[IRCA] IRCA Convention

2010-09-26 Thread Phil Bytheway
Today's activities are over.
Nice view from the Astoria Tower.
30 minute business meeting.
Good banquet
Auction netted about $150.

Lots of DX discussions.

Tomorrow at 10 AM, some of the folks will take a tour of Tillamook.

I will be driving back to Seattle about mid-day... pretty tired right now.

An excellent convention.

2010-09-26 Thread Mike Sanburn

I'm glad that you had a good time! I hope that it was an all-around boost for
the club. 'Lots of people there this time??? That Tillamook cheese tour sounds
delicious. 'Love that stuff. I can find their cheese down here but never the
butter. 'Sure hoping that we can get our Colorado convention announced in short
order. After that the only one of the 11 western states that hasn't had an IRCA
convention is Wyoming. 'Hope that you are in excellent health and will be at
the dials all season long. Tell people that I said hi73 Mike

Re: [IRCA] 'TP's for 10/25/10 Silver Point Interpretive Lookout, Oregon HW 56

2010-09-26 Thread D1028Gary
Hi Dennis,

Wow, that's quite a collection of Ultralight TP's with your E100 and Space
Magnet Loop! I'm happy that you had so much fun chasing TP's on an Oregon
cliff above the Pacific, and the cliff certainly seems to have given your
ULR DXing station a huge boost in TP reception (like the cliff in Lincoln
City gave me, for DU's)..

It's funny that you should mention the hum on 594 kHz, which I've also been
noticing since the beginning of the DX season. I thought that it was just
a local noise problem around Puyallup, but apparently not. I have usually
been tuning the Ultralights to 595 kHz like you, Dennis, just to escape the
noise. Last November the noise was not on 594 kHz, and the Korean and
Chinese co-channels of JOAK both made it through to Puyallup on several
occasions.

Thanks again for your excellent TP-DXing reports during the convention,
Dennis, and have a safe drive back to Salmon Creek.

73, Gary

[IRCA] CHSC 1220 silent period (and 860 KRTB)

2010-09-26 Thread Saul DX
That reminds me - I've heard CHSC ON St. Catharines has been shutting down
Sunday mornings. It has been noted signing on artound 9 or 9:30 am Eastern,
and my contact isn't sure when it's going off. Hard to tell here as
Cleveland is pretty dominant, but I might have very weak Spanish there...if
it isn't CHSC still on running Italian.

Might be worth checking, especially in case CHSC wins a reprieve from the
courts. It has appealed a CRTC denial to renew its licence.

Dennis:

918 is very likely to be Shandong (China). If you hang around the channel a
while, you will hear them ID in English as News Radio. At Grayland, the
Korean has always been much weaker than China.
1188: this should be FEBC from Seoul (Republic Of Korea), not DPR.

That's a nice list of ULR logs. I better get out to the coast soon.

General Electric GL-892-R 5 KW Forced Air Cooled RF Amplifier and Class B
Modulator (Weighs about 25 Pounds at least!!) Used in Commercial AM

The 892-R was used in a pre-WWII RCA 5DX 5kw AM transmitter. Also a pair of
891-R tubes. Probably used in other transmitters as well. I think they
were the first higher power air-cooled tubes. Previous versions of the same
ones were water cooled. The big glass part and the side grid connection is
a very cool sight.

Around 1974 WPRO-630 in Providence, RI updated their transmitters and got
rid of the RCA 5-DX they had since 1939. I removed it and had it stored for
a few years. Finally sold most of it and junked the rest. I do have a few
parts left for it in my basement. Mostly variable capacitors and some
coils.

Re: [IRCA] 'TP's for 10/25/10 Silver Point Interpretive Lookout, Oregon HW 56

2010-09-26 Thread vroomski

Chuck,

Thanks for the information on 918 Shandong, China. This roadside pullout was
nice, a pillar about chest level, so the radio, antenna and notebook fit nicely.
Mike at Grayland Motel Cottages will be happy to see you. There are now
4 huge electric windmills located just East of Grayland, surprised to see them.

best regards,

Dennis,

[IRCA] Puyallup, WA Ultralight TP's for 9-26

2010-09-26 Thread D1028Gary
Hello All,

The Asian regulars had no trouble showing up here this morning, but
second-tier TP audio was rare at best. On a second day of fairly average
conditions, there were a few minor TP surprises, but DXers returning from the
IRCA convention probably didn't miss much. The back yard was wet and the
weather was drizzly, but the TP's weren't exactly raining down.
729-JOCK and 693-JOAB both made fair appearances through local
splatter, and 738-Taiwan was at a good level playing its standard Chinese pop
music (after having apparently corrected its severe transmitter issues from
two days ago). 756-CNR1 had a decent signal in KXL splatter, and the Asian
lineup on 639, 648, 657, 666 and 675 took turns producing fair-good audio.
Other than these Asian regulars and a few other TP big guns, it was a
fairly average September morning, and most of the second-tier Asians never
really came out of the noise. Since TP conditions really weren't much better
here yesterday, Dennis' superb reception of multiple TP's at Silver Point (on
the Oregon coast) with his stock E100 Ultralight and SAT is really
amazing!Cliff-top DXing above an ocean beach may well be the wave of the
future.

The following were heard on a C.Crane SWP model (7.5 loopstick),
inductively coupled to a 9' sided PVC tuned passive loop (in the wet back
yard):

558 JOCR Kobe, Japan Fair Japanese music in and out of noise, 1316

It was in very strong here at 1910 local, presumably just before power

2010-09-26 Thread neilkaz
Oh my, this may explain the Spanish mx I had for a couple minutes around 1920
PDT tonite mixing with CKWX and others. A check of the FCC site shows a very
favorable pattern for skip towards the east and north east with 25 kw days. CX
were decent as I noted News 1130 in passing as early as 1910 PDT.

What time do Portland area stations switch to night pattern in Sept, is it 1915
or 1930?

Anyhow I know where I'll be looking tomorrow night. I had no idea that this
station was 25 kw days and was completely stumped by the SS on 1130 until I saw
email notice of KPWX. 73 KAZ Barrington IL Phased BOG System at 273 degrees.

Re: [IRCA] KPWX 1130 kHz La Mexicana Mount Angel, OR on air

KPWX is very audible under CKWX tonight off the SW EWE. Their 490w even
in a null seems to be doing well.

Re: [IRCA] IRCA Convention

2010-09-26 Thread Patrick Martin
Thanks to everyone that came making the convention a very good one.
Everything worked out nicely, including the station tours, the trip up
to the Astoria Column, and today a trip to Tillamook to the Tillamook
Cheese Factory, the Air Museum, and a run by KTIL-1590. A special thank
you goes to Phil for once again doing the IRCA auction.
A write up will follow in the next few weeks in the bulletin. I am tried
out a bit, but it sure was a lot of fun. Seeing everyone once again was
sure great.

73,

Patrick
