The only time I ever heard KAVL was in Rancho Mirage. I QSL'd it there,
but never heard it in OR. 610 SF and Medford are hard to get around.

 >>1040-KURS-San Diego..no sign here (yet).<<

Logged KURS years ago, but never good enough for a report. I might have
a shot of it now, but the IBOC is horrible from 1050.

 >>1050-KMAP-Frazier Park (my local here went up from 1000 watts daytime
to 50 kw 24/7 in the last 20 years).<<

KMAP I do have heard and QSL'd, but that also was from the 80s I believe
when AU cx were excellent in the aftenoon in the Winter.

 >>1100-KAFY Bakersfield (again, I have a 50 kw local here).<<

Heard unid SS u/KFAX a time or two, but nothing else.

Another lucky break back in the late 80s/early 90s when I nabbed KSDT
one night. I was also looking for Oceanside which I did not hear. I got
a QSL from KSDT, but it took a couple f/ups.

>>1340-KWXY-Cathedral City (tried many, many, many times but no go).<<

No GYer heard from the Coahcella Valley here. At my place in Rancho
Mirage Cathedral City was my closest local at about 2 miles. My only
Coahcella Valley loggings up here are 920, 1010, and 1140. 1140 & 920
were both DX Tests and I have logged 1010 several times under different
call changes, but not for several years.

 >>1550-KWRN-Apple Valley (got nearly everyone but them thru my 10kw

Never heard this one either, nor Victorville 1590.

>>...Pardon me if some of the above have changed calls in the last 8
years. I need to bring my log up to date.<<

Don't worry about it, who can remember all of the call changes? I sure
can't. I find myself referring to a station with old calls often. About
the time you remember the new calls, they changed again. hi.

Very interesting Pat. I was fortunate to hear Vista once, as KMLO, from

2011-05-31 Thread Stephen Airy
Grr... if I had known someone was wondering about Lake Isabella's 1140, I would
have tried for them.  I was on a camping trip with some friends this past
weekend at the Tulare County Fairgrounds, and we drove through Bakersfield in
the mid afternoon on the way home.  That's within their 0.5 mV/m contour
according to Radio-Locator, so I could have checked for them, maybe.  Although,
in the RV we were in, the weaker signals didn't penetrate inside so well.
Maybe I might have been able to (barely) hear them in Tulare (as it's near the
edge of their estimated 0.15 mV/m contour) on the PL-606, but I don't remember
hearing anything on 1140 there.  (Chances are the splatter from 1130 in Dinuba
killed any possible signal, I guess.)
Also, according to the FCC, 1140 KQAB Lake Isabella is daytime only.

[IRCA] KXOR 660

2011-05-31 Thread Patrick Martin
KXOR is back off again. Apparently like some others, just signed on for
a few days to keep their license going. I remember asking Bustos Media
a few years ago about when Churchill shut down their stations
(1450-Eugene, 660-Junction City, and 1040-Tigard-Portland), I asked if
Bustos Media was interested in buying the three and the guy said that
there are too many SS stations. Then they added one more, 1130 Mt.
Angel. I would think someone would be interested in at least 660 as they
do have 10KW days. Their 75 watts at night probably covers the area well
enough as I can get it here.

[IRCA] Space Shuttle Landing vs Daytime MWDX

2011-05-31 Thread Glenn Hauser
It looks like we are out of luck again for a possible repeat of the
extraordinary daytime MW DX opening we caught a couple years ago when the Space
Shuttle was landing across the USA.

http://www.nasa.gov/tvschedule/pdf/tvsked_revm.pdf

If STS 134 lands on schedule at 0635 UT June 1, it will come in over
Mexico/Central America in the middle of the night. If it is one orbit later, it
will be over Mexico from a more westerly direxion, per:

http://www.nasa.gov/mission_pages/shuttle/shuttlemissions/sts134/news/landing.html

If there should be a further delay to the next orbit, it might come in over the
southern USA, but still at night. Only delays beyond that (or a change of
landing site) could put it into a daytime situation. But let`s be alert for any
such changes (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

[IRCA] CKNX-920 Wingham ON applies for nested FM relay

2011-05-31 Thread Deane McIntyre

CKNX-920 Wingham ON has applied for a FM relay on 104.3 MHz, 3 kW, 69 meters.
The AM transmitter would remain in operation as at present.

1. Wingham, Ontario
Application 2010-1622-0
Application by Blackburn Radio Inc. to amend the broadcasting licence of the
English-
language AM radio programming undertaking CKNX Wingham.
The licensee proposes to add an FM transmitter at Wingham to broadcast the
programming of CKNX.
The new transmitter would operate on frequency 104.3 MHz (channel 282A) with an
effective
radiated power of 3,000 watts (non-directional antenna with an effective height
of antenna
above average terrain of 69 metres).
The licensee indicates that the addition of an FM transmitter would improve
service to
listeners of CKNX, and provide fill-in coverage at night and in areas that are
most
affected by interference in the CKNX current licensed area.

From the application itself, of interest in light of recent discussion as to if
the
station powers down at night:

Coverage limitations

We believe strongly in the importance of our AM radio station. Not a single day
passes
without our thoughts on how we can offer even more service to residents. As a
station
that reduces power significantly in the evening, AM920 has always had trouble
reaching
its central audience after dark and before the sun rises. Attached is a
contour map
that shows our daytime interference free contours and the night-time contours.
As can be seen there is a significant reduction in our service area. We have
also
attached a map that shows our BBM Central area, provided to us by BBM. It is
clear
that there are significant parts of the broadcast day where our signal does not
reach many in our service area. With less power at pre-dawn (at late as 8am in
winter) and at dusk (as early as 4:30pm in winter,)before 8am and after 4pm
being
key drive times we can’t reach many of listeners with emergency broadcast
information,
road closures, bus cancelations, severe weather etc.. We are simply not
reaching those
in the rural areas and outlaying communities that rely on AM920.

Re: [IRCA] DX Tips for WDXR

2011-05-31 Thread Mike Sanburn

I don't remember if I ever verified KTKR but it seemed like kind of an exotic
catch DESPITE its relative closeness to me. Back in those days I had always
hoped to log KAAP 1400 Santa Paula CA (I did later manage to hear them under
subsequent clall signs) One I could never catch here was KVLI 1140 Lake
Isabella CA. ms

I was lucky to get a nice letter from KTKR with the old letterhead logo
that has been used on the NRC log. This was back in the 80s.

Re: [IRCA] New MW QSL (KWDP)

2011-05-31 Thread Patrick Martin
It seems like there has been a change in QSL policy now where few
stations will reply via letter or even card (which is quite rare these
days) for U.S. and Canadian stations, so e mail looks like the future,
like it or not. A least where a f/up doesn't work.
