Re: [IRCA] NRC Radio Log

2009-09-14 Thread Mike Sanburn

NRC log is great for the price! In the old days the Vane Jones guide was the DX
bible but as nice as that book was, it did not include addresses. The last
Whites Radio Log that I bought was way out of date on many call changes.
HIGHWAY RADIO by William Stank has a neat format showing the stations location
on a map of each state. Do they even print the Broadcasting Yearbook
anymore??? I think the internet may have rendered that one useless. It had
oodles of info in it. --Mike Sanburn

Martin, 'glad that you found your noise source. I know the neighbors
here have bug zappers and other toys. Upper half of the band is often
just buzz. P.S. Wouldn't it be great if somebody could convince Radio
Shack/Realistic to start manufacturing those little TRFs again??? I know
that we have Ultralights now, but that was the ultralight of its
day.Heading out to AZ and NM in a few days. 73 Mike Sanburn KG6LJU

Subject: [IRCA] The hunt for a noise source

I wanted to share this short story with the groups.

In August I took a trip to Michigan to visit my parents and when I
returned I found a big buzz on my radio across MW and SW. Just what I
wanted at the start of the DX season.

Well, today I had the house to myself so I took some time to turn off
the main breaker and try to isolate the noise source. My old Radio Shack
TRF was turned on and off went the power. Turning on each breaker
individually and checking the TRF I finally isolated the noise to a
breaker labeled PLUG. And of course it was the last breaker in the box.

The PLUG breaker goes to all the wall plugs in the house so next I ran
around the house unplugging things like the desktop
computer/printer/wireless router, my radio stuff and the TV/Cable. These
are all on power strips making it easy to disconnect whole systems with
one plug. The noise was still present.

Then I started searching the plugs in each bedroom and finally found
the culprit. It was the charger for my wife's cell phone. She leaves it
plugged in all the time.

So don't give up on noise. I live on a busy corner with 5 street
lights and my wife likes stuff that produces noise. We have a Plasma TV
(no DX while that's on), halogen lights, fluorescent tubes, quartz
lights on our patio, a remote control fan lamp, dimmers (these seem to
be OK), Oreck XL air purifiers, and flood lamps in the kitchen that
generate noise.

Now I'm ready for the DX season.

Paul, the FCC db is nice to for power/pattern info.

I also use CityData for strongest stations heard. If you hear an ad

suspect station is audible in that town.

I use radio-locator because it shows me what towns the station covers and
the distance it gets, the FCC stuff doesnt really give me that.

City-Data is not terribly accurate on strongest stations heard. It once told
me an AM Daytimer in Pittsburgh, PA put a good signal into Pembina, ND along
the North Dakota/Canada border.

Around 2145 CDT I noted some CBC type pgming occ mixing with WARD (Sunny

fade and this would come up to fair level, generally with piano jazz type mx.
Traces were also hrd // on 990 it seemed when CBW (weak on these BOGs) and CKGM
would fade down. Finally on 750 at 2304 a nice Newfoundland and Labrador ment
by a gal and into wx. A CBC Radio 1 ID at 2306.

At times a strong and often audible signal from Holland 747 and bad Toronto
slop meant that I this was best in USB.

Best I've ever had NL here although a couple seasons back I managed bits of cl
mx // defunct CBA 1070 on both 990 and 750.

2009-09-14 Thread Nick Hall-Patch
Still haven't had time to go over yesterday's logs, and had to jury rig an
antenna this morning as my old one needed to come down.

So, this morning was still pretty good, but much more of an emphasis on
Australia and even New Zealand (e.g. Trackside Radio on 1476 //1485), but still
a lot of Chinese and Japanese and Koreans (how about N. Korea u/ Hawaiian
semi-local on 1080?) as well; no India, but can't have everything. Some
signals remained even 45 minutes after sunrise...obviously the lack of
electrical noise from the now silenced scientific equipment has a very positive
effect.

That's the end of this DXpedition. Mixed feelings, as it's good to be starting
home in spite of leaving the DX behind.

Colin, I suspect that we're all getting older, and it's just not quite so easy
to get up early anymore. Anyway, my eyes didn't open until about 13:25 UTC,
and I didn't get to the dials until 13:35 and listened until 13:58 UTC. I

but I didn't think it was CC, but rather JJ or KK. The bottom half of the band
was in very nicely too. By the time I reached the top of the band, there

So, this morning was still pretty good, but much more of an emphasis on
Australia and even New Zealand (e.g. Trackside Radio on 1476 //1485), but still
a lot of Chinese and Japanese and Koreans (how about N. Korea u/ Hawaiian

signals remained even 45 minutes after sunrise...obviously the lack of
electrical noise from the now silenced scientific equipment has a very positive
effect.

That's the end of this DXpedition. Mixed feelings, as it's good to be starting
home in spite of leaving the DX behind.

My work schedule didn't allow a full-fledged listening session this

Bruce saw, rather than what the guys on Vancouver Island had.Had
weakish audio from the Japanese big guns, and a little from Brisbane's

2009-09-14 Thread Guy Atkins
Hi Gary,

What a difference a few miles can make! I reviewed my Perseus WAV files from
this morning, and found NOTHING on 639 kHz around 1335 UTC. Only earlier,
around 1315, did I find any scraps of audio. It was so weak and splatter
covered that I couldn't identify the language to tell if it was Chinese or
not...absolutely NOTHING like the MP3 you sent me of 639 as heard on your
ultralights this morning.

From my side of Puyallup, the best signals were 972 HLCA South Korea and
1575 VOA Thailand, at fair to good levels 1245-1345 most of the time. I only
found a weak het on 1332 kHz at 1330.
