were more (and
stronger) signals than I knew what to do with (see below). The upper band may
have been down a bit from yesterday, but the lower band more than compensated.

One variant however is that I was using a different antenna than usual. Some
time ago I haywired a WNW 23' x 33' corner fed loop to try and get some
percentage of what Walt Salmaniw hears with his larger corner fed loops (height
matters if you ever build one of these, and I don't have the convenient tall
trees that Walt does). There's more raw signal with it than the Flags, but it
doesn't have as good rejection of domestics, so it tends not to deliver the DX
any better than the Flags. However, this morning for some reason it was just
roaring with signals while the Flag in a similar direction was relatively
subdued. The corner fed loop still delivered a fair bit of splash, but the DX
had more punch; the splashiness might explain why my perception was that there
were a lot of strong carriers that should have been delivering audio and
weren't.That disparity continued until about 1540UT, when the two antennas
quickly returned to their previous more normal characteristic!
 s. Put that into my I'll never understand antennas file.

Re: [IRCA] TP for 24 Jan from Victoria, BC

2009-01-24 Thread Neil Kazaross
Ahh...this reminds me of an antenna email you sent me a while back. I have
modelled both superloops (cornerfed flags) and conventional flags with EZNEC
and according to EZNEC height has very little effect on the patterns. Of
course it effects the gain since it means a larger antenna. Bruce Conti's DX
using his superloops is extraordinary, IMHO considering his QTH is somewhat
inland and that his bearings to the coast to Eur-asia are quite far from the
Atlantic, and to me this indicates a really good antenna system.

What might be happening at your sunrise is some tilt in arrival angles and a
different response at those angles from the two antennas.

If your domestic rejection isn't so good with the corner-fed loop, perhaps
some adjustment of termination would help or just phase it vs the flag ?

Re: [IRCA] Friday night TA/ Beverage antenna

2009-01-24 Thread Patrick Martin

Yes, TA activity on LW was good. I wish I did not have the noise level
there though on LW, but it could be worse. I did find out that the 1500'
Eastern beverage has a pretty decent lobe for TAs, where it doesn't work
on MW TAs. Apparently the wire is too long aimed at 75 degrees to work
on MW TA's. It was suggested a shorter wire running next to the beverage
going East, so that might be an option, if a shorter wire would not
affect the directivity of the 1500 footer. I sure don't want to mess up
the directivity of the beverage for great domestic DX. I'll have to
fiqure out what percentage 150-300 khz matches to 1500 feet and maybe
use that same method on the length of a wire next to the beverage for MW
TA use. That is a thought, since the beverage does do a nice job with
TA's. Does anyone have any thoughts on that idea?

Patrick

Re: [IRCA] Friday night TA/ Beverage antenna

2009-01-24 Thread Walter Salmaniw
Patrick, I would highly recommend the Wellbrook ALA 100 series of magnetic
loops. You have the space. Erecting one in about a 40 to 60' diameter and
oriented to Europe would enhance your LW (and even the bottom of the MW band)
enormously.
I have the big Conti loops at my place, but the ALA outperforms them by a long
shot up to and including 531 kHz. It's somewhat pricey, but well worth it.
There are a lot of ALA 100s in Victoriahighest per capita in the world ;-)
..Walt.

At 12:44 PM 1/24/2009, you wrote:

Re: [IRCA] Friday night TA/ Beverage antenna

2009-01-24 Thread Patrick Martin
Walt,

I talked to John about the Wellbrook loops at Grayland and looked at
them. I really don't have any room to set one to the NE. The only
antenna I have to the NE is the SW EWE and I have thought of the NE EWE,
but the return coax will be sitting under 3-4 feet of water in the
Winter. I have plenty of room in certain directions, but not always
the direction I want. :-) The Wellbrook would also have to be pointed to
the NE/SW correct, as would a EWE? So I am in the same boat. I could put
a 700' beverage to the North again (maybe), with 150 feet of buried
coax, but I have that neighbor to the West of me with the light dimmers,
so that is another issue in running any antennas over towards that
house. They have been threatening to move for years and are elderly, so
maybe in time they will move. The previous person there had no noisy
lights. I found no TA LW activity on any of the other antennas period!
Just the Eastern beverage brought them in. If it wasn't was the noise
level, many would have been excellent. They were S9 or better in many
cases, but the buzzy noise level is an issue too. There seem to be an
issue with the EWEs, vertical, etc on TA's. I get them but not as good
as I wished. The EWEs are excellent on TPs though. I guess I am trying
to have my DX Cake and eat it too. hi.

2009-01-24 Thread Patrick Martin
P.S.

Walt,

I think, there might also be an issue with the angle I get the TA's with
that hill to the NE. Some antennas like the beverage works well, yet the
EWE's don't. But that is just a guess. As I have heard more TA activity
on beverages than other antennas here.

[IRCA] Corner fed loop: was TP for 24 Jan from Victoria, BC

2009-01-24 Thread Nick Hall-Patch
At 19:35 1/24/2009, you wrote:

Actually the corner fed loop has a vactrol adjustable termination, Neil, so I'm
always trying to minimize splash as I listen. But with the Flag, the front to
back ratio seems to be broader and deeper overall, meaning that listening is
less troubled by splatter at most settings of the termination; it's not a
matter of fine tuning it, and I often leave it at a general setting unless I'm
really working at digging something out.

I've used EZNEC a bit (I'm no expert, mind you), and found that I can't really
verify what I've observed in real life with different sized corner fed loops.
If you can, I'd love to find out how it's done.

best wishes,

Nick

Re: [IRCA] Corner fed loop: was TP for 24 Jan from Victoria, BC

2009-01-24 Thread Chris Knight
Nick,

I notice the splash, too, with the corner-fed loop, and it does seem
stronger than on my flag. The main advantage I see with a corner-fed loop is
it can null all my locals (no phasing required) when oriented just right. I
heard that a flag is optimized for a real impedance (~950 ohms) with the
imaginary portion (Xc and Xl) at zero due to the center positions of the
feed and termination points. For a corner-fed loop the feedpoint impedance
would have more imaginary component which would have to be tuned out. Even
so the antenna performs really well for this QTH.

Next weekend I'm going to convert the NW Flag over to a corner-fed loop with
dual-termination NW/SE. Hopefully that will be an improvement, if not, an
experiment.

Anniversary weekend this weekend so won't get back to DXing/computer until
next week.

Well, I'm about the only one that had more success last night than the
previous one, so I'm obviously not a good barometer, but I have had
audio today thus far on 1575, 1539, 1269, 1134, 999,and 864. Most of
the audio has been fleeting, but 1134 was quite good in English at 2319,
before fading to nothing.1539 has been the most consistent thus far.

Dare we hope for a third night of TAs? Farda on 1575 is starting
to poke through with audio, and it's only 3 pm local, two hours
before sunset. Quite a number of carriers too, mainly on the upper
end of the dial at the moment.1539 and 1503 are about the strongest.

I hope it's better than last night Nigel. Up here it was worse than
the previous one. I had faint audio on 1134 just before local sunset
and a faint hets on 1215 and 1575. Less than hour later nothing on MW.
LW had faint audio on 153, 162, 171 and 189 and they never improved.

Yes, 1539 has done especially well this year. Much better than 1575
today. No luck with 1521 here, but I was getting weak audio on 1125,
and also audio on 1035. I'm guessing 1035 would likely have been either
Portugal or Estonia? Doesn't sound Portuguese, but hopefully I have
enough recorded on that one sometime can pin that down for me.

two hours before sunset here, there was just a weak carrier on 1575. Half an
hour beforehand (0025UT) and 1575 had some audio traces and there might have
been some on 1539, but followed by a deep fade. Half decent audio on 1215, big
erratic carriers on 612, 819, 864, 1044so things are off to a reasonable

[IRCA] Tons of TA carriers audible in Memphis

2009-01-24 Thread Brandon Jordan
I missed the past few nights of good TA conditions. I fired up the
SDR-IQ this evening and strong TA carriers visible, especially low-band:

576, 585, 612 producing threshold audio, 521, 711, 756, 765, 909, 949,
954, 1134 (second strongest), 1206, 1215, 1503, 1521.

My experience this far inland is that transmitter sunrise enhancement
can produce some of the best chances for audio during an opening.
Fingers crossed some of these improve enough to be audible on the E100
slider!

handed her the headphones and she heard some guy singing a

[IRCA] TAs for early Saturday evening

2009-01-24 Thread Walter Salmaniw
It's 2:45 pm here and there's a good carrier on 1575, so perhaps this bodes
well..jump ahead to 5:45pm (01:45 UTC) and I'm back at the dials: LW:
171: good audio, 207 (poor), 252 (poor) so far on LW, so not too much of note.
 1215 finally for me
had a great signal at 01:48, only to fade down into the mud a minute
laterbound to rebound in another minute or two. 1575 has been rather
disappointing so far.Walt in Victoria

Any idea who it is, Patrick? It's been a big carrier here several times since
sunset, but no audio yet.

Things continue erratic, and perhaps at a lower signal strength than half an
hour agohave had audio traces on 621, 756, 855, and 864 in addition to more
audio on 1134, 1215, 1269, 1539 and 1575. 1575 and 1215 have given up some
pretty decent audio at times this evening.

on beverages than other antennas here.

Understand your desire to stick with the tried and true. The nice thing about
the ALA, though, is that it takes very little space, and you can increase gain
(but perhaps noise too) with 2 or 3 loops of wire. In my original
configuration, I had it on the ground with a loop perhaps 10 feet circumference
only with 2 or 3 loops and it still performed very well on LW. I now have a
single loop up around 20' off the ground and about 40' around. Something to
think about..Walt.

2009-01-24 Thread Pete Taylor
Not sure where Fish Hoek is but when I was in Cape Town several eons
ago (is that redundant?), I logged as far west as WHO. Equipment at
the time was a 13lb Sony ICF 6700W and an old loop the creator of I
don't recall. The 6700 still works and in fact I just pulled in
Croatia-1134 on it bare.

Re: [IRCA] 1134 heard on eton E100

2009-01-24 Thread D1028Gary
Hi Kaz Walt,

Congratulations, Kaz, on receiving Croatia-1134 on a barefoot SRF-59--
truly an accomplishment in patience and determination (and qualifying for a
nice First Ultralight TA award from John Bryant and Rob Ross, should you feel
so inclined).

Unfortunately, the SRF-59 (and SRF-39FP) has a bizarre IF that is not
amenable to any filter upgrades that we are aware of, including the Murata
CFJ455K5. The IF is around 50 kHz, and in processed inside Sony's proprietary
CXN1129 IC chip. I have personally transplanted many large loopsticks into
these analog radios, which manage to boost sensitivity, but also degrade
selectivity. For this reason, they are not really suitable for DXpedition
work,
like the 455 kHz IF E100's (which can be boosted greatly in both sensitivity
and selectivity).

Don't know. It is a very simple receiver, so one should think it's
possible. Gary, John, Guy?.Walt.

Afraid that a conventional filter cannot be added the the SRF-59 family, Neil.

These radios are an engineering marvel that generate an IF in the 55kHz range
and the filter is actually an active op amp type deep inside the IC that is the
core of the radio. I suspect redesigning the IC might not be within the
capabilities of most of us here.

best wishes,

Nick

Finally! We are on the same playing field -

Still - lots of stuff happening tonight - most notable;
loud het on 621 and 828...
border line audio on 855, 1134, 1215...

Re: [IRCA] Croatia on E100

2009-01-24 Thread D1028Gary
Congratulations Craig,

Croatia-1134 is the greatest thing to happen to the Ultralight Radio
Community in a long time! After so many DXers received it as their first
Ultralight TA (and experienced the related thrill), we should send a letter of
thanks to that station. Like the other many DXers receiving Croatia-1134 on a
pocket radio, you are deserving of a First Ultralight TA award, if you wish
to apply.
