Re: [IRCA] 1710 Russian Station

2010-12-06 Thread Guy Atkins
At 0530 utc tonight I tried for the Russian language station on 1710. Since
a number of folks have mentioned hearing it easily, I figured so should I.

Nope! *Barely* a scratchy het is heard, and Perseus shows just a 4 or 5 dB
S/N at the most. That's on the best of four antennas available, too! Very
odd.

Gary DeBock-- if you're reading this can you try 1710 and let us know if you
hear the station in your Puyallup valley location? It's not even close to
being in audio here.

EMWG and WRTH have conflicting info, and the info in the WRTH conflicts with
itself!

But the chimes are Iran, thanks to Chuck.

Re: [IRCA] TAs Tonight

2010-12-06 Thread Jim Renfrew
Hi Chuck - you nailed it. Iran it is. The chimes fit the VIRI IS on
Interval Signals on Line, not quite the same tone, but definitely the same
notes. On 702 I only hear two tones, but it's a dead-on match with the same
tones on 711 where there are three tones. The third tone seems to have
dropped out on 702. I suspect that I will hear these chimes many times as I
work my way up the dial on this recording. The Iranian TOH at xx:30 is one
major reason why we record at the bottom of the hour. Maybe hearing what I
want to hear but maybe that ID is "Govorit Iran" or "Tehran". Thanks! Jim

I can't say I have ever heard "Govorit" IDs from Mayak. I'd be tempted to
think this was Iran ending their broadcast in Georgian, assuming that
"Govorit" is used in Georgian just like Russian.

Ahwaz-711 carries VOIRI at times per the WRTH just like 702 so maybe the
chimes are Iranian although I hear 3 note chimes rather than 2 note.

I'm hearing it too this early evening, 0310 utc, poor/weak, a man speaking,
possibly preaching. Plus there's a much weaker station underneath, can't
tell anything about it. (Using USB mode so I don't get splatter from the
strong 1700 regular station.)
If the FCC busted the Vancouver/Portland station I wonder why they don't go
after the (stronger) Puget Sound station.

Guy,

Even though my NE EWE is tiny (15X40X15), it still does well for the
Puget Sound stations. I just tried and the Russian on 1710 is going
strong (weak here tonight), with a woman in RR and RR music.

12-06-10  Nanaimo BC to Victoria BC  with moving scan at 8:45 AM PST. on 1440
with not much talk or advertising so enjoyed listening to oldies from
Wetaskiwin Alberta, not far south of Edmonton, with listenable signal steady for
at least an hour on W 1440, a 10KW station about 500 miles from Vancouver
Island.A couple of times KMED in Medford OR took over during W's fade-outs but
W managed to stay with me until about 9:45 AM.Most of the bigger Albertans were
gone sooner so I wonder how a station with only 1/5th the power could outlast
all the big
powerhouses.--At
3PM today the best signal out this way from the east was CBK 540 IN SK so if
it could run with a European sized transmitter it could easily cover ground
from Victoria to Toronto or points east of there as I remember hearing them
once on a frosty morning in To.Bill in BC

Re: [IRCA] 1710 Russian Station

2010-12-06 Thread Guy Atkins
Thanks Pat (and Chuck & Tom also) for your comments. Now I'm really puzzled
at the station's absence here! I didn't tune ECSS to check for a het, just
tuned past the frequency each time in AM mode. I was using my AOR receiver
rather than Perseus so I couldn't "see" any activity on a spectrum or
waterfall display.

I've been testing and comparing three 1-meter active loop antennas recently,
and the fact that they are all oriented with the nulls N-S may have
contributed to the absence of signal. That didn't occur to me earlier.

Back to 1710 kHz with Perseus and my usual 35 x 40 ft. broadband term. loop
with a forward lobe aimed north-northwest! I'll check it out tonight when I
get home.

We know it wasn't WLRC for sure, lol.

What I am now finding out is that the talk programming is only programmed
6am to 7pm 7 days a week.. and as we know, sunrise can be earlier and sunset
can be later then that some months of the year. What WLRB apparently does is
program their previous Nostalgia format for whenever there is no talk
programming and it may be done locally I've pretty much confirmed the
earlier, but have not confirmed if it's done locally or satelitted.

I'm about 99.99% sure that what I heard was WLRB-IL. They *apparently*
(still waiting to be confirmed) use satellite oldies in the studio,
during supposed quiet time to keep the automation running. And
*apparently (again)* the station did not sign off at sundown and oldies

Some were confident that it was South Dakota but the calls that I

[IRCA] ULR DX......SNOWED IN!!!......But 1 New Station snuck in thru the Sqwalls!!..................

2010-12-06 Thread Robert S.Ross VA3SW

Hi Guys:

WellIt's not officially Winter yet, but Southern Ontario
has been dumped on with our first big snowstorm of the year. Since
yesterday morning we have had 20-30 cms of snow depending on where you
are.with another 40-60 cms expected by tomorrow!!! With the Blowing
Winds...the Drifts are pretty high!! For those not familiar with
cms...when I went out to the shed to get the SnowBlower.the Snow
was OVER my Knees all the way to the shed!! If we indeed do get the
additional 40-60 cms.it will be up to my waste easily!!! h
boy...welcome to Canada in the Winter!! Luckily today is my day
off...and I didn't have to dig out for work!! I went out at 7 am and
Snowblowed for 2 Hours.when I was done...you couldn't tell where I'd
already cleaned!! ..so I just gave up and came back in the house!!
I'll have to go out again tonight and see what I can
accomplish..hopefully it will slow down by then!!

The Great Lakes are a lot warmer this Year.and the Cold Arctic Arm
passing over Lake Huron.is picking up lots of moisture...and
depositing it all in my Laneway right now!!

However all is not lost!!! Last night at Bed Time I managed to hear
another NEW STATION for the ULR LOG!!! It is a RELOG for the OVERALL LOG
however...

RADIO USED is...SONY SRF-T615 ULR BAREFOOT

Unless I hear something otherwise, they have to be who I heard. As I
told you offline about two weeks ago, the calls that I "thought" that I
heard were WRRB and WLRC. Switch out the first R in the first and the C
in the second and you have W-L-R-B. It would be new, or else I would
not pursue it. Thanks.

Forgot to add that the 1710 Russian station, presumably Puget Sound area,
was the strongest I've had it this year, perhaps ever, around 1520 utc.
There was another similar sounding station much weaker underneath, maybe the
Portland/Vancouver one, if it's still on.

Re: [IRCA] TP from Honolulu for 4,5 Dec 2010

Walt,

You did better than I did from Honolulu, when I was there in the 80s &
90s. Honolulu is not the best location for DX.
