KTLA is not so negative. However, even they are broadcasting into on the
towers on most newscasts, including a bit of the history. Hopefuly the
fire will not distroy the sites, but in time it may happen with all of
the dry weather in So Cal.

Oh yes, those flames look too close on the shots on KTLA (News at 10).
KTLA claims they are a mile away, but with flames shotting 60-80 feet
up, it doesn't look too positive. They did clear a lot of brush away
from the sites the past few days, but is it enough?

It's not looking good for Mt. Wilson. One LA TV station is saying that
it's
not a matter of if, it's a matter of when. CBS wisely built auxiliary
facilities for all their FM's at a different site so they won't be
affected
if they lose Mt. Wilson.

[IRCA] TPs from Orcas Island: Sept 1 09

2009-09-01 Thread John H. Bryant
There was a decent rebound today here. Not too much at all until just
before 1300, a half hour before LSR. It was decent with, for me,
quite a bit of DU action, until exactly 1330 when LSR turned off the
band. I had DUs at Language Recognition level or better on 612, 702,
828, 846, 891 and 1512. The biggest Guns from East Asia were in, too.
It was mostly a low band event with almost half of the lower band
channels with at least threshold audio and only ten above 1098.
Something was putting in threshold audio beneath the OC from the
Marshalls on 1098.

Enough of a DU morning that I'm going to get my DU Super Loop back in
the mix today, but I suspect the story of the horse and the barn door
may be on my mind tomorrow AM.

I guess I was spoiled by the better than normal TP reception over the last
week to ten days. This morning beat yesterday's virtual washout, but it was
quite ho-hum nevertheless.
-

738 TAHITI weak audio at 1246, then fair to good at 1258 with French talk by
woman

747 JAPAN JOIB Sapporo, weak to fair at 1246 with Japanese talk

972 UNIDENTIFIED - weak signal of a male announcer just above threshold at
1249; probably HLCA South Korea

1053 NORTH KOREA - jammer transmission at a good level 1250; no sign of
South Korea's V. of Natl. Salvation co-channel station.

[IRCA] 531 UnID DU Recording- Assistance Requested

2009-09-01 Thread D1028Gary
Hello All,

During the Grayland DXpedition on August 30th, a foreign language station
presumed to be 531-PI in Auckland, New Zealand was recorded at 1320 UTC,
mixing with the notorious no-ID Australian pop-music station (presumed to be
4KZ, according to a tip from Leigh Donaldson). The foreign language is
certainly not one of the Asian groups, and is presumably a Pacific Island
dialect.

If any of the New Zealand or Australian DXers in the Ultralightdx Yahoo
group (or any other DXers) could take a listen to the MP3 and possibly
identify the announcer's voice or the language, it would be most appreciated.
531
kHz has always been a fiasco frequency during my summer Grayland trips,
with at least three UnID DU's having been heard this summer. Thanks!

Word I'm hearing is that the smoke being seen on the webcam is from
backfires being set on or near observatory property by firefighters.

The director of the observatory was interviewed on NPR earlier this
hour, and he said things have actually improved considerably up there
during the course of the day today. He says fire crews were pulled off
the mountain yesterday for fear that they'd be trapped up there, but
that they were brought back in around noon, PT, today.

I'm also hearing word that KRTH 101.1 has switched from Wilson to its
aux transmitter in the Verdugo Mountains between Glendale and Burbank.
Speculation is that they may have a clogged air filter in their
transmitter from all the smoke...but keep in mind that it's almost ALL
speculation now, since nobody from the stations or the observatory is up
on the mountain, and won't be for a while yet.

I recall a long time ago, the late Don Erickson and I had an ongoing debate by
letter ( yes, it was that long ago ) about the relative scariness of
earthquakes vs hurricanes. At the time I think we both agreed that tornadoes
were the worst.

What parts of California have to contend with in terms of natural disasters
simply isn't fair - earthquakes, monsoons coming in off the ocean, mudslides,
and the fires.

Re: [IRCA] Latest from Mount Wilson

2009-09-01 Thread Dennis Gibson
I just watched (5:05 PM) a live report on KNBC-4 from directly behind the
Mt. Wilson towers. Things must not be so bad if they're allowing the media
and satellite trucks up there. KCAL-9 has excellent coverage. They are
paired with KCBS-2 but not simulcast so they don't always have coverage when
other stations do. They are not covering it at this time. KCAL is supposed
to have a Dodger game at 7:00.

KNBC screwed up the video of the 5:15 Mars Martin big time; they had it
locked in perfectly then it went behind the chopper skid and they lost it.
Their audio of the 5:00 news conference was screwed up too. The cable
company lets KTLA news get through at the normal newscast times.

Right now KNBC is all I can get. Thank you must carry. What's hard to
understand is why some of the FM auxs. are also on Mt. Wilson. I believe
some are just lower on the same tower.

KNBC aired another live report from directly behind all of the Mt. Wilson
towers. The reporter and others that could be seen in the background seem to
be OK with being up there. KNBC does not have its act together. The NBC
network anchor Brian Williams is there and they were interviewing him live.
At one point during the interview they were supposed to switch to an
interview with some pilots at nearby Whiteman Airport. The interview wasn't
ready and he just stood there silent for about thirty seconds with a look on
his face like he was looking for a hole to crawl into. He's doing a live
western edition of the network news. Somebody botched the transition between
the end of KNBC's news coverage and the network news.

KCAL-9 is going to have the Dodger game instead of fire coverage.

Regarding the convention I'm supposed to arrive in Albuquerque at 6:18 PM
Mountain time on Thursday. I don't know how long getting my rental car and
getting into my room will take. If others are getting there on Thursday
maybe we could meet for dinner. If you're interested please write me
directly or call me on Thursday at (805) 455-7116; my cell number. My flight
is supposed to leave LAX at 3:30 Pacific time. I won't be able to receive

I am really looking forward to the convention. Thanks to Mike Sanburn for

Re: [IRCA] 531 UnID DU Recording- Assistance Requested

2009-09-01 Thread D1028Gary
Thanks Patrick,

I appreciate the tip very much. The no ID Aussie pop music station on 531
kHz has been showing up during almost every summer Grayland DXpedition
recently-- always without an ID, of course.

Re: [IRCA] 531 UnID DU Recording- Assistance Requested

2009-09-01 Thread D1028Gary
Thanks Paul,

4KZ is apparently not one of the Aussies that shows up for me frequently at
Grayland on 531 kHz, if it ID's often. My luck is to get stuck with the
other ones :)

4KZ DOES ID often, they usually have a jingle coming out of a commercial
break into music, and they have a full ID at the top of the hour. They
stream online at www.4kz.com.au so you can check against that.

Their General Manager, Al Kirton is very DXer friendly.

Re: [IRCA] 531 UnID DU Recording- Assistance Requested

2009-09-01 Thread Patrick Martin
Gary,

Back in the days (70s) when they were 2KM on 530 and then 531, they IDed
after every song. Then in the 80s when they changed to 2MC (Mid Coast
Radio) they still IDed with 2 M C or Mid Coast, but after the change
over to 2PM (Port Macquarrie) they don't ID like they used to
unfortunately. I believe they are a network now too. They have been an
old friend for at least 40 years here on the coast. They were always in
the clear in the 70s 80s, but after 1XPI came on, the QRM was there.
Alexandra NZ was heard on occasion, but not as common. But PI (Pacific
Islands Radio) is strong. Then a couple years back when the typhoon tore
up the towers of 4KZ, they became common also, after going ND. That has
been a jewell of luck for us DXers, as I tried for years to nab them,
but never could until the past couple of years. 4KZ generally nulls the
NE, but now is ND. I have no idea when they will get their towers back
and the DA system back in order.

Patrick
